Cybersecurity and Networking just changed!

Cybersecurity and Networking just changed with major announcements from Cisco.
Cisco have announced new platforms and solutions that integrate AI and native telemetry to stop cyber attacks and better manage networks. This includes the major goal of simplification.
A very big thank you to Cisco for sponsoring my Cisco Live trip and this video.
In this video I interview Jeetu Patel and Jonathan Davidson about the future of networking and cybersecurity (and the effects of AI on all of us).

Hey david can you bring someone who can do a workshop or atleast guide us on using machine learning to prevent cyberattacks or analyse malware and show that with practical example or even better give us a code sample to code along with , what i am saying is we need a AIML tutorial project video specifically for cyberscurity. It would look good on resume and also we newbies will gain some skills .

Part of the biggest issues is that companies don’t value security. You can’t run a security platform without people to read the results deal with the SIEMs and all the technologies. It’s like I heard at one of my security meeting no company has money for security until they get hacked. Same issue here.

People in general do not value security. It takes a highly motivated person to be able to conduct a cyber attack and outside the small handful of countries allowing the practice, the only people conducting these attacks are either going to be kids who don't understand the consequence or extremely desperate people.

I like the Meraki stuff from an ease of use standpoint. But for most of the small to medium business space I’m in the cost is hard to swallow. Behind payroll a lot of companies their largest cost is IT. And the more they spend in subscriptions the less they have for my labor. They get frustrated at what they are paying out and I get frustrated that I have to keep fixing the same things because they don’t have the budget to do what I recommend. It is a vicious cycle that is not solved by them having to increase cost. My two cents for what it is worth.

Great video, David. Thank you. Having been in networking for over 20 years (mostly Cisco), networking has always struggled with security and management. From CIscoworks to HPNA, there has never been a single solution that makes managing ACLs and route maps very easy at scale. They are either too slow, error prone, or rely on old technology. When Cisco switched to the growth by acquisition strategy as opposed to development, I feel like consumers have ended up with a bunch of disconnected tools that work well individually but don't integrate well together. Also, enterprise companies tend to sweat their network equipment for long time to get the max depreciation. Cisco tends to lag way behind in the ability to programmatically manage routers and switches unless you spend a lot of money for the latest equipment and licensed software solution. I know a lot of companies that are still managing 2800/3800 series routers with in-house Python programs using Netmiko, NAPALM, and ciscoconfparse with an in-house API just to attempt any automation regarding baseline config drift for ACLs, TTY lockdown, etc. Along with the enormous cost for SmartNet to have access to new IOS versions that have open security issues, this makes a recipe for disaster for network security threats. This is one of the reasons companies are looking using pfsense, developing their own network OSs, and using more open source monitoring and alerting tools for security.

Good interview David, learned a lot here. Question, they mentioned Connected Vehicles, what tools are they pitching to manage the Smart ITS networks that support these initiatives? Local agencies and State agencies in some instances are just now starting to talk about how to securely connect and communicate with all these disparate devices and this arena still seems really fragmented and complex to manage. Curious to see what your thoughts are on that?

Every new technology is often feared but often brings many new opportunities. People who don’t adapt find their wages cut or jobs disappear altogether. I saw my father’s wages fall because he refused to invest in updating his skill set even though the industry was changing. He eventually retired early. ChatGPT is forcing changes that should have occurred already but for many reasons had not. It will still take probably a decade for every industry to utilize these changes. Tech industry is always first because there are no compliance or regulatory rules to follow.

One of the first things I noticed in learning Cisco routing & switching was running CLI and learning syntax is simply another security protocol. What can a bad guy do if they penetrate your network and get past a banner if they have no idea how to run commands? Well now, they can just run your own AI assistant against you and have a field day.

The melding and joining of OT and IT has profound implications both positive and negative, but we're still very much rolling out OT control environments that don't even encrypt the communication channels and, moreover, *don't plan to* encrypt the channel because the chips involved don't have the processing power because reliability is favoured.

"A client has millions of firewall rules". You know what, if you buggers had set firewall rules to default DENY instead of wide open access to everything and their mothers we wouldn't need so many damned rules.
