    Awesome advice. Yep, I fell foul of the chase a high CTL last year, pushing high 90's felt like rubbish. Now I've got a coach and with it sitting at around 70-80 im flying. Big lesson. wish I had been able to watch this 9 months ago. Thanks, Francis

    Build your CTL preseason and trade it off with higher intensity intervals in the lead up to your main event. Your CTL will be around 60-70 at the race but your form will be up over 10-20 to have the kick you need in the race and be fresh. You can build up your fitness again midseason with more sweet spot work so you can double peak for a split season. Frank Overton (FasCat Coaching) explains it on his podcast. Been killing it this season after following a structured training plan,thanks for the information on 60 minute test too.👍

    Ive seen guys using cadence and hrm doing zones and never use a power meter with great results. Whilst ppwer is critical power can be misdleading. Think of a sports car race when you see a lower powered car win over another because of factors such as gearing choices, gear selection and vehicle weight. Power to weight ratio is extremely important in cycling but can be a grey area as one person of the same weight as another will have anatomic variance Vo2max to measure max heart rate i think gives you a more accurate ability to set zones rather than the 220-age formula.

    My CTL was low 80s during the summer (off uni) and i decided to start to racing track league this winter but due to uni and work commitments i can only do 60/90 minutes training sessions. My CTL has dropped to low 60s but i feel stronger during the races, however my endurance has suffered due to the specific training.

    One thing about CTL is that it get you highly over trained in very hot conditions because Training Peaks can't account for metabolic stress your body experiences dealing with heat. One would be better off using heart rate training stress scores where I live (Houston, TX) about 5 months out of the year.

    I get that HR is effected by other factors such as sleep or caffeine. But isn't it better this way? What I mean is, isn't HR more closely related to biological processes such as metabolic ones (and therefore being a good measure to understand where is your lactate threshold) rather than power, given that in different days one could implying much more effort too get too the same amount of power?

    I love Zwift as a training and bad weather tool. But I have a separate Strava account to record my miles on Zwift as I don’t believe Zwift miles count the same as real road miles ie effect of road surface, wind, sunlight, rain etc. I’ve had mates boasting about number of miles accumulated in so far 2019 mildly irritating, when 60% of those miles are Zwift miles. Am I alone on this?

  • @glennoc8585

    @glennoc8585

    Zwift 'should' by now be incorporating road friction variables by real world analysis of surfaces and weather statistics could be added off gis or geo data. I believe that swift have a default resistance loading that your smart trainer will always adjust too. Some fixed trainers have a zero liwding and others are set to a pre load to simulate a sealed smooth road by default. Swifts algorithm may detect whether or not a trainers is using a pre determined loading or not.

    Why worry about what everyone else is doing? Are you happy= yes, Are they happy=yes Zwift and outdoor riding can coexist, both are different, but compliment each other. There is already too many unwritten rules in cycling, just do what makes you happy, but above all, just ride!!

    I find his attitude about 20min tests a bit weird. Obviously a 60 minute one is going to potentially show truer numbers, but I don't think you can just skip the fact that it's also quite probably going to be low since you won't be able to motivate yourself to ride at your actual max for 60 minutes..

  • @y2kenb

    @y2kenb

    5 жыл бұрын

    How do you know you’re at your actual max for a 20min test? The point is ftp is defined as your best 60min effort so if you want to take the guess work out and have accurate training zones then you need to do it. Or, get your true lactate threshold tested in a lab as that makes for much more effective training

    @@y2kenb Hi Ken! Have you seen these tests before: www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/the-physiology-of-ftp-and-new-testing-protocols/ and what are your thoughts? Looks like a good way to progress onto a 60+ min ftp test for those that don't have much experience at pacing long sustained efforts.

    People do the 20 min tests because the number is more flattering at the end. As with everything in cycling theses days, it's all about nurturing the ego.
