    I accidentally destroyed an enemy fleet once in the Warhammer 40K TTRPG by failing a piloting roll when trying to sneak past the fleet. My final destination was the inside of the star in the solar system the fleet was gathering to glass the planet the rest of the party was on. My GM decided to give me a 1 in 100 chance to die like a hero and not die like the moron I was. I chose 42 and rolled a d%, I got a 42. Warped into the suns core, destabilizing the balance between the gravity of the star and the outward force caused by the fission occurring in the core. The star went supernova. Good times, good times.

    It even goes beyond D&D. A worse example is the game Bloons Tower Defense 5 - in the mobile Version there's, of course, a daily login bonus. Those often are towers that can be regularly used in game. However, there's no option to not use them, which lead some of my more autistic friends to abandoning the game because they didn't want to waste them. It's like having one's inventory full of assorted items commonly referred to as "random shit" and being unable to loot even more :/

    It's even better when you're taking a short rest before the final boss, so there's not even the excuse of it using up a turn. Or better yet, not spending hit dice because you might need them later that day. As if some new threat is going to appear out of nowhere and attack them, but is going to give them time for a short rest.

    It is generally considered good practice in battle to maintain a reserve to be deployed at the critical moment, and strategic reserves for later in the campaign. Judging whether a resource is needed now against the risks that can arise if still depleted at a later point is a skill that takes a long time to hone. The mark of a great strategist is knowing just how and when to deploy their forces, and it has made the difference not only in role playing games and board games like chess, but also on the field of battle and in a full scale war. Which is why the best move under these circumstances, is to simply sacrifice the fool as a distraction :)

    None of this is the wizard's fault. That none of the other fighters decided to bring a shortbow astounds me, that they hedged their bets on a spell that might fail irritates me and the fact that the wizard secured a potential solution to the problem which they ignored angers me. He could have transcribed that spell into his spellbook later! But, NO, one person is at fault for everything.

    Yeah, wanna talk about useless, how about that obviously low charisma paladin when paladins are charisma based! Or how about the rogue who appears to be using a longsword which is a strength based weapon when rogues are clearly dexterity based! Maybe if you hadn't dumped your dex you could be steathing around for that sweet sneak attack damage, or if you do have a decent dex, why don't you have at least ONE dagger that you can THROW. This was not at all the wizard's fault, the other players obviously fumbled the encounter to the point where the episode began, and then put unreasonable expectations on the wizard to get them out of the problem the caused. (Also if you're playing with moral, the orcs probably would have run in the situation of needing a rest, not all creatures fight to the death after all.)

    While these are all good points, I can't ignore the Wizard's poor choice in Cantrips. You _never_ go on adventures as a dedicated caster without some attack option to fall back on. No Fire Bolt? No Ray of Frost? No Acid Splash? Not even a Poison Mist or Shocking Grasp? Even in a social-focused game, you never know when things will come to blows.

  • @ardinhelme687

    @ardinhelme687

    6 жыл бұрын

    While I understand where you're coming from here, there are a couple reasons why someone would ignore that, first of all being if it's their first time playing. If they've never played before, you can't really blame them for making sub-optimal characters, they just don't know that it's sub-optimal. The other reason is the exact opposite: they've played a lot of D&D and they are purposefully making a sub-optimal character for the sake of roleplay. This seems to be the case here, as he said he was going for a bar-magician style and that he thought that this game would be more roleplay heavy. Is it a terrible strategic decision? Yes. But that's kind of the whole point. Players have a bad habit of optimizing only for combat, however, that is only one of the three pillars of the game, and deciding to ignore that and go in a completely different direction can be a very strong roleplaying decision. That all being said, he probably should have discussed that with the other players before-hand so they didn't peg all their hopes and dreams on him getting them out of tight spots.

    Why burn spell slots and consumable scrolls, when you've got dem sweet minor illusions? Step 1: Shout to orcs that you have been gravely injured by a stray arrow and you are carrying all your expensive loot Step 2: Cast an illusion of your party fallen between the trees Step 3: Wait for orcs to come over... then backstab, normal stab and scorching ray. Step 4: Profit Step 5: Short rest

    Vance magic system, it was the inspiration for D&D. It's the reason spell "preparation" or "memorization" is a thing. In that universe spells are a like a file that you store in your head, but after you use it its deleted, like it has its own mind. Then you have to take the time to relearn or find it again. The guys behind D&D used it because it made sure Wizards weren't always unstoppable and it also gave D&D magic an alien sense to it, which they liked because magic by nature isn't familiar. TL;DR: Old Sci-fi fantasy is the reason magic be like it is.

    @@KasumiRINA That still isn't the wizard's fault. A lv. 1 wizard only has two spellslots, so naturally, he'll blow through them quickly. However, a rogue gets 20 free arrows if she chooses the ranged option (which she SHOULD), and two daggers she can throw, while the paladin gets 10 javelins. If they managed to blow through so much ammunition, they have no reason to blame the mage. Not to mention that 2 Magic Missile deal a grand max of 30 damage, and a minimum of 12 damage. He should at least have been able to seriously wound one orc, possibly kill two. Unless the battle was heavily out of balance, that means the rogue and paladin hasn't done jack shit for the entire battle.

    Ah, but you are forgetting one key feature. All good rogue's have a short bow with them, so as to exploit sneak attacks without having to get into direct combat and monetise on their sneak attack ability to the fullest. But notice how Allison does not have a short bow in this video. Instead, she blames the wizard for not being able to be better than a wizard should be. For that reason, I consider Allison to be _secretly_ edgy in this video, which clearly is the edgiest way of being edgy.
