NYXLs always. They're solid, last a long time, and break in nicely.

I have to agree. I've had them on a bass for a year and they still sound really good.

I've been playing half rounds on my Gibson EB0, I just LOVE the way it sounds and feels. At the beggining they're a little pain in the ass to break in, but once the'yre done, they're good to go and last ages!!

NYXLs are currently my favourite strings. They are the only roundwound I've tried that sound good from new; you don't have to wait a few days for the overbright edge to go, like on most roundwounds.

I ordered my 1982 Carvin LB-50 bass with GHS Boomer Half Rounds and loved those strings, so half rounds have been available for quite some time.

I really liked the sound of the tape wound and half round strings. I use flats on my basses now. Maybe I need to experiment a bit...

You should really try these tapes. They're mellower than flats and your fingers don't stick to them. I'm speaking of these particular tapes, and not tapes in general. The nylon is scuffed up so that they don't feel like plastic. They almost feel like cloth. You can slide all day and have no finger issues.

I use the D’Addario half rounds on one of my MM, and tape wounds on the other MM. Sound great. I haven’t tried the NYXL yet.

Been meaning to give the half-rounds a go on my fretless for quite some time. NYXL has been my roundwound set of choice on bass and guitar for the best part of a decade.

I am currently playing those half rounds and I love them. They give that flat wound low end with a little crunchy mid range. Very nice sounding. They seem like they would be the perfect studio strings

Did you notice that first strings sounds much brighter while lower strings sounds dull, like 2 year old ones?

These tape wounds are my favorite strings. They are mellower than the other brands that I've tried. And, if you read the back of the package, they advertise that they're mellower than their own flat wounds. I'm a sucker for that more upright sound. They don't feel like plastic either. I believe they go through some kind of scuffing process to make them a drier, smooth feel so that your fingers don't stick to them, due to more surface tension. They are also pretty forgiving if you have bad technique, like I do, when missing proper fretting positions. As, they give less of a buzz sound. I highly recommend that you try a set.

I used custom light Pro Steels for a good decade, but these days I like the nickel wounds more because they last longer and there isn't such a huge tone differential between new and old strings

I think you guys have been doing a great job with string demos. It must be pretty tough to do because there aren't many good ones out there. Thanks for avoiding playing the same riff over and over again on different sets and just playing to the set's strengths.

Nice vid, thanks Gregor. I've been using half rounds on several of my basses. People often comment that they 'feel sticky'. The feeling comes from little micro shards that are a artifact of smoothing away half the out wraps. I've found that a wiping them with something lightly abrasive, like a scouring pad (don't use steel wool), or a brown paper bag will make them feel better quicker.

I don't know if the NYXLs are different but my last three sets of regular nickel XLs could not be intonated. Notes above the 12th fret were sharp and notes below were flat (!). People had told me about this before but I'd not experienced this myself until recently. I used to like the versatility and warmth of XLs, but I'm sticking to SITs from now on- yes they do stay/play in tune all over the fretboard

Being a poor (and cheap) bass player, I'm always on the lookout for long-lasting strings that are not expensive. I use the Elixir Nanoweb strings which sound punchy, bright and clear and do last a lot longer, but they're not cheap. These Nylon tapewounds seem pretty cool, not as bright as I'd like, but the sound should remain consistent for a decent amount of time.

I found the solution years ago to make strings last a long time. Wash hands before playing and wipe the strings and neck when done.

There’s definitely grounding issues when playing nylon strings (instruments may vary) but an easy adjustment of shielding your instrument can help with that a little 🤙🏾
