Today is May 29 2022 and I am still going into the archives of Andertons/Chappers. I love this era of their careers. They have both went their separate ways and doing their own things, which is perfectly normal and expected. But I have so many good memories of this period. All the Christmas videos and stupid skits and challenges....makes memory lane a pleasant walk.

Can't you do like a "Sound like...For under 1000£" challenge? Say that you and Captain have a budget of 1000£ each to put a rig together with the best and most authentic (say) EVH or AC/DC sound. That would be awesome! I know my english is too bad but I'm from Sweden so...xD
@jackkingers
10 жыл бұрын
How about seeing whether its the guitar or amp that's vital? One has a small budget for a guitar (like less than 2 or 3 hundred) and like a grand for the amp, and then the other does vise versa. Obviously need to aim for a similar sound to compare, and things like volume shouldnt matter :)

Really good. Lee can play very well, but has to pretend that he's a duffer, when doing his RutBuster stuff with Justin!
I'd love to see another one of these but with Captain making a shred guitar and Rob making a blues one... then when they play them they have to switch off and play each others.
Rob: "I'm actually more of a blues player" Goes on shredding all over everything including a blues jam.
@JohannesWiberg
4 жыл бұрын
@Unfiltered Truth Shredding is about playing fast - not necessarily unmusical, that's your value judgment. Is Rob "musical in his approach"? I do hope so... although that is a very strange way of putting it. A strange musician indeed who wouldn't consider him/herself "musical in his/her approach". Hearing Rob noodle is clearly not the same as hearing his recordings or live concert. But he clearly does a lot of shred passages in these videos. It might be a kind of shred that is more to your liking, than, say, Yngwie or Satch or Batio or whoever, but it's clearly shredding.
@somethingbl
4 жыл бұрын
@@JohannesWiberg Who says you can't shred the blues? Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Richie Blackmore, Gary Moore...
@JohannesWiberg
4 жыл бұрын
@@somethingbl shredding usually doesn't follow common blues scales. If you play blues song and you start to shred while not using a blues scale, then you're not playing the blues but rather some sort of crossover genre. Nothing wrong with that. But Rob's quick shred runs aren't blues.
@somethingbl
4 жыл бұрын
@@JohannesWiberg You're just trying to put rules on everything, and music doesn't work that way. Bonamassa shreds all the time with blues scales. Rob shreds with other scales/modes over blues chords. Who cares, let people play their style.
@JohannesWiberg
4 жыл бұрын
@@somethingbl What are you talking about? I'm completely fine with anyone playing anything. You can play metal or classical or whatever. But if you play metal and you say that you play classical, you won't make any sense. That was the point of my original comment. I didn't make any rules, but words do mean something. "Music doesn't work that way" is a nice sentiment but if scrutinized it doesn't really hold water - of course it has rules. Now, since it's aestetics, rules can often be broken leading to something new and great, but that doesn't mean that anything goes and words don't mean anything. Be open minded, sure, but not too much, or your brain will fall out. I wasn't trying to say that what Rob was playing was bad or wrong (I like his playing fine and it's way better than anything I can play) just that it was incongruous with his statement.
watching ur vids makes me want to be British.
that mid-boost tone is unbelievable.

Oh, God, please nooooooo!!!
Decided to rewatch this video after nearly a decade of owning higher end guitars and also owning lower end guitars and modding them and completely agree with the sentiment that it is difficult to get a guitar that doesn’t feel nice to feel nice. However, if you had a more open budget let’s say under £1000 and an extra few hundred for mods you can build a dream guitar if you have the right know how.
In this video Rob looks like a guy who owns many decorative Samurai swords

That Tele that Rob has at the end of the video is the 50s Baja Telecaster. It's an MIM Tele. Designed by one of Fenders Master builders. Almost a mashup of a list of dream specs that people have requested with the wonderful Telecaster. Includes 3 brass barrels, Soft V 50s maple neck, and not to mention a Twisted Tele Custom Shop Neck Pickup and a Broadcaster Custom Shop Bridge pickup. It was my first Tele. Blame Waylon Jennings for my love of the Almighty Tele. Also includes an S1 switch for out of phase sounds and a 4th position which acts as a higher output humbucker mode. Point being anyone looking for an absolute dream of a guitar for under 800 bucks should truly give that one a go.
@primeDecomposition

The Baja tele is KING on TGP, I've never heard ANYONE have a bad thing to say about it; it's pretty much THE consensus BEST value guitar on most gear forums. I'd get one myself, but I hate hate HATE poly finishes on Fender guitars.
@tylerrose2891
7 жыл бұрын
Admittedly I do wish that it had the satin finished neck that the newer Standards have, and I would've liked to see the truss rod adjustment screw at the headstock rather than in the neck cavity, however those are the only downsides I can think of. I'm still strictly a novice but when you have a guitar that you love to look at and hold and it sounds great, it just inspires you to pick it up and practice that much more.
That little blues Jam session you guys did there for a minute or two... makes me remember why I love music in the first place

Lee's tone with that strat is absolutely killer!
That red box guitar is not a Squier, its a *Squarer*
In summary: Chappers doesn’t really touch the wood, while Lee likes to wrap his entire hand around it, and likes to feel the wood touching his hands.
Rob I always sing your praises with comments of how you continually progress as a guitar player, I can tell you just keep practicing, But this time i'm gonna have to bring Lee Anderton up....Lee you are getting wayyyy better at playing its so easy to notice. you're just really looking comfortable on the guitar now, way to go! Gosh Capt. you really are a good guitarist. Really.
Ive been watching for years. And this is still one of my favorite videos.
I've seen this half a dozen times and I still get excited...
The guitar is about the wood and the fretboard/neck construction.... please people don't spend £300 quid on mods and put them in a shit guitar. Wait and buy a decent guitar you like and then mod it because the mods work like this, they make a crap guitar sound alright... they make a good guitar sound outstanding :)
@herbertcoyle1264

True and false. You can get plenty of dirt cheap guitars that have quality wood and construction fitted with horrible pot metal hardware or shoddy wiring. Picked one up as a factory second last week for £25 that's nothing but wood, finish and routed cavities. Couple weeks of spare time, some Ebay sniping for quality hardware and it's going to be well worth playing.
@ltacid

I have to agree with Herbert. There are a lot of cheap guitars that have quality woods and horrible electronics. It is just a matter of selecting what's good from the crowd. That classic vibe was great for modding.
@HenryhyphenS
10 жыл бұрын
Herbert Coyle I really don't think you will find the same "wood" in a £300 as you would in a £600 guitar and remember these guys are doing RETAIL prices. So imagine this you buy a 2nd hand 'American' Telecaster you could get one for around £600-700 in decent condition..... why on earth would you spend £300 in a shop and spend £300 modding that heap of crap.. when you could buy a 2nd hand guitar which is made of the best wood/fretboard they can and then save for extras? Sorry but buying a New guitar in the £300 category is a waste of time always buy 2nd hand if you are spending sub £300 because if it has been looked after or not used much you will end up with a £600 for 1/2 the price.
@gillenh2o
10 жыл бұрын
Henry S in a lot of cases your not necessarily paying for "quality" of wood as much as you are paying for the factory of origin, wage of factory employees etc.. American made products customers much more because be wage they are more expensive to manufacture, but a decent piece of alder is a decent piece of alder, I've seen blindfolded tests where the import vs American made version of amps and guitars could only be told with certainty when the eyes were used, quality isn't always dictated by price, lord knows I've played more than a few 2000 dollar disappointments in my day
@gillenh2o
10 жыл бұрын
Henry S but at the same time I will agree that given the choice of a new say squire and a used American Standard to mod, I'd mod the standard in most cases
I would take a crusty old modded guitar over a shiny new expensive one any day. My prized possession is a hot pink Squire Strat w/ a generic replacement neck, some Seymour Duncan pickups (I can't remember which ones...they're single-coil-sized humbuckers) + whatever original humbucker was in it. Floyd Rose floating bridge+locking nut. Once I got it set up properly, it sounds, looks and plays like no other new guitar I've ever tried.

I wish I could like this a thousand times
I've turned a few cheap strat copies into guitars that easily rival USA made strats for several hundred dollars less. Some new pups, pots and fret level/ dress makes a huge difference. Of course, the tools, time and skill involved all add up. I have fun fixing, modding and flipping guitars so it's worth it to me. So many prima donna, purist guitarists limit their tone and guitar choices to such a limited pallet and name on a headstock.

Can't say that I disagree. I've seen Partscasters & Custom-handmade guitars by local luthiers, with a much better construction & QC, than wahtever the mainstream companies, put onto the shelves. It really shows how much the guitar industry us starting to fall into decline, due to oversaturation musical instruments, on the market.

I love these challenges! I think Rob's guitar got this one for me. I'm only saying this because it sounds like something I would enjoy playing more compared to Lee's guitar. They're both great mods, but Rob's has a brighter sound and it just feels more alive with a little bit of distortion. I absolutely loved the video.

First, your name has to be David gilmour, second, you have to chop his hands off and hand swap, and third, you need to steal his brain. Then, you will be on your road to sounding nothing like gilmour.
Geezus, it’s quite an eye shock seeing Rob with this hair after seeing so many videos of him with normal hair 😳

That’s funny. Short hair Rob has always looked weird to me because I saw him with the dreads for so long

i think he got him to complete the rock star look when he was doing his 'Dorje'(?) band touring and stuff. i'm mostly down with dreads and Rob for the most part pulled off the look well. but i think he knew when it was time to move on. another kid on the way, moving, the band not touring much if at all, all things come to an end.
Cant believe that this was 7 years ago. I remember this being released, haveing already been watching them for some time...
Rob/Lee - I've been binge watching your videos over the last few weeks (love your channel - tons of useful info). I love this video. Rob, I love the sound of your LTD! Lee, same on your strat - didn't realize how much better it sounded until you pulled out the standard one. Again, great video! Thanks for a great channel!
Too this day I still want to know what brand Lee whispers to Rob
13:01 what would you call the quarter pounder pickup in France? ;)

I've seen it, just many many moons ago
I just love it when a vid answers questions I didn't even know enough to have!
These are my absolute favorite videos, please do a lot more and make a playlist pretty please
Yamaha EG012. £147 from lidls WITH AN AMP! And it's alright. Needs, (not desperately) better tuning heads, tone pot, whammy and five way selector. The pickups, especially the humbucker, are good. The body is a bloody heavy lump of Alder. The neck just needs setting up and frets sanding as there is one slight buzz on the D string at 12th fret.
Drummer here, I hit things with sticks. But I love your videos.
Nice work guys. This is one of my favorite videos that you've done.
Dawg , they both are awesome, each unique and individual character, but just awesome! Both evolved from great taste and equals super cool guitars! Well Done!
I think for 600 pounds you could build a very custom guitar from Warmoth. 107.65 BPS for standard strat or tele body, alder or swamp ash. Poplar and basswood for less. 111.98 BPS for a maple strat neck, maple or rosewood fret board, with corian nut. That comes to 219.63 BPS. No finish, but you have to prioritize. That leaves 380.37 for tuners, bridge, controls, pick guard, strap buttons, and pickups. It could easily go over budget. However, it could also be totally worth it and something you could never get from a production line and cheaper than a luthier produced instrument. Reverse headstock, various neck contours, fret sizes, tuner hole sizes, bridge routes, and pick up routes at no extra charge. Pau Ferro fret board for an extra 6.15 BPs. Floyd Rose route for and extra 6.15 BPS. Full scalloping for 67.67 BPS. And, yes, please do the home tone vs. pro tone video.

benbutterworth Ah, how much is that? Is there something like Warmoth in England?

It can often be 20% or more. Same as sales tax. Add on the shipping, it hurts.

I figure it's coming, and it's something every musician should know before moving from "home playing" to "live in a band playing" +1000 for making a "home tone v pro tone vid" Rob + Lee
Great job and you are both great , Rob your a great teacher . Thanks
Thoroughly enjoyed this challenge.
"You have a woman's strings, my lord." Was that a Blackadder reference?
I would have liked to hear the cheap guitars pre mod
you guys really need to do another one of this amazing chalange!
Very much enjoy your take on amps, tubes (valves) and generally everything guitar. Very entertaining. You guys have inspired me to try my own mod. Thanks from Pasadena, Calif. USA
