Cycle Touring the Hebridean Way
Family cycle tour the length of the Hebridean Way, Easter 2019. A long edit for family viewing when we are all older. The boys ages at the time were 12,10 & 8. We cycled just over 200 miles over 11 days, with nine wild camps, one hostel and one friend's house as stopping off places. We were fortunate to enjoy mostly dry weather although cold and windy at times.

A great achievement for you all! Well done!! You did well with the weather mostly by the looks of it. Great video, thanks for posting.
Well documented Dad and congratulations on your family’s achievement. A great family effort and enjoyable watch. I’m on my own Bike touring Hebridean islands adventure April 2023. Thank you I learnt a lot.
Thank you for letting us see your surgery. It helps us understand the reality of the trip.
Absolutelly great . Μπράβο from Greece.….
Just booked our trip to cycle it August 23. You did a great job with the kids.
What a great gift to your family. Your children will have all of these wonderful family adventures chronicled. I enjoy them too!
ohhh, just find your channel, love that!! we follow your adventures! Take care!
Absolutely brilliant effort from the whole family, well done. Great video, very interesting.
The Hebrides look stunningly delightful; what an adventure! And such warm and supportive touring partners! Lovely family! Thanks for the upload.
Ahh, cycling with kids. Brings back memories of the delights when ours were that age. They are now near 31 and 29 now. One is still a keen and active cycle-tourist, the other has done nothing since the last tour of Tasmania when she was 18. Touring with young kids always takes on an extra level of organisation. Well done to take on such a journey.
What a great bike tour you have done with your family, there is nothing sweeter than seeing a family bike touring. We cycle tour here in Australia, (not camping but stay in caravan park cabins) and loved watching your KZread video. It would have been a challenge cycling in an area that is virtually treeless, no shelter from the wind. It reminded me and my wife of the times we have cycled at a place in Tasmania named Bothwell as it was first settled by Scottish migrants, getting blown off our bikes on each time we cycle through there. Again so lovely to see a family getting out of the 'easy life' and being adventurous. Awrrebest from Oz.

OMGosh Ian & Rach, your family is amazing! Especially your kids. How you managed such a great distance with such young children is a testament to your amazing parenting abilities. Magnificent scenery. It is making me want to do it also. Thank you for the inspiration :) Dave from down-under
Those young boys parents could be proud of their achievement to cycle a journey like this
Love your videos and love your life philosophy. You have fantastic kids who are really benefiting from the life experiences you are giving them,as important as formal education in creating well rounded characters.Keep these wonderful videos coming!

Amazing trip you've done, with your family. More insperation for my plan to do this in May 21. I've got hooked on Scotland after doing Sky & Mull 2019, then Sept 2020 did NC500. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures, keep up the good work, memories your boys will therish for life.

What a fab video! Really enjoyed watching it. Well done boys! I've done it a few times before and looking forward to doing it again once this lockdown is over 😁 .. I will be joined by my nephew on his first ever cycle tour ... Did you get your bikes on the bus from Ullapool ??

Hi Sharon, thanks for your comments. I got the bus to Fortwilliam and then hitched to Oban (which was quicker than waiting for the bus) and then drove back to Ullapool to pick everyone up. Took a whole day!
A most excellent adventure , what stoical young men . I trust the hike and pick up of the van at the end went according to plan . How did you keep all of the phones and kindles charged ?

Enjoyable video,Would have been better without music when theres dialogue.
Great Video here, thanks a lot. I am planning to do the trip some time over the summer with a couple of mates and had one or two questions for you please? How difficult were the climbs inbetween Leverburgh and Tarbert, and then Tarbert and Ballalan? How well signposted was the whole route - did you need to use both electronic maps and paper maps? And lastly, was there plenty of spaces of the side of the road where one could pitch a tent, or would you have plan ahead to find flat land ? Thanks very much, and love the video.

Hi Archie Generally well signed and you could almost ride without a map but some of the signs are quite small so can be easy to miss if you're not careful. The two hills you mention can be a challenge but not desperate and have been cycled by an 8 year old, albeit with some walking. Going S to N the first two thirds is easier to find campsites. The vegetation very tussocky in last third making it harder to find suitable spots but being imaginative should help. Have a great time it's a fantastic trip. Hope you get good weather.
- It was a journey of courage. Passage through not very cozy, inhospitable terrain and gloomy weather. I give a lot of respect to the boys and especially to the little one - he is a hero. Now they have the idea of overcoming other spaces ... - And parents will be left with care for them and help in developing plans for future trips ... - P.S. And what does the expression "russian impressions" on 18/47 mean? - Is it an alogism in action or a trend in art?!. It looks like 1, with which I agree after 24.02.22, attack on Ukraine ... 🚲🏆❣

Hi Thank you for your comments. The boys watch a lot of you tube videos and at the time were enjoying experimenting with Russian accents! This was back in 2020. This year we are planning to cycle 700 miles the length of France.

There probably are GPX files etc of the route that you can download from somewhere but I don't know. We just used paper maps in case we couldn't get internet connection. It's also pretty well signed on the ground.
How many ‘proper’ campsites did you use? Looks like a great trip. Well done to the little ‘uns.

We didn't use any commercial campsites. Not even sure we saw any. Camped in Ullapool before getting bus back to Oban.

You can tell the kid could care less. Why do parents drag kids off to do things they hate. Guaranteed to turn the kid off to it for ever.
