I wanted to expand the uses for my utility trailer and adding the sides and cover to the trailer did exactly that. The sides are made from exterior grade OSB ripped down the middle, giving me 2' high side walls. It is attached to the metal frame simply by screws through the steel angles. The cover is made from a tarp - custom cut to size with grommets installed along the edge. Screws at the grommets hold the tarp down simply with the tension in the tarp. It got tested in the rain the first weekend I used it and it stayed completely dry inside!

May want to consider installing a removable rib from the front of the trailer to the rear panel...this will form a 'tent' in the tarp to shed water and keep it from pooling. Nice little rig.
You can get stencils cut on sticky-back vinyl from a print shop if you want. I get mine done at FedEx and the time it saves me is well worth it.
Nice. I would warn people about wet weather drawbacks though. I would suggest getting some arch in the tarp to shed water. Semi trailers have a 5/8" arch to shed water and snow. That's all it takes. I have seen adjustable wood arches used for boat cover tarps or some dry freight roof bows from a local semi trailer parts dealer. If you use the semi truck ones, they will probably need some thought in keeping them stable. Like using a 1x1 or 2x2 angle on both ends. Using them when going down the road will then need more stabilization fore/aft. Semi trailers glue themselves onto the roof itself for stabilization..
I have a very similar trailer. I've done a few different ways. Great video.
Nice job I used Grey trex boards on my cheap mesh bottom. Next I'm building the sides . Prolly gonna use 2x12 with trex over top for the finished look . Then black stencils for my company name, phone, etc .
I used osb and painted it with Kilz Over Armor before assembly, don't over think it folks, it's a trailer, thanks for a great video!

I agree....OSB shorter life but 1/2 the price and will go a few years
It's funny I was looking for a simple way to cover my trailer and I was like I know this guy, came a long way 💪
Looks great!!
Fantastic video, one of the best I've ever seen. No BS, quick & to the point.

a thing of beauty is a joy forever. good work.
I have a 5x10 trailer that I wanted to do something like this to. This is pretty informative, going to steal some ideas.
I'm gonna buy one of those soon and I didn't like how low the sides were, perfect solution
Needs water proofing
te felicito a ti y a la muchacha que te ayudo a hacer ese triler les quero bonito y fino
Seems to me the 2X4 backing made it stronger where it was already strong because of the steel side bracing but it sacrificed storage width. Can that cover take highway speeds and rain and snow?
Love the music, production values, pre-planning of shots, you had me up to the end...THEN YOU BLEW MY MIND WITH THE WINGED WHEEL! GO RED WINGS!!!!!!
Excellent video and what a great idea for the top.
I like the design. The roof cover was very interesting to see. Great idea
Eres un puro crac el mejor sin duda saludos desde España
I really like the idea of the cover
Nice looking setup! I would have def used PT vs. OSB for sure as that stuff will have to be replaced sooner then later! What did you use to secure the plywood to the trailer frame?

It's 3 years since I did this and it's just starting to flake, I'm pretty impressed by that performance really. I just used some exterior grade screws and drill some holes through the metal frame.

Jackman Works no bolts needed?
That looks like an 8 foot trailer. Are you still able to fit a sheet of plywood in it laying down flat now that the interior dimensions are a little smaller?
The cover is brilliant. Why didn't I think of that! I'm going to do something similar! What is it you used to clip it down and what material is that on top?
Excellent tutorial ! 🏆 I thought the osb board would disintegrate in the rain. I would have used treated plywood !

It did eventually, but the exterior grade OSB is surprisingly robust. It was meant to be semi-temporary, but I just took it off the trailer last a couple years ago, so 6 years is even better than I expected!
Around 2:13 I can't really see how he secures the wood panels to the metal railing. I was hoping someone might have input on this? Also this is a very cool idea. Looks nice. And very useful. You can do this to convert it to like a teardrop camper or anything you want really. Also multi-function possible. Thank you.
I do like it 🎉
This is great. How has the top held up since you posted?
What size screws did u use for plywood to the 2x4 and for the frame to the trailer thanks
Hola amigos los felicito un buen proyecto muy bonito también estoy fabricando el mío tengo una fábrica de muebles un abrazo sincero
Nice video..... I have a 4x8 lawn trailer something like yours and want to put taller sides. Does your have a roof?
I wood have painted the wood matching your car, then painted your company name to match the black on your car. Can you ya dig it!
Hey, what was you gas mileage pulling this? Curious as I did something similar but my walls are 4ft tall. Wondering how much better fuel economy would be at 2ft rather than 4ft. Thanks in advanced.
That plywood will swell up when it rains 🌧 or gets damp from hauling anything wet. The plywood is ok as long as it's covered. It looks good and I bet it's a lot cheaper than most plywood but I don't think it's gonna last long.
There's no doubt the top tarp will flap while driving especially on the highway and should it be raining also....I'm sure you get the picture.
Red isn't the best color to use on the OSB... Black is much easier to read.
Do you recommend anything to maybe treat the OSB with to increase it's water resistance?

any outdoor paint lol
I have an issue with the floor of my trailer. I have small ~ 1" tubes along the floor for wiring on both sides that prevents the wood sides from going the whole way to the floor. Do you have something similar? If so, how did you tackle that?
@JackmanWorks
6 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a pain, all of the wiring for my trailer is run underneath so there's nothing in the way. Sounds like it might be worth rerouting those wires somewhere else to get them out of the way
nice ... !
Any tips for recreating the tarp lid?
Great video but the best part???? What was that jam that was playing during the video? Pretty good stuff right there.
Is there an advantage to using deck boards for the bottom over a sheet of plywood?
What ! genius
I like the simplicity! 2 questions: 1)Trailer flooring. Is that just 1x6 decking? Any concern about water from the road? 2) Do you think you could put a hinged top on it?
@JackmanWorks
4 жыл бұрын
I think it's thicker, either a full inch or 1.5", it came stock on the trailer. It's not a perfect seal, but really for me this is just intended to be water resistant, not water proof.
the plywood if you don't paint it completely, then it can last for how long?
@JackmanWorks
6 жыл бұрын
It's been almost 4 years since I built this and it's still rock solid and I never painted it. A high quality OSB will last longer than you think. Definitely not a permanent solution but good enough for my trailer :)
nice
Hi Jackman How are you? Great idea. It´s very simple, practical and very very useful. Congratulations.
how did this do with the weather?
what did you use to drill through the metal of trailer?
Nice looking little rig. Gets you there and back and gets the job done.
a regular Jackman of all trades, eh
Great job...thanks for posting.
yeah man that's works pretty good I bet good job
what did you use for the floor of the trailer? gonna do this to my carryon trailer i picked up for cheap but got that crappy mesh floor that I want to put something over.
@JackmanWorks
6 жыл бұрын
The trailer just came with wood boards for the floor. They look like they're just pressure treated deck boards 1" thick and 6" wide
I don't get it. Why all the 2x4 backing and using particle board. Just bolt pressure treated 3/4 plywood to the metal trailer. simpler, quicker, and way more durable.
@JackmanWorks
6 жыл бұрын
Plywood by itself would be way less durable and going all pressure treated would double or more the cost of the build. I'm still using the same setup 3 years later so it seems to be worth it 👍👍
Nice job love the lettering idea
Pretty bush
Just paint your cuts for lengevity. Good video.
Will that board hold up in the weather?
How long did it hold up? You probably would have been better off dropping the money on PVC board instead of using OSB...
What did you use to cold the tarp down
Nice. You should build a lumber rack on top so your van put plywood and boards onto it for transportation. Just an idea. Great job!!
wont that thing crumble if it rains?
what are the materials used to make the cover
Looks great 👍
I see this was made in 2014, did the osb make it through 2015?
@JackmanWorks

Still using it now in 2019
the use of OSB ?
I'm thinking of borrowing your design just wondering; can you still fit lumber in there when you need too? Would a full size sheet of plywood fit in there with the sides?
HAHAH Shoutout for having an Element!!!!
Man I miss my Element. Nice job on trailer....GO WINGS!

are those walls two feet? What size plywood did you use, 1/2" ?
@JackmanWorks
4 жыл бұрын
Yep, just ripped the sheets in half. It's actually exterior grade OSB
A foodtruck pleese!!!
what material was used for the cover???
Nice video and trailer but I would not have used osb. Not going to last when it gets wet

Are you going to paint/stain it?
@T1Oracle

+Jackman Works Maybe, but it's a nice trailer and aside from lasting longer, I'm sure it would look great with a thick coat of black paint.
now that is creative! thank you for sharing. very useful.
Good work there son! the music though sounded 70s porn. But great work!
simple and practical. good job.
Great work man. What size trailer is that? I've got a 4 x 8 trailer that I built walls for a few years ago. I used 3' sections of ply over a 1/2 lap frame built from 2x2's that bolted to the top rail. The only reason I did it that way was so I could still lay 4x8 sheets down inside the trailer. If I had a 5 x 8 trailer it wouldn't have been an issue. I really like what you did with the tarp - tidy stow away. Hows the OSB holding up?
@JackmanWorks
8 жыл бұрын
Yep this is a 5x8, so plywood just squeezes in there :). The OSB has held up surprisingly well and the stencil even looks almost the same as when I painted it. The OSB has turned grey, but other than that it's actually holding together better than expected.

Hey Dustin, I've got a 4 x 8 trailer. Would you be willing to share a pic or video of your setup?
how well does it hold up to rain?
@JackmanWorks
7 жыл бұрын
+ewijntuin - it's not totally waterproof but does good when I need to cover stuff up at a job site for a storm. I never store stuff in here permanently
How tall do you think you could make the walls and keep them stable? Would 4 foot sides work?
Hey, I love the music. Norm from Hawaii.
Nice work!
Locate a local stucco supplier and buy the waterproof roll on membrane, I use it for homes to adhere styrofoam to the home.
Seems the kitty approved. I could have misread kitty's face though? Well done with the trailer. What type fasteners are you using on the sides of the tarp?
i love the top and was wondering if you can give me more info on how to do it. thanks
Nice design!
Nice video. How did you attach the wood to the metal frame? Just 1" wood screws through pre-drilled holes? Would painted plywood hold up very long?
Can you go back to 1:20....i missed what ya did there?
Like ur work bro.....I run a custom door shop I'll be posting more videos soon
What type of car is this? Looks pretty cool.

Great video! what is it you are attaching the tarp to on the sides? thanks!

Can you give me a complete supply list I need to do this with my trailer
@JackmanWorks
6 жыл бұрын
It took 2 sheet of OSB and I think 8, 8' long 2x4s. Then just a bunch of screws.
is it rain resistant?
@samermirdawi700
6 жыл бұрын
absolutely not, its OSB, will absorb water, bloat, expand, become brittle and fall apart....will look like an amateur know nothing DIY project. As mentioned above should have used pressure treated lumber (2x4 and 5/4"x6" deck boards

You’d need to put a water and weather resistant coating on your wood or either buy weather resistant treated wood.
This is exactly what I want to try with my trailer. What size is yours?
