Cycling the Canal du Midi from Source to Sea

Trudy and Mike embark on a cycle tour tracing the route of the Canal du Midi from its source to the Mediterranean. We follow the UNESCO recognised canal through beautiful French countryside and towns and cities of the Occitanie region. The holiday package was supplied by Relax Bike Tours.
Relax supplied the bikes, booked the hotels, transferred or luggage every day, picked us up at the airport, and supplied a road book with the route and much more.

I cycled in France last year with my wife....never again... she was always miles behind even when I was going as slow as I could...😅 mind you we are in our 60's..😮

I love the 1960s style of music you selected for your video. I just love the whole scenery.

We hired a boat in 1994 for 4 weeks to cruise from the Etang de Thau almost to Toulouse and return, so it was interesting to see your video of the canal. Brought back many memories, altho it was our least favorite of all the canal trips we have done in France and England. But your nightly accommodations were fancier than ours!

Thank you. Coincidentally, as a child I had many holidays on boats on the waterways of France, Ireland, England and Scotland, but now we cycle, and stay in hotels. Glad you enjoyed the video.

I paddled my kayak from Royan to Ventigmiglia, 18 days. Live in Bèziers now before that Séte before that Brixham, south Devon, UK.

Thanks very much for this fantastic video, guys! Are there any nasty parts you recommend skipping? I see many barges with bikes on board - would be great if I could pay to do this for a section.

Thank you Conor, no really very bad sections but if we were to do the trip again I think we would start in Toulouse rather than at the Lake Saint-Ferréol. Although the Lake is of historical importance to the Canal, and the Hôtellerie du Lac was fantastic, the path to join with the canal is rough in parts and best suited to a mountain bike. Maybe it has been improved since we made the video. The detour on our route to Narbonne along the Canal de la Robine was very pretty, but you have to be prepared for a few hours of rural roads to rejoin the canal du Midi at the Tunnel de Malpas We read that the section between Agde and Marseillan Plage was not so good so we made an interesting detour from Agde through Marseillan before reaching Marseillan Plage. Leave a cycle free day in your trip for the spectacular Carcassonne, and maybe a day to unwind in Sête at the end of the trip, which has many interesting shops, a great food market, and real working harbour. I am sure you will enjoy cycling The Canal du Midi. Try contacting Relax Bike Tours in Beziers as they now have lots of different route options, and may also be able to advise if the path from the lake has been improved. Thanks again for your comment, sorry it took me so long to reply.

We loved your video thank you to you both. We are thinking of doing the same route, could you answer me some questions as we already have our bikes here in France so we will not be booking a tour. What month did you do it? How many km's per day did you do? Do you remember the name of the company that transported your luggage? Thanking you Julie

Julie, thank you for your comment. I am sure that you will enjoy cycling along the Canal du Midi. We made the trip in October, and there was light rain for part of one day and significant wind on some days. It was always warm enough. The advantage of October was that the path was very quiet. Make sure you allow an extra day to visit Carcassonne like we did. The days on our tour were between 45km and 60km, cycling along the canal is not as fast as a road cycling tour. Check out the details under the video where I have included links to the routes on Komoot. Our luggage transfer and bike hire was done by Relax Bike Tours in Beziers ( relaxbiketours.com ). Check with Relax they may have a luggage only option,, but having done several of these type of holidays in Europe I would always recommend using the hire bikes the tour operator as you are always guaranteed that the bikes suit the terrain.
