CV, pitch, frequency, and the surprising meaning of exponential FM

Музыка

As the step before a video diving into frequency modulation, I thought it was important to get everyone up to speed about how pitch & frequency relate to each other and are implemented not just in modular VCOs, but also under the hood of a lot of fixed-architecture synths.
If you've never really thought about how 440 hz turns into an A, why we use a volt per octave standard, or what's important about doubling the frequency of a pitch, then this video will help get you ready for the next video, all about Frequency Modulation.

    Thankyou..the Buchla system does have a pleasing symmetry to it..i think i need to get into the habit of tuning my oscillators.

    Good video, but I'd have used B flat as the sample note.

    Another fascinating and well constructed video! I suppose the oscillator is kind of like a string on an acoustic instrument. It can be any base pitch, but you need to tune it to the right frequency.

    You can use a sequencer and a sequential switch, instead of 2 sequencers, by the way.

    My first wiggles were on that exact kit! Picked it up at a garage sale with my allowance money. Got home and worked through a few projects until I got the “security alarm” which sounded off when the circuit was broken. Then I was like… can I change that beep? 🤔

    Exponential FM is why people tend to gravitatate toward linear VCAs and most all volume is linear. Ive ran into a few compressors that seem to utilize a bit of exponential behaviors those can be midly annoying too.

    Great video! Maybe I missed it, but did you explain why the oscillator you're using has two identical CV inputs? Is it specifically to do the type of sequencing with transposition you did earlier in the video, or is there another intended application?

  • @SoundVoltage

    @SoundVoltage

    @Perceptes In the end, I think the reason just came down to "well, I have a spot on the front panel for it..." :) Almost certainly one of the reasons was to be able to do that transposition, but that designer makes weird modules to do weird things, and this just gave it more flexibility for weirdness.

    great video, but thats why i use midi, seems i need to be good at math to use modular😂

  • @SoundVoltage

    @SoundVoltage

    Naw, you don't need to know math with modular any more than you need to understand the individual bytes going back and forth with Midi. I think of it that way because I'm a math guy, but you can have a long, happy life with modular and never really have to think about it. But for people who do want to go deeper -- there's this video. :)
