Cyclone Michaung Destroys Chennai | ISH News
A severe cyclonic storm named Michaung has emerged from the Bay of Bengal and is headed for the south eastern states of India. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted the arrival of cyclone Michaung and issued an official ‘heavy rain & strong winds’ warning for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh on 2nd December 2023.
Tamil Nadu’s capital city Chennai was hit by cyclone Michuang on 4th December 2023. It caused very heavy rainfall and disrupted the lives of Chennai citizens. A large portion of the city was submerged in rainwater and cars & bikes swept away as the rainwater flowed through the streets. 14 subways throughout the city were closed and many under construction buildings collapsed. A portion of Chennai’s Poes Garden road cracked & sinked in. A transformer and a small temple fell in the sink. The video for the same has gone viral on social media. Railways, on 3rd December canceled 54 trains as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the passengers. Chennai’s Meenambakkam International Airport was also shut on 4th December till midnight due to strong winds and heavy rainfall. 10 flights were canceled, 20 got delayed and many were diverted to avoid the storm. According to the reports, Chennai has received 400-500 mm in one day and at least 5 people have died in rain-related incidents in Chennai. The Chennai state government has declared a holiday for schools, colleges and government offices and advised people to remain indoors for one more day.
Cyclone Michaung is now expected to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh on 5th December 2023. It is estimated to pass close to Bapatla city and between Nellore and Machilipatnam cities during noon with the wind speed of 90-110 km/hr. Strong winds and heavy rainfall have already started lashing many parts and 1-1.5 meters tidal waves are expected to flood the low-lying areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh. The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an alert for eight districts. It has also appointed many senior bureaucrats as special officers for the cyclone affected districts, closed schools & colleges, and appealed to people to stay indoors. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has issued a directive to evacuate people from vulnerable areas in the city. Officials have evacuated 11,000 to 12,000 people to relief camps from 63 fishermen villages as a precautionary measure. More than 13 trains have been fully or partially canceled to and from Andhra Pradesh. Puducherry and Telangana are also on red alert because of cyclone Michaung.
The name of the cyclone ‘Michaung’ was proposed by Myanmar. It means resilience and fortitude and it looks like resilience and fortitude is what exactly our siblings in the south need to face this ‘severe’ category cyclone.
