In a clip from the Questlove Supreme interview with Pino Palladino (link), Pino and Ahmir reflect on their game-changing work with D'Angelo. The world-class bassist and the drummer/producer compare notes on working on Voodoo and The Black Messiah. Pino reveals that Betray My Heart, a song that appeared on The Black Messiah, was recorded in 1997-years before Voodoo. That is a testament to the timelessness of D'Angelo's music and incredible studio chemistry.

D’Angelo was a perfectionist in every way. He knew the sound & tone he wanted and no one could rush his product. It had to be frustrating in instances him going thru “his process”. But the results speak for themselves. Can we get D on the pod tho?!? Would love to hear him and Amir describe their creative process together in depth.

Bach was a perfectionist and didn't take as long as D'Angelo. Mozart was a perfectionist and had 600 works before dying at the age of 35. Being a perfectionist is an excuse. Being a perfectionist stops no one from releasing music in a timely fashion. Paralysis by analysis is more often the cause.

@@kultan2000 There's levels to everything, bro. Perfectionism is no acception. Bach and Mozart were probably more perfectionist as in wanting everything to be played and orchestrated specific to their desires. D'Angelo's in the same boat as Dre. Doctor or 3000, take your pic lol. With 3000, I think he wants whatever he puts out to have real meaning to the culture or what's the point. With Dr. Dre it's more of not wanting something with his name on it to be just as banging and epic as his two monumental classic albums and wanting it to sound precise to the way he hears the ideas inside his head. D'Angelo's somewhere right in the middle of both those two.....

It’s hard to believe D only has three albums.

He still has more great songs than musicians with ten or fifteen albums. What he lacks in quantity he makes up for in quality.

Voodoo is the best imo. One the best albums of the 21st century. ❤

It's amazing to think that there are probably dozens of songs and covers D'Angelo could pull out from his archives and just put onto an album with very minor tweaks and they'd sound other worldly. That computer Questlove has that has unreleased tracks from D is priceless

He really is Prince's heir apparent. I think about that with Paisley Park every now and again, how there's tracks from those vaults they could just sell to some new artists to go and re-record..... and now THEY'VE got a classic record.
