Cylinder Quad Topology Done Right

Topological consistency matters in 3D modeling. This video focuses on the specificities of quad topology for subdivided cylinders. Cutting a hole in a cylinder without messing up the mesh is a common challenge. We break it down in Blender, but the core techniques and principles apply across all major 3D modeling platforms.

Adobe After Effects 17.0 (AE 2020) is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of filmmaking and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation. It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor, and media transcoder.
CINEMA 4D R21 is a 3D modeling, animation, motion graphic and rendering application developed by MAXON Computer GmbH in Germany. It is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modeling applications.

M -> Collapse (or Mesh -> Merge -> Collapse) No need to use auto merge! (I have ruined a lot of meshes by accident when enabling that option)

Yeah, nothing like finding a bunch of collapsed vertices hours into a model because you left auto merge on :(

Many hacks in the video and very many mistakes. This is not how you properly add a hole to a cylinder, at least if you are trying to avoid shading artifacts. If you are looking at a top view and moving points around to get them to sort of kind of line up, you're already doing it wrong. I can point to a specific timestamp of something done wrong: 6:25. For a shape this basic you would never diagonally connect to a support loop at the top or bottom like you are doing. All that will do is distort the rounding of the edge whose rounding is supported by the loop. To see this, once you turn on smoothing, look how the point that has now become a 5-edge pole controls the top of the cylinder's rounding behavior differently from the other points that make up the control loop (having four edges that are all at right angles with respect to each other [i.e., forming a cross at each of the other points]).

Thanks for the feedback. I'm always looking for ways to improve topo!
