D-Day 75: A Tribute to Heroes | LIVE Event - BBC

Subscribe and 🔔 to the BBC 👉 bit.ly/BBCKZreadSub
Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home 75 years ago the Allied Forces were making their final preparations for the invasion of Normandy. Known as D-Day, the mission would prove a decisive turning point in the Second World War. Live from Southsea Common in Portsmouth, Huw Edwards introduces full uninterrupted coverage of the National Commemorative Event taking place to mark the 75th anniversary.
Over 300 of the last surviving D-Day veterans will join the Queen and the President of the United States, together with other world leaders from the Allied Nations in Portsmouth. The commemorations will tell the remarkable story of the build up to the D-Day Landings through veteran testimony, theatrical performances and musical numbers, culminating with a spectacular flypast featuring aircraft old and new, including the Red Arrows.
Huw Edwards are joined by special guests in the studio whilst reporters Michelle Ackerley and JJ Chalmers are on the ground meeting veterans and finding out why it's still so important to mark this anniversary.

So true! We had 4 Uncles who Served. NON of them would talk about it. One, we didnt even know he landed in Normandy, until he was late for my brothers wedding, and said he had come from Normandy reunion/gathering in France! We were in shock! One of my other Uncles, finally talked about it, only it was in a letter he had to write to the Government. He was a POW in the Great Escape camp, Stalag Luft 3, and on this list to escape! Our mom shared that with us, but he would not openly talk about it.Only little tiny bits, here and there. He went through h-ll. He was SO young, they all were....:(

I consider myself as being extremely lucky to have heard the story of a French and German veteran, separately. The points of view on the horror and the tragedy of the event, although in two opposite camps, is not too different. Both did not chose to be where they were.

Im Blessed & Honored to be married to a Vietnam Vet. There experience was different for sure when they came home. :( My husband doesn't speak of the things he went through. Only a little. It was pretty horrific, and it truly is a Miracle of God that he did come home. War scar's the very Soul...thank you for sharing :)

@Ron P Um, if I didnt know better, you sound like your defending the Nazi's. You make these claims, BUT leave out the FACTS. FACT- Nordhausen- 450 killed 1st day, 1000 the next. NOT "thousands". Further, you left out the FACT that the SS moved them into barracks that were NOT marked with a RED CROSS on the roof, and the barracks were located right next to factories & rail-yards. Targets for the RAF. The SS COWARDS took cover, and wouldnt let the prisoners take cover. As for the ships that were sunk, you conveniently LEFT OUT the FACTS with that too. Like the FACT that they were anchored in a bay, which at the time, were common targets. Or that they didnt know there were prisoners onboard. OR that the ones that survived and swam to shore, were quickly mowed down with machine guns by the Germans. OR, this is a BIG FACT, that orders directly from Berlin were to either sculled the ships with the prisoners STILL ALIVE onboard, or have them bombed or torpedoed by German forces. The ORDERS WERE TO MURDER THEM ALL! Prisoners trapped on the ships for DAYS without water, was witnessed by the Swedish Red Cross with no complaints! Ya kinda INTENTIONALLY LEFT OUT A MULTITUDE OF FACTS now didnt cha.....

My dear Dad, now 94 and bed ridden was there, a soldier in the 6th airborne. He landed at Sword beach by sea and he was probably lucky as the first two divisions landed in gliders and had some terrible fatalities. His battalion held the Pegasus bridge and then went on through France and Germany to victory. After Europe was liberated they thought they were going to Japan but the US forced their surrender through bombing. His lot ended up in Palestine for a year and a half dealing with the mess there. He was glad to get back home to Old Blighty.

Military cadets, and equivalent, are the most loyal and have the most energy for this kind of thing. To the point that cadets were many of the last groups loyal, standing, and remaining at their posts during the final Russian revolution. They ran out of ammo, and stood up on the large firewood piles to be finished off by the leftist rebels attacking the government buildings. Then in the following days they were hunted down and any cadets found anywhere were brutally executed.

This is history and today, we are at peace and are allies. We shouldn't let evil forces run our countries, far-right, far-left politics, extreme views, etc. It's the responsibility of us and future generations go to war. So many good people around the world don't want war, but it's the few people in power, and few with evil intentions, that influence others to divide us. Hoping for long lasting peace to all people in the world.

Merkel was invited because many innocent German lives were lost that day, the German soldiers only did what they had to, most didn’t agree with what they had to fight for. They’re just as much victims as the Allied troops who didn’t return home.

Compared to the American Ensign and the Canadian Ensign, the Flag of the United States shows more character and History of a nation who had Patriot bodies scattered across the field so that flag can remain flying Today. Even with the flag rusty it still looks badass. Edit: The Canadian Ensign just shows that the United Kingdom is more powerful than Canada as Canada was the one being ruled and Britain was not the one to be ruled.

  • @luke2029

    @luke2029

Bobojane Spanere oh piss off, the British people alone won the Battle of Britain survived the Blitz, continuous V1 and V2 bombing near the end of the war. Not only were British forces instrumental at D Day and in the battle of France afterwards, for reference look up the Great Swan where British armies pushed all the way to Brussels whilst Patton went into Britanny. Not only there but also in Sicily, Italy and crossing the Rhine into Germany. It wasn’t only American supplies that sustained the Soviet war effort but also British weaponry such as the Matilda tank and other supplies and might I mention that it was British sailors and Royal Navy which guarded these vital supplies into the artic to Murmansk. So stop trying to downplay the British war effort, the British people suffered gravely in the war (not to the extent of the Soviets) and sacrificed much to bring an end to the war - if Britain had capitulated in 1940 then Russia surely would have fallen as over a million Germans manned the Atlantic wall to stop an allied invasion

One of the first things I saw when I got to my hometown was a sign a guy had put on his lawn. The sign said: "Soldiers & Dogs Keep Off the Grass." I couldn't even get a date with girls I had grown up with and had gone to school with. Nobody wanted to go out with a dirty, filthy soldier returning from war. Those memories really hurt & stuck with us Vietnam war era Veterans... even today.

I only attended the war events to comfort the veterans and their relatives without gloves during covid and I was just 18 doing that. I don’t know how I didn’t catch it but I’m so loved by the war generation just for doing that. I’m nearly 21 now and still going out in public comforting war survivors and they knew I was Woody.EXE’s Queen and the survivors also loved Woody.EXE when they met him for the first time last year

My father was born in 1916 and joined the Army when he was 16 yrs old. He served in WW2 and the Korean conflict. He retired when he was 62 yrs old. My father never talked about what he experienced. Not only did he lose 50% of his hearing, a result from loading the shells into the” big guns”. ,I think he had PTSD. It was called shell shock back then. He just never joined a conversation unless he was speaking to another veteran. I had completed the 4th grade when he came home from Korea. I never bonded with my father. I was like 5/years old the last time we saw each. We were strangers living under one roof. I am now 76 yrs old and can finally say “thank you dad for your sacrifices and for keeping me and the rest of the country safe”. My two sons joined the military. One was enlisted Army, four years and the other son is a retired Marine Major with 20 years. I think my farther would be proud.

May we never forget the great sacrifice the Allied Forces made in order to free Europe and the world. It took all of these nations to achieve this. I am American. My beloved grandfather was a part of this. I treasure sitting at his knee, listening to him talk of this time. I read every letter he wrote home to my grandmother (she saved each one) and listened to the music of that time along with them. Much gratitude is always in my heart toward every person who were a part of this.

I agree. Have you seen pictures of European cities before they were liberated by the US army in WWII? It was totally awful. There was no diversity and multiculturalism. Everybody was white. There were no people of color that add vibrancy of today. There was no LGBTQ rights and free pornographic art. Nazis did everything to stop advancement in that field. Have you heard what happened to Magnus Hirschfeld and his institute under Hiler's rule? Thank you, brave American soldiers!

Honestly, if the day comes where we say thank you, it will be a truly sad day, for the only we could repay fully what they did would be to do the same thing, to sacrifice our lives for future generations. The best way we can thank them is to do the best we can to maintain peace.

But the very BEST way we can honour their memory is to think about how to stop wars happening in the future, to make sure that such needless sacrifice never has to happen again.

And to think that Richard Dimbleby from what I'm given to understand, went in with the boys on D-day. ( please correct me if I'm wrong). I remember him presiding over a similar event that was 20 years after the event. I saw it on BBC, TV. In black & white. Strange how today's UK population is ignorant of what our parents & grandparents went through so we could have the right of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, the freedom to pray to whichever God suits your fancy AND...the irradication of fear that the soldiers in the lorry will not bash down your door in the middle of the night and drag you away to a 'Re-education' center. Sounds familiar doesn't it.

HM CPS .HM Coroners etc. Theres was no reply. When we went round there the "journalist" was not maing notes. When challenged she ran behind a door locking it. The we found out she was the daughter of a "friend" of ours a "councillor".in the crrpt tory Council who said this- "the chief exec is far too busy to see anyone even re life death".He was handing out prizes to a "friend" of ours for "cleaning a school".

I think the invisible front, then and now, must be the loneliest place on Earth. It's rare to see the intelligence communities and the hidden hero acknowledged openly and very moving as many perished and must remain unknown to the general public even after their deaths. Fortunately those doing the worst least appreciated work as undercover officers, traitors, villains who were not don't need a big statue or medals. They're martyrs for a better world of protected Beauty and free expression. 🙏🌈🤗
