Dungeons & Dragons Expands Beyond the Gothic Horror in Curse of Strahdwith Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft D&D Brings Multiple Horror Genres to (Un)Life Including Slasher Horror, Macabre Fairy Tale, and Zombie Apocalypse.
One of the most popular adventures published by D&D in the last few yearswas Curse of Strahd which begins when characters are pulled by creeping mists in to a land called Barovia. But Strahd’s domain is just one of the many Domains of Dread that make up the horror-themed setting of Ravenloft. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenlof trefreshes the setting by giving Dungeon Masters descriptions of more than 30 Domains of Dread beyond Barovia as well as the tools to create their own horrific stories, including details on each domain’s Darklord, a ready-to-play adventure, new monsters, lineages and sub-classes. Be afraid for Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft to pull D&D fans into the Mists on May 18. “I’m a huge fan of all things horror, so it was an absolute thrill to frame this book around bringing frightening elements like mummy lords, cosmic terrors, and urban legends to more D&D tables,” said Wes Schneider, senior game designer and lead designer of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. “Working with exciting new voices in horror and visual artists like D&D concept artist Shawn Wood was essential to make sure we’re updating the aesthetic for today’s fans while staying true to the roots of Ravenloft.”The correspondence of Rudolph Van Richten and other heroes of Ravenloft, like Ezmerelda d’Avenir and the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins, introduce a new generation of monster hunters to the Lands of the Mists. Some of the Domains of Dread might feel eerily familiar to fans such as Lamordia, which explores the horror of experimentation on creating undead beings from deceased body parts by Dr. Viktra Mordenheim. Other horrors include the surreal, fairytale masquerades of Dementlieu; treachery in the war-torn rain forests of Kalakeri; and the endless zombie hordes of Falkovnia. Van Richten’s Guide includes rules and advice for DMs to create custom domains and Darklordsby portraying established horror tropes or whatever special new blend of terror they can imagine. Players can create more terrifying characters with Dark Gifts that provide roleplaying ties tothe Domains of Dread by bestowing benefits that may have a deadly cost. With Van Richten’s Guide, players can also roll upa dhampir who’s been created by a vampire, a hexblood descended from a hag, or a reborn who’s been brought back from the dead.Two new subclasses further flesh out the options with the College of Spirits for bards and the Undead pact for warlocks, as well as new backgrounds to explore and trinkets to collect. Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft features a cover by Anna Podedworna available everywhere and an alternate cover by Scott M. Fischer only available through game stores.The mists beckon on May 18, 2021!

    Your analysis is correct based on the information given in this video. But for anyone watching this video post release I'd like to mention that Dhampir PC's are only considered undead in the UA version. In Van Richten's they're just humanoids. So no need to worry about getting turned any longer.

    Well, there *is* a potential loophole that protects Dhampir and other undead PCs from Destroy Undead, which my fellow DMs will probably scream at me for pointing out: Destroy Undead affects undead creatures that are either at or below a certain challenge rating listed for a given cleric level. Player Characters, however, do *not* have a challenge rating associated with them at all, thereby meaning that feature does not affect them. So, while they still have to be wary of being turned by a Channel Divinity, they're safe from the worst of it's effects!

    I feel like this lineage should have a system of sub races where you can get more powers, but they come with weaknesses too. For example, you can get the ability to become a bat, but can no longer cross running water. Your bite becomes more powerful, but you now take damage in the day. You can become invisible, but have to roll wisdom saves vs fear when you see crosses, etc

    It's just lovely watching you discuss the various possibilities that could come up in-game.^^ On topic: I have just so many character ideas for dhampirs, but will probably never get to use them as I am the forever-GM when it comes to gothic-inspired settings. For example, a dhampir shadow-sorecerer who needs to occasionally take a nip out of other people's shadow to keep their powers from being completely lost. Or a dhampir gentleman thief who feeds on the nightmares of those he burgles. For the dhampir I always have this scene from Interview with a vampire in my head where Louis meets Santiago in Paris and the latter dances over the ceiling of the underpass....

    I wouldn’t remove the drawbacks of “undead” to be honest. Vampirism is still a curse after all and there should be some drawbacks with the benefits. Though I’d say after like level 10 that things like “destroy undead” will take you down to death saves rather then straight death unless it’s cast by something higher level.

Tabaxi aren't known for their claws. Vampires are KNOWN for their bite. It needs to be significantly more effective. I think they might make changes to it, perhaps heal for half the damage dealt, but if they take that away completely its going to be pretty damaging to the theme.

    It says "as an action", so RAW you cannot make a bite attack while incapacitated. Aside from that, feeding on blood in general (without that attack) doesn't really give any benefit such as healing, so you'd still be down. But I mean, if you wanna flavor a healing kit as trying to shove blood down the throat of the downed Dhampir, then I see no reason against that

    A clarification: Divine Smite does work with the bite because it is a melee attack with a weapon; however, the healing does not apply to the damage dealt by the smite, because the smite damage is not part of the weapon (bite) damage. The rage bonus and Hunter's Mark would work, though. As long as it increases the base weapon damage.

    You could add Hunter's mark but not rage damage. The vampire bite uses CON for attack and damage, rage requires the weapon to be STR based. I would overlook this fact as a DM personally, but none the less it is RAW. Also, if you want to get reeeaaally technical (the one phrase most DMs never want to hear XD) the specific quote is "damage dealt by the bite". Hunter's mark deals the same damage as the weapon it hits with, but in all technicallity it is its own damage source. So no matter what you'd only heal 1d4+CON. UNLESS you are a monk, in which case it can go up to 1d10+CON. But shhhhh, no one needs to know that XD

  • @jthompson7024
    @jthompson70243 жыл бұрын

    I would rule the healing from the bite in a similar way to how I rule enhanced critical hits. The way I run enhanced crits maximizes the initial WEAPON damage only and then you roll all other effects like a normal crit. For example a 1st level divine smite with a greatsword critical would be 12+2d6+4d8+Strength. So for the Dhampir bite I'd say you get healing equal to the damage directly from the bite but not any hunter's marks or sneak attack (if that's possible) or anything else that's added to the damage

  • @The_Crimson_Witch

    @The_Crimson_Witch

    I agree with this in terms of how the bite should be handled. Also, sneak attack isn't possible RAW (even though it seems like it should be) because the bite it neither ranged nor has the finess property. The Destroy Undead option has limits on how strong the undead in question is. By the time a party cleric has access to Destroy Undead, the Dhampir would also likely be considered high enough level to not be affected by Destroy Undead. Doesn't Destroy Undead only impact certain low-CR creatures? How would a CR translate to level for a PC? If it's one-to-one, then you probably have bigger issues if you are fighting with a cleric who is double your level anyways

    Players don't have CR, and it is certianly not one to one (I use pc builds for npcs a lot, so have calculated CR for pcs.) For example most level 17s land at around cr 14 It's not 100% clear how it works in the rules, but my personal interpretarion is that because players don't have a hard baked CR they do not qualify for anything that requires it.

    Fortunately Destroy Undead only affects up to cr 4 undead at max power, which your dhampir friend will be FAR higher than at that point.

    I've got an idea for a dhampir cleric, so I'm curious of the effects of turn undead when I'm doing it. Also one thing I pointed out when I first saw the vampiric bite ability was that you could potentially use this on yourself and get the benefits. I'm curious to know if that will still be a thing

  • @The_Crimson_Witch

    The rules are iffy on this, but my personal take as a DM are as follows: Turn undead requires the creature to have a CR. Because players lack a CR, they would not meet this requirement and therefore be unaffected. Also, that is a valid point. However it would only be useful for the second benefitbof the bite. If you try and heal, you heal for how much damage you deal. So in other words you'd take the damage and immediatly heal back to where you started XD *EDIT*: I got confused between turn undead and destroy undead. In that case you would need to make the save or try and run away from yourself, which I would rule as reducing your speed to 0 causs you can't do that XD

    I loooove the Dhampir! I've made a reincarnated Dhampir that I'm really excited to play. They're a female-presenting human descended from a long-dead vampiric tyrant, a man who was absolutely evil... and for some reason, he was reincarnated as this female descendant. She balked at some of the memories that came back to her and became a Light Domain cleric of Lathander; that didn't go so well, and after they killed someone with their vampiric bite, that opened up access to old powers they used to have as a vampire. So it's a Light Domain cleric/The Undead warlock multiclass. Super fun build to make, and I think that this Gothic lineage opens up sooo much great RP opportunity!

    My question is as a Dhampir Monk would I get to replace the bites damage roll with my martial arts die, cause that could be some dumb stuff dealing/healing 1d10+con mod at LVL 17 Main question is because it's a simple melee weapon with which you have proficiency, is it a monk weapon? If yes, shenanigans ensue, if no, shenanigans still ensue because of the optional monk options from tasha's where you can count any melee weapon you're proficient with as a monk weapon.

    Destroy Undead can't effect a PC Dhampir. It targets specifically undead with a CR. PC's don't have CRs. Closest you get to that is some spells that equals level to CR. But if you use that then the PC is waaay higher CR than the Destroy Undead can effect. Hell even if you use the Xanathar's CR to Level quick matchup, a 5th level character is equal to 1 CR 2 monster, effectively making them CR 2 when the Destroy Undead can only effect CR 1/2. This remains consistant at higher levels.
