Just watching this guy try to cut that piece of wood made me nervous. No reasonable attempt to secure the job, or protect his left hand in particular, like he’d never tried to use a hand saw in his life or didn’t have imagination for what could go wrong. But yes, the T-shank blade holder is handy given the availability of cheap after-market blades out there for a range of job materials. Cutting small metal items with a metal jig saw blade is possible, but really as a last resort tool when a better saw is not available. Even a cheap hack saw would smoke a Surge with a metal jigsaw blade. I’ve found it helpful to “pilot cut” into a metal job to start the cut exactly where I want it (eg. shortening a bolt) using the edge file on the T-shank file included with the Surge, then swap over to a metal-cutting jigsaw blade, to finish the cut.

Leatherman is missing out not offering a Leatherman-branded t-shank kit designed for the Surge including various metal and wood blades. Even t-shank tools.

True that. Anybody know of a folding saw that’s essentially the surge minus all the tools? I’ve already got a bunch of LM but I don’t want a surge in my travel/go car kit as I keep my surge in my pocket

Especially now that the patents on the Surge have expired, and people are buying legal clones. So many tools and consumables that Leatherman could sell in addition to the file and saw.

I’ve had the best luck with Lenox general wood blades. It cuts both in push and pull and is less likely to hang up.

@@rjskum688 The small blade is for cutting tight curves. T-shank blades are mostly used in jig saws. The width of the blade determines how tight of a circle you can cut.

Lenox seems to be good on wood and Bosch on metal. If you get rid of the shaky base and maybe a small vise, things cut way better. I use my file a lot and often after a cut so I keep in the Surge and use the blades as needed.
