Cycling the Canary Islands: El Hierro

The Canary Islands! These 7 little pieces of paradise is where Belén and I set out to cycle last fall, climbing all of them in a period of 7 weeks, commuting with the Naviera Armas ferry in between.
Let us take you on the journey of the seventh, and last island: El Hierro!

Beautiful video! The islands are really geared for cars. When we cycle there, we rent a car and a bike. About traveling off season, unfortunately, there is a reason to travel in season. Off season you have the place all for yourself... but also the rain all for yourself.

There is not such a thing as off season or rainy season. The North of all the Western canaries is rainy in general, cross to other side in 20 min and sun will be shining.

It's a beautiful video that you absolutely spoil with some of your comments. You wonder why nobody picks you up on the road when it is raining, you have to realize that this is not your country. It is not usual for us to do that, a country very fond of cycling, and I suppose you come from a rainy country. The tunnel ... you have no idea where you were :). You yourself praise in your video that the roads are absolutely empty. Can you tell me how many bicycles you crossed on El Hierro? If only for that reason you call the Cabildo, let me tell you that, I would highlight to say, that the Cabildo was very kind and correct to you when you complained. I don't think that's a reason to call. You both have to know this in order to understand it. The first traffic light on the island was installed in 2005, it is located right at the entrance of a one-lane tunnel, the tunnel that was reached after climbing the mountain. Are you really sure that at the beginning of this path there was no sign indicating it? Either way, I assume they have lights on their bikes. So, you can get an idea of how inhospitable the place is. To finish, you can see ... some lovely people stop to pick you up, and not in the rain, it's a big mystery :). When you're riding a bike and it's raining on the road, you can't expect people to stop for you, at least normally, not in Spain. Spain is a safe country, where maybe if it rains people won't pick you up. But we have much more important things than you mentioned. I am sure that in my country if something happens to you, people will help you unconditionally. If you need a hospital in my country and you don't have public or private insurance, not even money, they won't kick you out, they'll treat you even if you can't pay, and do you know why this happens? I tell you, because all Spaniards pay monthly taxes to the government for our medical service, which also includes care for anyone, regardless of their nationality. Is it like that in your country? This is really important if you travel and not the problems that you expose, or question people. I love that you liked the boat. A cordial greeting.

Hey Tristan, have you thought about giving a rundown of both of your rigs? I know it’s the kind of thing you usually do with beautiful shots and storytelling (which I absolutely love :)), but I’d be interested in that. Also... I think you would be a great person to tell your story of how you got into cycling long distances and the most important things you’ve learned along the way. Btw I was wondering about the ferry thing (and electro mobility in general). Ditching fossil fuels is obviously necessary but as I understand it, we don’t really have a replacement yet... with renewable energy not being nearly there to supply our current needs and nuclear power being a really bad idea period. If you’ve got some info to share on the topic I’d love to hear it! :)

Hi Rick! Thanks a lot for the video tips, they’re on my list for later this year. I sometimes struggle to realize that I have a lot of information to share since it feels really normal to me to know all these things. On the topic of the ferry, I encourage you to check out the electric ferry episode that’s up on the Fully Charged KZread channel. They did an amazing job at documenting and explaining the ferry that crosses all day long, every day, between Sweden and Denmark. Remarkable technology is already within reach today, there just has to be enough drive (and money, I guess) in a company to face the change. But with most ferry companies earning money constantly, especially commuters like in the Canary Islands (where foods and goods need to be shipped in (petrol) trucks). In general, Fully Charged is a great channel to find out about everything renewable, electric and clean there is!

Yes! Get some e-bikes or electric cars to show us the real beautiful places of these great islands! They are way to beautiful and unique for explorations that are stopped by bad weather or roads that are too steep or difficult for cyclists. Yeah I know...it might corrupt the concept of your channel, but at the end of the day the question is: Do you want to explore, see and experience something very beautiful or do you want to ride your bikes at all costs even when it restricts your experience. Still a great video and thumbs up!!! I like your overall attitude and camera work/editing!!! Thumbs up!

Noooo to chEat bikes!!!!! That would be so hypocritical saying the ferry company should use electric ferries then you buy E-bikes because you cannot be bothered to pedal for yourselves. I follow you because you are true cyclists. ChEat bikes would change all that. I would have just cycled through the tunnel with lights on. There wasn't exactly a lot of traffic like it was rush hour. The fact that Bee is fluent in Spanish and doesn't take any shit I would pity anyone who tried to fine you both ;@)

Well... I’m always a little disappointed when people express their thought of e-bikes negatively, with the ‘cheating’ as main subject. E-bikes are enabling an entirely new group of people to enjoy cycling and, in fact, 1 of every 2 bikes sold in the Netherlands is electric and contributes to the amazing bike infrastructure and mindset we have there. E-bikes for touring, especially in a place like the Canary Islands, will enable a lot more people to cycle up to the peaks of their high volcanoes without the knee strain we were dealing with. Our knees were in considerable pain when we returned home, and we wish E-bikes would’ve been an option for us. E-bikes aren’t cheatbikes, they’re bikes that help the rider achieve goals they didn’t think they’d be capable of before. So try and see it a little bit more positively, Alex. A negative attitude doesn’t help :) A quick note on the tunnel - we prefer to stay safe, and cycling 10% for a few km’s in a bendy tunnel isn’t exactly a great way to do that. Appropriate infrastructure would be of much bigger help.

@@tristanbogaard Sorry but we are going to have disagree. I hate eBikes or chEat bikes with a passion. I have ridden all my life many decades because I am passionate about choosing a method of transport that does as little damage to the planet as possible. If that means working a little harder riding up steep hills or mountains then it is an effort I am willing to give. Cheating Ebikes in comparison are so damaging to the environment to produce. Firstly there are all the mines digging for the raw material precious metals to make the motors and batteries. Then there is all the industry to make them and the extra energy beyond a normal bike to make them. Bad polluting industry. The batteries are very bad for the environment durinng manufacture and when they reach the end of their life they will just be discarded thrown in a canal to pollute the water. Most will not be recycled responsibly. And then there is the constant recharging which relies on an electricity grid which a traditional bicycle does not. The traditional bicycle is far more environmentally friendly and I will defend, support and continue to ride one until I die. I will never ever ride a cheating Ebike. You are both young health fit and strong people who are more than capable of continuing to ride your conventional bikes. You just need to sort out your gearing to suit where you are riding not take the easy lazy option of riding an electric bike. People who do so haven't really thought about the environment or if they have, they just don't care! Electric bikes are an environmental scandal waiting to happen and are destroying the values of traditional cycling. People are just so frikin' lazy. Please don't be like that. Don't do it.

@@alexmorgan3435 People filled with hate are especially unsympathetic and should solve their own problems before complaining. Hating with a passion is not only a poor statement it is after all a proof of a bad mindset. Calling E-bikes cheating is really funny because even a normal bike is cheating over walking, any car is cheating and flying is THE BIGGEST CHEAT EVER. This point of view is just wrong- E-Bikes pollute more than normal bikes, thats clear. But any faster and more powerful transportation method will pollute more. I hope you did not have a car because thats just cheating. You should try to do the same as Tristan before complaining and diffusing your hate from home. Batteries can be and are recycled. Are Carbon frames recycled? Are your plastic shoes recycled? Or are they simply burned at the end of their lives? Put things in perspective then maybe you will see that Tristans statement is not so hypocritical than you think. Stop hating :)
