PKT machineguns were used on Finnish CV90 because so many PKTs in storage due to BMP1 and BTR purchases and also because infantry uses PKM as their squad level machinegun in mechanized forces and most other forces as well.

It's also just a good machinegun. At least the PKM is very reliable . Remember running a training camp on it and I think it jammed like twice during two days of shooting. Where as the finnish light machinegun (been a long time, don't remember the designation) would jam like once per shooter.

About the gun camera, at least for Finnish crews it was the driver who usually kept eye on that to see when to stop in to a position, so that the hull was protected but the gun clear. In other situations both the commander or gunner might check it as well.

Ah, of course Chieftain mentioned it, commenting too fast...

Gunner's main sight has a magnifier. It's a ring around the scope, which you rotate, to get the magnification you need or want. Though I don't remember how high it goes. I was a gunner in the very first full CV9030FI training company (2006-07). Only one before us was a practice group of 4 tank crews I believe. Ps. we also were issued with the Chinese AK knock offs you saw inside. That was for the commander, only one per vehicle. Other crew had to do with pistols.

17:45 We've replaced their monitor with a Original Gameboy, lets see if they notice. Huh, I was kind of expecting this thing to have a Salmiakki dispenser on board.

That's what the troop compartment cupola is actually for, it's a docking socket for the dispenser, it was too big to fit inside.

When it comes to a family of vechicles like this that's used by multiple countries in just as many variants, I find it extremely interesting to see the differences in how the different countries has decided to adapt the base vehicle to their national army priorities. It says a lot about the strategic doctrines and attitude of the respective nations towards the role of the specific vehicle. Would love to see a similiar video series on the Leo2 family.

Close your hatch when firing the cannon/machine gun or else your fumes won't be properly extracted from the turret ;-). I really like this vehicle it has so many different versions with the same basic layout it almost doesn't matter if you train on this one or the cv9035nld jus a few different systems and a gun flipped 90° witch leaves more room for the commander. Thanks for this video!

Glad to have been able to help at least somewhat! The name was close enough, although the last name comes from Italy. Really enjoyed the video, hopefully you'll continue the series. To anyone with experience on AFVs, do offer to help, it was fun thinking back to my times as the TC, even though I remembered less than I would have liked.

@@Ethnarches I myself only have experience of the swedish versions in IFV and ARV variant in double sided exercises... From the wrong end of the gun... Mostly when on foot... And my personal oppinion is that they drive far too quiet from the front than any tracked 26+tons vehicle has any right to be...

@@SonsOfLorgar yeah, especially with other noises masking the AFVs sounds, you can get surprisingly close to infantry without them noticing. The IR sight gives you great awareness of infantry in the vehicle and I remember surprising quite a few of them by sneaking up to a position from where you could lay down some serious punishment with the MG and especially the explosive multi purpose rounds in bursts. This was of course only simulation, but still it gave you a sense of its power against infantry.

@@Ethnarches yeah, you feel the vibrations through your feet before you hear the vehicle as soon as there's even the slightest wind to rustle the foliage. And then it's already too late to run.... One of the most significant emotional events with CV9040 I have had was in early february 2004 when I and four others on the B side were dispatched as forward observers at the edge of an open field. The squad leader took one private and the binoc to find a good spot while the rest of us with the radio were ordered to wait in a large shallow pit. About fifteen minutes later, the leader and the private came running over the edge, shouting at us to run. As soon as we got over the other edge of the pit we heard at least three MGs open up far to our right and a bit behind us. We kept running and jumped down a low, less than 1m, cliff, and the hit sensor rig of thd last guy to jump started beeping in mid air, indicating a total casualty.... Two of the others made it across a snowed over dirt road, I and threw myself in the snow next to a small pine tree just as the IFVs roared by at around 10-20km/h. I looked up and got an "oh shit fuck my luck" moment when I saw that the tracks of the closest IFV had passed only 15cm on the other side of the 15cm thick pine trunk I had been resting my helmet against... XD

As a Fin I am proud of your song.

Damn, was adding this to my watch later list to watch in the morning and now I got Monty Python in my head. No regrets.

I did my military service on the Swedish version of the CV90. We had brand new vehicles and the first with the "Effect Package" which was later developed into the CV90A (the A version is an enhancement over the baseline fyi).

@@SonsOfLorgar 97/98 so quite some time ago. It was the first year the Leopard 2A5(s) was in service as well but that was on the neighboring company which had tanks. It was also the last year that the Fortress of Boden was in service as it decommissioned on the new year. So old and new truly met as the army was comming out of the mass mass army of the cold war into a more modern and mechanized force. But that was cut short. About two months before my conscription tour was over the great slaughter of the Swedish military began and out Final Exercise was scaled down massively for budget costs.

@@AdurianJ yeah, I did mine in 03/04, two years later my regiment was dismantled and the regiment my dad had served at as an officer for most of his life was dismantled in 2001

As a comment to the "troopie" cupola. What the squad leader sees may be where the vehicle has been but if you think about it, they have the most relevant view for the dismounts. Because the infantry is going out the back of the vehicle. So they never have to dismount blind.

now I haven't used one practically but I did get to sit in the same turret in an AMV35, it may have had to do with the seat height or something, but in the gunner's seat there seemed to be no ergonomic way to get your face up to the Thermal monitor/Unity sight without either squatting on the seat or smashing your chin and lower jaw into the direct vision optic as you tried to crane your neck over it

My superivsor at my workplace did his service as a driver for one of those things. He has a few funny and horrifing stories about this aluminium shoebox. From what he told me, it sounds more dangerous to the crew and passengers than to the enemy.

Erai Hiryuu - I'm guessing you have never been inside an old M113 because if you have you would know there really aren't many switches. The M-113 is just a alluminum box with a driver and TC. All it has in it is a radio and driver controls. It doesn't have a weapon system unless you consider the mounted .50 cal or M249 on the top of the vehicle. This vehicle came out in 1960 and really hasn't change much at all lol.

I was a bit disapointed that you didn't introduce the drivers seat at all, but all and all good video! =)

Squad leader doesn't need to know what's in front of the vehicle; that's the crew's job. Dismounts have several meters of armor between themselves and whatever's in front of the CV90. SL needs to know what's going on around them so they have a picture of what needs to happen immediately after they get out

@@nercksrule for an "abomination" the CV90 has aced the procurement trials of at least five countries in competition against the Bradley, Marder, Warrior, BMP and others... (That said, I have no idea how much corruption played into those scores, but I doubt it was much as the countries in question are reputable as low-corruption, high professionality.) Also, what makes the CV90 an abomination in your eyes?

The reason for having a Russian PKP coaxial instead of a Western gun is historical: when Imperian Russia adopted the 7.62x54R round in the 1890s, Finland was part of Russia (since 1809). With independence in 1917, the Finns inherited a large stock of Russian infantry weapons, including rifles and machine guns in this caliber, and it was thus practical to stick with it. This came in useful in WW2 when large amounts of Soviet weapons and ammunition were captured and could be put to use, and the 7.62x53R (just slightly different) still remains the standard full-power rifle-caliber cartridge used by the Finnish Defence Force, now primarily in modern machine guns like the PKP and sniper rifles, though the (domestically designed) .338 Lapua Magnum is gaining ground in the latter. However, NATO standard 7.62x51 (.308) ammunition is used in, e.g., the MG3 on the Leopard 2.

Now that i think about it, there has been a low quantity of real armor around these places 🤔

4:21 - Grud. Those sodding things. There has to be millions of those lights sitting in stores all over the Western World. They were supplied GFE from the Customer and we were required to fit them to our designs. Then of course you are designing a welded boss pattern to mount them which means anything you want to retrofit later has to match the same mounting pattern and... Looks like you are stuck using Dome Lights for the life of these vehicles. I miss working in Land Systems.

I'm guessing the reminders are because the conscripts are trained on these vehicles. So the crews have variable proficiency and motivation.

Finland need new CV90s!

Question unrelated to the video, but I don't know where else I would be able to ask this of anyone. It's been reported in the military procurement news for a while that the US Army is looking to acquire 50mm cannons and the Marine Corps is examining replacing 30mm cannons with 40mm ones. These are barrel-change modifications of the Bushmaster III 35mm and Bushmaster II 30mm cannons. Now I had been aware for a while of a US Army trial that examined 25mm point-detonation projectiles versus 30mm and 35mm point-detonation and Programmable-fuse projectiles. While the 35mm programmable shells were able to get more "kills" per shot, the ammunition carriage in the same volume of space was so much lower that the 30mm programmable variants turned out to have the most "stowed kills" - so the Army should stick with its planned upgrade of 30mm Strykers. With this in mind, why is the Army suddenly looking at 50mm? I've read that the 50mm has "greater range" than the 35mm...which would only be possible if the 50mm had dramatically higher chamber pressure than the 35mm cartridge. I don't know a whole lot about the "chain gun" mechanism, so I *suppose* that's possible, but it should also be possible to just up the chamber pressure on the parent cartridge in that case... But the only way you don't go DOWN in "stowed kills" is if the 50mm has DRAMATICALLY higher killing potential, even over the "neckless" 40mm cartridges. So what's going on here with this proposed "50mm cannon" standard? Why would the Army be looking at an "upgrade" that degrades overall performance against the main target for IFVs?

Also Chainguns in 50mm is to big aswell, the 35mm bushmaster is huge, the 40mm Gau mounted on the A-10 takes up about 40% of the plane, and indiffrence to the bradleys and such platforms that use bushmaster guns whould lose alot of room to the munitions alone. As a dedicated support vehicle yes, but as a mainstay vehicle its overkill and pointless since it defeats the Purpose of the vehicle.

@@Zretgul_timerunner The 50mm cannon is actually the 35mm Bushmaster III with a barrel change (and a couple of additional parts swapped out. But still, the Bushmaster III is a fairly hefty piece of equipment in any vehicle.

I can tell from experience that it is quite a a tight space for your legs, but you usually are peeking up from the tank so it isn't that much of a problem. You do need to be mindful of how your legs are positioned though. Had to move my knees fast a couple of times so they wouldn't get crushed when swinging the gun up.

There was some accidents because of communication difficulties and some Swedish volunteers got killed by back flash of panzerfaust since they didn't understand finnish instructor. Otherwise Finnish is the only command language of Finnish military

Glyn Watkins finnish military is language segregated. all swedish speaking are trained as naval infantry in the navy in their own garrison separate from the rest of the navy. zero change of them ending up in an army mech inf unit equipped with CVs.

Two reasons. 1) Nobody with Swedish 9040 experience has come forward yet, and 2) The extra fuzing and programming isn't quite correct in the simulator yet.
