I just ... Wow I'm drooling over this bike
The work you put into this bike and video edit is huge! and it shows
I love the result. Fantastic job.
Awesome build Will! I saw the bike today on Instagram and straight away could see the attention to detail. One of the best CX builds I've seen. Congrats! Must have been a lot of hard work...

Is it hard to find parts for the engine?
@willnicholson9859
7 жыл бұрын
Even in New Zealand I found it quite easy. In saying that I bought most of the parts from the US or UK. A few from Australia and then the more common stuff locally. You'll find you can find stuff quite cheap online.

That's such an awesome build! - Reminds me alot of my cx500, yours just has greater attention to detail! I was wondering what the LED number showing under the tank is?
@willnicholson9859

Mikael Hessellund Mikkelsen thank you! There is a digital coolant temp gauge under the tank. Far more accurate than the stock gauge!
I love your patience and craftsmanship mate 👍😊 really nice journey video too. I trust you'll be enjoying that bike a whole lot... ✌️I'm also curious how you re-did the coolant reservoir 😉

Thank you! Unfortunately the bike is in storage at the moment, but I look forward to a few good rides in the future. Making a coolant reservoir is actually very easy and can be made of anything. I have seen beer cans etc used. Just make sure it has an overflow.

This is unreal. Great job on the build. I've been interested in doing a build myself and have been doing a bit of research, but I'm still not quite sure where to begin. What would you recommend is the best way to go about learning an a-z on a build like this?
@willnicholson9859
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! It was great fun working on the CX. As far as any recommendations, honestly the bet way is to get yourself a bike, a workshop manual and go from there. There are so many bike specific forums if you have any mechanical work to do (although take some of the comments of these forums with a grain of salt!). Old Japanese bikes are a great way to go. They are easy to work on, parts are pretty easy to get hold of (depending what part of the globe you are), they are reliable bike, affordable and make great bases for Cafe Racers. Sites like BikeEXIF and Pipeburn are great for inspo. All the best for your project! Get wrenching!
👍
Amazing Job. Just wondering how you did the tail/frame. It´s always the difficult part of the CX.
@willnicholson9859
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim! It was one of the trickier parts of the build. I designed mine in CAD first and got some of the bends CNC bent which helped. But to be honest the fabrication wasn’t too difficult and makes the CX frame look a lot better!
That is awesome, love the attention to detail. I have a cx500 custom originally by Zeus. But it needs some owrk and the attention you apply. Would you be interested in looking at the bike?

@willnicholson9859

+Christian Solinski thank you! As far as buying a CX500, eBay or similar is a good place to look. Otherwise there is a very active CX500 forum which has a For Sale section. With old bikes you don't need a lot of specialist tool, just metric wrenches etc. I bought a small ultrasonic cleaner for rebuilding my carbs. Budget can be as big or small as you want really. If you're on a tight budget be aware of bikes which are not running as they could cost you a lot more in the long run. Best advice would be to get stuck in and give it a go. Buy a workshop manual specific to your bike and you'll be right!
Congratulations on an excellently executed restomod! You've struck a balance that could arguably be factory finished. White/Black the perfect colour combo. I have 3 questions. 1. What's the blue digital gauge under the fuel tank, above the carbs left side? 2. Whats the alloy bottle on the right of the radiator for? 3. And probably most importantly. What led to you staying with the pair of rear springs, and not chopping out the seat subframe and adding the seat support to the frame backbone. It's a good look on the CX500, and you clearly have the skill sets to execute it. It's by no means a criticism. Purely observation. I'm certain everything you chose to do was with good reason and sound judgement. Am just curious to your theory. Great video. Thanks for sharing
@willnicholson9859
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 1. It's a digital temperature gauge which measures the coolant temp. The gauge also beeps if the bike were to overheat. 2. Radiator coolant overflow reservoir. I have done this for two reasons. Firstly the factory plastic overflow bottle I had was brittle and split making it unusable. Secondly, I wanted to free up space where it was originally located to hide some electronics and wiring - I didn't want any wiring to be visible. Plus I like the look of the aluminium reservoir mounted on the side of the radiator. 3. Good question. I do like mono-shocks - both the aesthetic and for performance but I have heard mixed reviews of CX's which have been converted. Theres a couple of reasons why I keep with the twin shock set-up. a/ I wanted to be able to take a pillion passenger. While not impossible with a mono-shock, I felt the seat may have looked too long visually as there would be little framing underneath. b/ Rigidity. Again, with the pillion length seat I thought this style of frame would be more rigid. c/ Style. While the later CX's were built with a mono-shock, mine wasn't. To me the twin shock is very much of 'the era' and I think it was quite fitting for the aesthetic I was going for. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for your reply. I agree, the alloy bottle looks cool. Not much space to place the electrics inconspicuously. A great solution. Looking forward to the next build. Maybe the Superleggera?

Yeah there's a bit under the tank and in the headlight bucket. Hahaha thanks! I'm not sure I'll ever have the budget to do a SupperLeggera, but I am toying with the idea of an older super sport or similar... One day when I have a garage and the budget.

@willnicholson9859
7 жыл бұрын
The wiring looms did vary slightly over the years of production. Mine has a lot of new electrical parts so I used the factory schematic as a base, Your best best will be to head here: cx500forum.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=CX_Wiring_diagram You will be able to find the appropriate wiring schematic for your bike. If the bike is stock the electrical system isn't too complex once you have a good diagram.

Beautiful bike man. Did you buy the seat? if not how difficult was it making it yourself?
@willnicholson9859

Thanks Chris! I made the seat myself. The seat base is made from a lightweight plywood core which was then vacuum laminated with tri-axil fibreglass. The hardest part was shaping the foam. Leather work is pretty standard.

No worries! Yes, I will never sell it. I've put way to much time into it haha! You can do a lot with not a lot of money. I had very little when I started the project, but worked on painting, removing and modifying existing parts. The bits that cost the most is things like suspension, tires, fancy gauges etc. Mines definitely been built on a budget. I shopped around for every part. All the best if you do decide to start a Cafe Racer build!
Hey bro, so no major frame adjustments or welds except the rear hoop for the seat?

@@willnicholson9859 can you male a little video ? 😂
Hm just a matter of time before this video goes viral!
I love the bike but the only thing I don't like is how those rear shocks face straight up and not at an angle, the two lower bars of the rear subframe are welded too far back they need to be welded more further forward in order to get those shocks at the proper angle, that is literally the only thing I don't like about this bike, sorry not trying to be an ass, it's just the perfectionist in me, I do have an 82 CX500 of my own, and three other Honda's
@willnicholson9859
4 жыл бұрын
Fair comment. If I had my time over I would have done several things differently, but it was the first bike I'd ever done anything more than basic routine maintenance on. I did most of the work in friends garages, in the kitchen and on the ground outside without fancy tools or machinery. It was a simple build compared to many online, but I am still proud of it.
