CUTTING and SHAPING LABRADORITE: Ways to get the best glimmer & shimmer from this stunning blue rock
When Kate's lapidary slab saw needs a repair job, she turns to her trusty trim saw to make some cuts on a chunk of labradorite. The iridescent blue of labradorite is famous around the world for its play of color and deep hues - but cut it the wrong way, and you'll end up with a brown rock. Using the trim saw, Kate cuts some beautiful slabs from the rough - and a few not-so-beautiful ones, to help understand why one turns out perfectly and another, not so much. It's all about the angles when cutting labradorite! After making a thick slab, Kate decides to try to make a heart (it IS Valentine's Day, after all!) and takes the piece to her Cab King grinding wheels. Jim steps in at the end, making the heart a little closer to perfection.

Labradorite is one of my favorite stones, but, between the fractures and the ability to lose flash while shaping and polishing, it is one of the hardest stones to get right. It doesnt take to heat well so dopping is a challenge. Doming a piece of Labradorite is not the best idea either. It shows better when its flat and you dont have to roll the stone to see it. The "eye" is the hardest thing to get right, meaning having the brightest flash even with your straight ahead vision. You dont want to have to hold it at some ridiculous angle to see the color. When you do get it right, its as beautiful as opal. Spectrolite is a more stable version of feldspar and has much more variety of color. Good job Katy!

@@shern1966 Do you mean spectrolite? Yes it is possible. Spectrolite has harder lines between colors , where labradorite blends colors. Spectrolite is exclusively from Finland and tends to be more opaque in its base where labradorite is more translucent. Origin is the main difference.
This is by far the best vid on labradorite on utube Kate, its jst goes to show if u cut even 1 or 2mm out u can loose the shiller altogether, very tricky stone, gr8 vid and loved the heart, turned out awsome 😊😊

I'm familiar with the stone but have never seen it raw and then slabbed. A heart shaped cab??!! You are braver than me. The Australian labradorite is nothing like the overseas versions. Ours is a simple, clear but slightly yellow stone that you can actually facet. I much prefer yours and have a few very select pieces that I love.

We do have access to our club’s lapidary shop so I think I’m going to have to schedule a session there for the labradorite. Great tips on directionality for cutting. Oh I wish I had a cab king. Ive been trying to learn how to polish or fix polished cabs and pieces of labradorite I have without having access to large machines. Is there any tips or tools to help me that you can suggest for polishing labradorite at home? And is it possible to bring out the laboresence more? I have silver flashes that I hear are hard to polish well and was told you can over polish the "flashes " out. And what can I use to bring out the shiller or give pieces a high polish? Really any help and tools to suggest would be of great help. I do enjoy your videos and im a handy person and used to do trade work but body retired before me so this for me is my happy place and still( for the most part) can use my hands to widdle and create. Minerals are all new to me but oh they are just wonderful especially labradorite it's my new obsession with over 40 pieces from rough to already carved, freeforms and cabs. But like I said I've never cabbed or cut minerals just trying to fix pieces that lack polish or not very good cutting so Im trying to figure out a way to do by hand and luckily these pieces are hand size or smaller and would love to learn as much as I can and what polishing compound and tools to use on it thank you and love to learn more

Aww... Cutting hearts is notoriously difficult... You're doing great! Basically move the shape back, look where the lump is, spend a second or two there, move the shape back, repeat. Once it looks symmetrical you have to keep the thing moving on your wheel or a flat spot happens... And an hour's work is ruined... Get some Opal and try with that... The pressure knowing you are working on something that's hundreds of dollars a gram is something else...

That definitely was the case with this rock! The labradorescense (wow, what a terrible word to type) was very strong, but leaving the plane even a few degrees made it disappear.

Labradorite is soft and easy to cut. You just can’t use a lot of force or pressure so it won’t chip up. Labradorite it’s about a five on the Mohs scale.. that’s why you see so many carvings made with it because it is easy to carve. But it is easy to lose your color.. to get that color positioned in the center. It does take some practice..
