    For best manual cutting, use a long bladed hedge trimmer (like big garden scissors). It can easily cut 8+ cells at a time. Have the hardware cloth laying on the ground. Open the trimmer fully, and slide the bottom blade under the cloth until the vertex hits the cloth. Cut by using the ground, push down on the top handle while using the ground to push the bottom handle. Repeat til cut through,

    I have terrible tendinitis in my elbow, and it was from cutting things in the garden. It lasted over a year and I barely could lift anything with that arm; it was so painful- this is a game changer! When you have repetitive motion issues, you have to really pay attention and do what’s right for your body. You’re certainly not being a baby when you’re building chicken coops. You’re protecting your body for the long haul ;) Thanks for the great information

    Thanks so much! Yeah, the wire cutters start to hurt after a while, I would use them for small projects, but when I was going to build that large chicken run, I knew I had to do something different. These electric shears worked out beautifully for the large run. We just uploaded a tour video of it this morning!

    Angle grinder also works great, really fast (ditto with the eyewear using it). The easiest hand tool I've found are those Wiss roofing shear things, can cut several pieces per snip. Run about $17. Would never have thought scissors would work lol.

    I haven't built my full run yet, but I built a 2.5'x4' brooder box and mostly used tin shears. They were cutting about 3 wires per snip, so an improvement over wire cutters or scissors. I had to make a couple angled cuts also and I broke out the angle grinder for that. It worked great, as others have mentioned, but your electric shears still look faster and easier. I don't think I'll buy the electric shears for my run build though since I already have the angle grinder, but thanks for sharing. I didn't even know those existed.

    Those cutters are great but I still haven't found anything faster than a disc grinder with a cutoff wheel. The other problem I've had is the shears can get clogged up with wire. They do have the advantage of not needing a consumable disc though.

    You make it look easy. I went with the 16 gauge hardware cloth, do you think those shears will cut through it? Do you have hardware cloth under your run? We have ground squirrels and gophers that we want to keep out and I was wondering how deep to bury it to prevent chickens from scratching down and causing bumble foot or worse.

    Hello, We're raising chickens for the fist time here in the Santa Cruz Mtns. We are super aware of the predators in our area and I'm looking for advice on using the Hardware cloth. In building our run, we ran out of the roll that was 4'x25'. So we figured we could use some of the other hardware cloth that's 2'x5" and put the 2 pieces together and attach them with a flexible wire down the center (span of 2x4 run walls is 4') we're wondering if you feel that would be safe to do or should we just go out and buy another roll that will fit the span of 4ft. Thank you!

  • @d.a.tsun5104

    @d.a.tsun5104

    What type of predators do you have? If they're cougars or bears, no hardware cloth would stop them. If smaller, like racoons or opossums 'stitching' the 5' should work, even though rather unsightly, and tedious. I did that for one 'window' on my emergency coop and it worked and my fingers were tired from weaving the wire that I used to stitch the 2 pieces together.

  • @BockBockBouquet

    @BockBockBouquet

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, like the previous comment reads, I'm sure it would be fine to tie it, but I would probably just buy another roll so that it would just be one piece since it is not incredibly expensive for a piece like that. Santa Cruz is nice!

    I like to do my hardware cloth on whatever I am building flat on a table or the ground. I then use weights to hold it down while I screw/staple it down to the frame. I can't imagine how annoying it must be to try and lay it out on a vertical piece. If you are doing it vertically, maybe some clamps would help a lot.
