Cut and fill mining is a favorite choice for steeply dipping and sometimes irregular ore bodies, and preferred by mines that require the capability of selective mining and adaptaility to variations in the rock mass. It is generally referred to as a small scale mining method.

@@cheddah9412 Mainly, to restore the weakened rockmass towards its original strength to give the mining method support so as to allow for further excavations of the adjacent rockmass. That is in addition to the video commentator actually telling you that the backfill is to become the working platform for the next level to be mined 0:45 . The backfilling with pastfill thereby serves the additional social and environmental benefits of preventing (significant) subsidence.
