Cycling to San Francisco from California's North Coast - Pacific Coast Bike Route - Ep7

I start this one taking off towards San Francisco after a perfect night of camping at Manchester State Park. Two days later I document the crossing over San Francisco Bay's Golden Gate Bridge and ride into the city. With the company of two couples from Sweden I spend a day cruising around checking out this and that.

i love how you just fly your drone wherever you want to get the shot. Far too many people allow themselves to be restricted by the arbiters of control. Hovering over the bridge deck was awesome..

After watching this i was looking back on season 2 USA tour. You've come a long way in your touring, to think you were riding back country roads to Barkcamp State Park to now riding over the Golden Gate Bridge. You've paid your dues and i feel this tour is a reward for you considering all the other states you rode thru in the past years that were less rewarding in comparison to this one. What a great series this has been.

Barkcamp was just outside the remarkable Pittsburgh and a few episodes earlier was beautiful Niagara. I do get your correlation of back roads in the middle of nowhere, that no one ever heard of, to the iconic city of SF. Diego has gotten around this great country from unknown areas to Hollywood locations. 👍 Also, Barkcamp would be considered a"fly over" or drive by area but the beauty of bicycle touring is you get to see these places that one wouldn't have been exposed to.

This tour is definitely filled with amazing places and I hear what you are saying. With that said, I gotta say I miss all the states I have visited. There is something special about ridding thru them and experiencing their uniqueness. The next tour I am about to start will have plenty of diversity like the second one. It start in Georgia and ends in San Francisco zig zagging thru the south. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

Buck, you are so right on with your comment. It is the entire package that makes touring so incredibly fun and fulfilling. Even van life can't provide that level of experience. It's the speed of bike travel that takes you to the heart and soul of all these places. It's the riding thru neighborhoods, towns, forests, parks and every other possible road that makes me keep wanting more.

So, Diego, I always see you humping your bicycle, up hill and down hill. I know you camp in camp grounds, stay at Warm Showers sometimes, stay in motels at times. I live in the States, too in the Midwest. I make short tours because I don’t have time for long tours. I’ve watched a lot of your videos- you’re inspirational. One thing, I’d like you to show us your bicycle and tell us what you like about it. I’d like to see your tent and your cooking kit. I’d like to know what you carry in your panniers, what touring equipment you like to carry, you know, tools you carry for repairs, etc. That would help me, learn from a pro like yourself.

Hi Daniel. I do need to do a video of what I carry. I haven't yet because I am so short on time and have been for these last four years. It's a struggle to keep up with the editing of the tours, work on the water like I do for six months and find the time to do my tours. One thing I won't do is sacrifice my time on the water or on my bike. I will try do what you ask. For now, I have listed all my camping gear and every single components I used to build my bike. They are in every description box of these episodes. The only thing missing would be the tools and repair items I carry. I will have to comprise this list to share there as well. It's really not much. I keep it all super tight. One thing I tell everyone is that once you are on the road you are constantly thinking about what you don't need to be carrying and you find this things that you must such as an extra shifter cable and a set of break pads. Thank you for asking though and I will work on a video like that once I get the time. For now I need to focus on this season so I can make time for my next tour, can't wait.

The quality of how you filmed this video is only surpassed by the beauty of what you filmed. Simply amazing. If only we can see the 10 people that secretly set up cameras around you for the ride-bys and especially the cam work on the bridge. My aunt lives in Lagunatis on Sir Francis Drake and I recognized some of those areas. Pretty cool. The beach coastal atmosphere there is really something. The "I made some friends" and then cut to the seagulls. Total dad joke. LOL. Going to SF would be a great place to end a tour but it is not over yet! It seriously is an insane route offering some much diversity from woods and rustic to beach coastal to the metropolises, rural towns, and more. I had my wife watch part of the video while I showed pictures of us there 18 years ago looking at the same things. How things change and other things are still the same. I watched it 3 times and I saw something new in SF each time. Really a beautiful touristy city.

LOL, dad jokes is where it's at. Those feathered friends are at times all you have to chat with. I believe they listen plenty. Very cool about your aunt living in Lagunitas and you recognizing the roads along Sir Francis Drake. This route is so diverse like you are saying. The next stretch to Los Angeles thru Big Sur is absolutely crazy beautiful. The tour sort of takes a bite of a turn with serious obstacles I had to deal with but I'll wait to finish the episode and let you watch for yourself. Challenge > Rewards. San Francisco is a blast to visit. I could have stayed a lot longer but the road was calling me as well. Working on the next one today and hoping to upload it sooner than the rest. One more week of work and I'll have some free time to edit and build the new ride. Thanks for watching and reaching out as always.

I toured north into SF in 1992. Just south of the city is Pigeon Point Lighthouse, a first World War army base. Is now a youth hostel. That's where I stayed the night before going through the city and across the Golden Gate. San Francisco city of my birth. I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge on my 40th birthday. @@FlyscoutRyder so I now live in Portland Oregon and I am retired. But my new ebike has become my main transportation. From grocery shopping, to commuting into my part time job, and recreational riding and touring. I purchased a small cargo trailer to pull behind the bike. I turned in $800 ebike into a $2,800 be by upgrading it over the last two years and I put over 3,000 miles on the Hub motor. Still get lots of exercise with it but the motor helps out on this longer steeper inclined especially at the age of 70 and being slightly overweight.

Diego! I reached out to you I think when you posted the last day of the northwest tour. I mentioned to you I too was on a tour on KATY trail same time you were on yours. You then said you too share the KATY experience. I thought that was very cool. Now you've tour'd I think one of the most gorgeous routes. This one too we have in common because my girlfriend at the time (now wife of thirty years) after Sonoma wine day spent the night in Bodega Bay!! Then I started to remember all of the your touring and mine and how similar. St Louis to San Diego to for me. Did the Grand Canyon tour on way amongst others, Day tour from Suttons Bay to Northport MI. Definitely feeling like you and I would become great friends due to life experiences. Those are awesome bonds that I treasure and makes me feel good that we have same. One more thing, while you were on you SF trip in Nov I was chasing waterfowl with the best dog a man could ask for. The reason why I post this is because I saw a couple of your fishing videos and I know you too are a sportsman who respects the outdoors as I!! JP

Hi John. I remember you reaching out with the KATY comment. Very cool that you have toured the Pacific Coast as well. I agree with you about the bond we all share after having toured these places. It's so hard to describe to people who haven't done a tour by bike what the entire process gives you/us. It's enriching in the most positive way and that makes us as close to friends as posible without actually having met in person. Maybe someday that will change. I have spent my entire life in the outdoors for work and every other minute I have had to spare so we share that as well. Bird hunting with your best pal by your side is a top notch way to do so. Enjoy every moment to the fullest and I promise you that I will do so myself. Take care and thank you for reaching out with such a kind message.

Probably not going to happen for me but still fun to watch the adventure. I was really surprised to see your drone footage over the Golden Gate Bridge since it's been illegal to fly a drone near the bridge since 2014. Be careful with that stuff. The fines for getting caught flying in National parks and restricted airspace can be pretty hefty these days.

Hi Jeff. I watched several episodes of your channel. I like that you have both bike touring and woodworking content mixed in. Your message to the viewer at the end of your Erie Canal Trail tour was on point. The lathe ones are fun to watch. I'll be going back to watch more. The Pacific Coast Bike Route is very hilly with legitimate grades too. If you do decide to do it someday I would recommend making sure your drive train is spread out enough to deal with all the climbing. My cassette is 11-34 and crankset is 46/30t. About the drone footage, you are right I just didn't know. I guess ignorance took over and hopefully it will not be an issue. I am extremely considerate to laws and will be paying more attention going forwards. I appreciate you pointing it out, thank you. And thank you for watching the episode and reaching out.

Oh, I’d like to see your cooking kit. Do you just eat in restaurants or do you eat those dehydrated meals or do you buy food at supermarkets and cook it at camping areas. How do you handle the nutrition needs of a bicycle touring dude like yourself. This is important information that you could share with your viewers. Do you have an alcohol stove or canister stove? There is a lot more to touring than just turning the crank and pertaining of the view.

  • @FlyscoutRyder

Great question. I do a mix of everything to get all the calories. For starters, I keep two meals on me to cook if I end up camping. I carry a Toak Titanium Pot that fits an isobutane canister and a small stove. You see me using it to make tea or food in some of my episodes. The food I carry is not much. I always buy a one pound bag of beef jerky and when it's gone I get another. I add jerky to water with two packs of ramen for instance. But also do Knorr pasta or rice packs. If there is a store around I might pick up an onion. On the west coast tour I was finding frozen local raviolis so I would boil them, drain half the water and add a can of crushed seasoned tomatoes. If I see a Subway I might stop and get a sub for dinner. If Im at a motel I will look for a supermarket and get fruit and whatever. I love breakfast so I look for local diners. If I stop at a restaurant I make sure I can see my bike thru a window. Lastly, I have at least two packs of cookies such as Nutter Butters and Im never without a bag of gummy bears.

Hi Stephen. I've tried the internal drivetrain idea and learned that it is not for me. I really like integrated shifting. With that said, I am definitely the minority. Most riders that use either Pinion or Rholoff really love them. Thanks for watching.

I stop all the time and record an average of 1 to 1.5 hours daily but not necessarily do too many more miles per day. The way to look at it is that if I didn’t stop so much I would be riding way more miles per day. All the stopping forces me to take in these places I tour way better than if I was focused on miles alone but it also forces me to have to ride at a faster pace to actually cover meaningful milage to get me somewhere where I can spend the night before dark. I don’t care for evening riding. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

Hello Chris. I like your @Optimisticchris name, legit. Thank you for reaching out. I use a DJI Magic Mini 3 Pro. I've used other DJI ones in the past and this one is surely the best. I don't remember how many times I launched it on the bridge, maybe three times. I use four cameras to gather the content and on this scene I used three. The drone, a GoPro 9 and a Canon G7X Mark iii. You are going to have a blast on this route. California and the NW is spectacular in every way.

  • @FlyscoutRyder

Hi Alex. You are going to have a ball. The green windbreaker I found three years ago in South Carolina. It's made by Specialized but not sure how you can find it. It's one of those garments that means a lot to me because of all the miles I've ridden with it but also find it to be too dark and not so safe to use. For that reason I tend to only use it when there is less traffic or a rail trail type of scenario. My go to color is orange as you can see and my favorite garment is the dark blue and orange Mammut vest. That one is a must for colder weather ridding to keep temp. Thank you for watching and please be safe out there.

I see you're using a fish eye lens on your camera.. try putting the camera in Linear mode and taking a photo of the horizon over the ocean.. you will see there is no curve.. That appears because of the wide angle lens and that is why they have factory settings on cameras to be in wide angle.. LOL

  • @FlyscoutRyder

    @FlyscoutRyder

    Жыл бұрын

It's not a fisheye lens but it does pick up curves in the distance. It's a GoPro. Hardest part of my content gathering is keeping the four cameras I use to do so as light as possible so I can ride up all the hills I like to climb. All these cameras have some deficiencies but I try to use them in the most efficient way possible to gather the diverse footage to make the story come thru. I'm always looking for better equipment but there are limitations. If I only had a film crew following me doing the content gathering.... not really, I like to go solo. Thanks for the feedback, its great.

The Oregon coast is so beautiful. The redwoods of Northern California and the coast to San Francisco also make for amazing ridding. I, as well as many other cyclists, found the yoga studio using the Warmshowers platform. It's an international free economy system that allows hosts and guests to find each other. It's for cyclists and hikers. Most hosts, like Michael of the yoga studio, have or still travel by bike and have used the platform to find hosts. Hosts offer a place to take a shower and lay a tent. Often times they offer an actual bed and share dinner as well. It's highly effective and impressive to see how many hosts are actually out there. Thank you for watching the episodes. Be safe out there.

  • @FlyscoutRyder

I would always be concerned when cycling on roads that have traffic but this route is likely the most cycled route in the United States. Drivers are used to seeing folks bicycle touring. There are sections that are busy and most others that are not. The shoulders are not huge but I believe adequate enough. The most difficult sections are the bridges you have to ride over especially in Oregon. Most touring cyclists I met asked for a ride and said they got it easily. I chose to ride them but not sure I would not ask for a ride next time. You will see signs that offer you to exit US1 to paralleling scenic stretches that are way tranquil. You can also get the Adventure Cycling Association Pacific Coast Bike Route maps and get the scoop for the entire way. Camping access is the best I have ever seen myself. There are all kinds of options for hike bike for low cost. Lastly, the views are amazing and with all the hills it makes for seriously fun times. Hope you get to go.

Hello Henry. I use Google Maps app on my phone. I tend to alternate between the driving and cycling mode to figure out the way but I also ask local folks about road conditions all the time. Lastly I zoom in a bunch on the satellite view to see about terrain (road/dirt) differences and shoulder sizes.
