Cycling in a mix of snow and rain in 's-Hertogenbosch (NL)
[Ep. 971] People cycle regardless of the weather. On Friday morning 20 January 2023 there was a code orange weather warning for 5cm of snow with the advice to work from home. What we really got was sleet; a wet snow that melted almost instantly which resulted in this video that proves the Dutch are not only fair-weather cyclists.

Bad weather and cycling in The Netherlands. My dad lived North of Amsterdam and worked in Amsterdam, for 38 years. Every morning he took his bicycle and rode to the Wibautstraat in Amsterdam, some 18 km for him. At the end of the afternoon he rode his bicycle back home. One morning in app 1960 there was a lot of snow and my mum felt sorry for him and asked him to take the train to work this time. In the evening, later than normal he came home. He stated, "Never again! I was late for work and now I'm late at home too"... tomorrow I go by bicycle again. It was the only legendary day in all his professional career that he took the train to work, all other days he commuted by bicycle. His employer gave him 2 cents per km and every 4-6 years he bought a new bike of that money. With a dad like that you try the same. I commuted app 30 years to work by bicycle. My dad stopped living because he didn't want to live anymore at the age of 93, after his girlfriend died, but his body still was fit.
The soundscape is truly impressive, with the city seeming alive with the audible murmur and the crunch of snow beneath feet and bicycle tires. Until 2:38
loved the bicycle umbrella!
It's more or less the same here in Poland and people cycle 😊
Generally i enjoy snow cycling more than the rain, but this slush has me a little nervous. Worst of both it seems.

Yep, it was worse of both! In the night and next days it got colder but snowing had stopped. Slush got hard and in ridges where is had not been driven away by traffic. Very bumpy and slippery in the neighborhood streets. Main routes were all good. I live in the town shown, but had a little more snow.
Very nice tour, i love it my friend! 💚✨
Sad weather, sad Hieronymus Bosch at the end of the video... But cyclists are COMING! They don't give up, they are heroes! A wonderful optimistic video, thank you, Mark!
We're getting a bit of a snow storm here tonight; I can't wait to go cycle somewhere in it tomorrow. It's always so pretty and I love the crunchy sounds of the wheels on the frozen pavement ❤️
I always look forward to your vids, Mark.
This is so comfy to watch.
Loved "The Society Shop" at the end lol. Great video, thanks for sharing!
1:46 No problem keeping the fresh fish cold this day 🐟🧊😅
Oh wow! Very different from our visit in Nov. I do find it to be pretty once the snow accumulates, plus I don’t particularly like rain just above the freezing mark. hehe 😅

Lovely! Or rather: glovely 😁
thanks enjoyed the ride
@bicycledutch could you do a video on snow removal in the Netherlands? I am really curious how they prioritize plowing cycle routes, sidewalks, car streets, and trolley routes (what is plowed first? What different machines they use?)

Just be carefull out there, you had a fall in the snow before, I seem to remember. Mind you, there was a lot of more snow then.Hope there won't be too much more this year. Stay warm🙂👍.

Toch wel gezellig de sneeuw, een klein beetje winter.

I must not fear. Fear of bad weather is the cycle-killer. Fear of snow is the little-death that jams my chain. I will face my fear with good winter clothing and will permit it to pass over me and under me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to look at the cyclepath. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I and my cycle will remain.
Ah, 4:07, the Wilhelminabrug. Going from the city center to the station, or vice versa. With its beautifully carved pillars at the Station side of the bridge. One of the very few places where one still is able to find a Swastika in the wild in a Western country.

and at 4:20 you are actually driving towards the pillar it is to be found on. I just think it is funny how they got removed everywhere, and people do not want to be confronted with it, yet we in 's-Hertogenbosch still show it in a carving on a pillar. The carving/sculpture or how you wanna call it is about the history of this city, and it OBVIOUSLY should include that episode as well, hence why the artists displayed the Swastika right there. (just for those interested in history, nothing more. Am not promoting anything. )

Way fewer other-than-omafiets in this weather, but the fresh fish trailer is uncrowded yay!
and the most annoying thing during this trip is all that car noise...

Mark, ik ben niet echt bekend met Den Bosch.(Dat gaat naar Den Bosch toe, zoete lieve Gerritje) Het beeld op de grote markt, het plein waar je de markt filmt, welk figuur is daar uitgebeeld? Liefs leafs (^.^)

There is some truth in that. Flat countryside makes cycling more effective. I have some vacation experience in France. On the Mediterranean Sea I ride my bicyle, but in the Ardèche I leave it on the trailer. But the same goes for heavy winds in the coastal regions of The Netherlands. There is not much difference in needed energy riding up hill or against a storm.
Cycle with a cap🧢 and you won't go back. It keeps the snow and rain out of your face.
Zout op de weg.
Disgusting weather. Give me proper dry snow over this any day
