This annoying retail customer story from reddit brought me back to when I worked in retail. I thought it was a good story to share and animate over and add my own reaction and commentary. This is a first when it comes to animating someone else's story but I thought it was a good story of an annoying customer. I hope you like it! and I hope you have a great day filled with no annoying customers :)

Nah, dude wanted a reason to throw a tantrum to get booted out of a place and justify his anger about the menu as "that place is full of mean people who refuse to help me" "tell me what will make you happy and i'll do it" was not even on his list of possibilities for the day. Why do old people work so hard at being angry??? They'd be so much happier if they took a deep breath and ACCEPTED THE HELP THEY KEEP ASKING FOR. 🤷‍♂

@@OriginalCreatorSama "Why do old people work so hard at being angry??? They'd be so much happier if they took a deep breath and ACCEPTED THE HELP THEY KEEP ASKING FOR." Actually I might be able to help answer that; I'm a nursing assistant whose job extensively involves helping elderly individuals. TL;DR: old people are in a constant state of change due to the aging process and that can be scary; when humans are put into states of fear, they can act unpredictably/illogically. Consider this: you've lived your whole life doing whatever it is you liked doing. Maybe you used to be an extremely skilled woodworker, maybe you enjoyed going on hikes every other day on various trails, or perhaps you were an extensive writer/reader who enjoys books. And now, as the years have now caught up to you, you start to feel, actually feel, yourself changing. Your reflexes have slowed, your joints have begun to stiffen, even your mind has begun to slow and maybe become addled. This WILL be terrifying to the unprepared. And, unfortunately, many people go their whole lives without preparation. Their peers are, for the most part, the same age as them, so their concept of dying from age doesn't impact them until, lo and behold, they are now 65 and at least a third of their friends are gone from not even age, but from other health-related complications. Those that do make it, it just becomes a countdown for when whoever body's fails. It might be you who's next, it might be your friends; all the while you can feel yourself losing more and more of your faculties, bit by bit. Which brings us back to this particular individual that @IceCreamSandwich . I'd first like to mention, I don't at all feel like the customer was justified, they were a right ol' asshat that was making their problems the problems of others. HOWEVER - we must consider the POV of this individual. Again they're losing the bits and pieces of themselves they once were, and are still coming to terms with their new condition, maybe aren't even ready for it. All the while they're still pushing themselves to be like their old selves, even as their brains aren't fully there. So, whereas we see a grouchy old man being quite unfairly an asshat to an undeserving employee and business owner, in his position he's doing his best to remain independent, to remain "himself". The concept of self is very precious to us, and when we start losing that we are put into a world of fear and darkness that would make even the most stoic crumple. The store owner did the right thing by simply asking "what is it that would make you happy?". He's being direct with the individual, recognizing there's a communication issue, and is trying to bring an understanding between the two; even though the customer, at this point, was in too heightened of an emotional state to properly process things, the store owner at least was trying to connect with a potentially lonely, frightened man who is simply trying to maintain his grasp on the world around him as he once knew, rather than trying to come to terms with his existence as it is now. Again, the customer is not at all excused for his actions. But hopefully my explanation shed some light on WHY he acted like this.

Unfortunately there's a lot of people like that. Sometimes I feel like people like that never had any interest in the food in the first place. @@dubiousinformation1756 Anger is addictive. Twitter and lots of other forms of social media, protest, outrage, cancel culture, people usually don't want solutions, they just want to be mad and they want an easy target to direct being mad at. It's culturally acceptable to be cantankerous and hostile. Anger is a useful emotion, but it needs a purpose that can be resolved to keep us or others safe or it quickly becomes an addiction as well as toxic. I feel sorry to that old guy if that was his motive and he's just a bitter person who wants to spread the misery. At the same time, it needs to not be tolerated, because even if it's sad, people like that are out to hurt others, even if it's just to ruin their day because misery loves company. It's not cool I wish more people would stand up to it. Maybe bitter angry people would realize how miserable they actually are if people didn't just stand their awkwardly or bow to their whim.

its literally how many people get freebies. they know that if they complain, most places allow customer service to compensate to some degree. at some point you know the company you work for is being suckered, but you say nothing. Well, I am an owner that doesn't put up with it. If you used the product, and there is nothing wrong with it, you cannot have a refund. Its why the girl that make slime with mixins and glitter and shiz no longer does refunds. Its why even walmart has stopped a lot of that and requires id.

@@who-why-what I thought the same thing, but after working at a gift and delicacy shop (in Germany) as a parttimer while studying for almost a year now, I've realized that it highly depends on what kind of store you work in and thus what kid of people you'll be mostly seeing. I'm really sensitive to other people's emotions so I was kinda scared working there at first, but up to now I've only had like 3 or 4 actual bad encounters with customers. Of course there were some weird people or tight lipped ones, but mostly they were glad to have someone help them with finding a gift and wrap it up nicely or being able to taste some of our stuff before deciding to buy it :D Christmas is of course stressful as heck, but I think that's in every store the case ^^

All depends on the management. I've had times when I've given the rude customer what they want because, despite upholding policy, I know if a manager comes down they'll overwrite me and tell me off for wasting their time when I could have handled it myself. Might as well save time and a tongue lashing at that point

That is what I tell my customer service. I tell them that they do not have to put up with a single bs thing out of a single customer. They can hang up, walk away, refuse to answer, block them from the page, etc. Given the choice, they often just deal with the person the way that person needs to be dealt with. They are in that unique situation and have common sense and know what needs to be said and done. My customers allow me to continue to do business, but I am responsible for the experience my employees have. I cannot let people just abuse them.

I'm curious to know how to make things better :/ I was waiting in line and there was a mother ahead of me. I had like, 10 things in my cart. The mother ahead of me had her whole entire cart full of lots of stuff, but the cashier was almost done. He stalled and stalled for at least 10 minutes, wasting the mother's time until another cashier took over. (She blasted through all of the mother's stuff and then my stuff and I was out in under 2 minutes i swear lmao she was a champ.) By this time, three other people were waiting behind me. I had him before a few months prior. Like I normally do, I said nothing while I put my stuff on the conveyor belt, hurried through the checkout process and hoped I wasn't bothering anyone. The cashier trash talked the magazine I bought. It was really obvious he didn't want to deal with me in both instances. I 100% get that a cashier's job is HORRIBLE and EXHAUSTING. One time this other cashier accidentally dropped something while he was rushing through my stuff and he asked if I wanted to replace it but I said "no that's okay, that's fine." I literally don't do or say anything and I don't really care the state of my items, just as long as I get out of checkout alive with all my stuff because checkout causes me anxiety. Juggle my items for all I care and kick-box me out of the line, I just want it done and over with and I want to get out of the way as soon as I can, just like the cashier does. What did I do that was so offensive and wrong to this man? What do I need to do to make sure I don't piss off another cashier where they hold up a line by stalling? Sometimes I wish I could say sorry to this man that I exist and that I'm sorry that I have to eat. We're all struggling to get through life and If I didn't have to, I would never go to the store or bother cashiers ever again.

Can't remember the dogs name but it looked like a border collie but all white and was the sweetest most well behaved dog I've ever seen. She followed him without a leash and whenever he'd come to checkout he'd tell her to say hi and she'd either stand up at the counter or walk around to our side of the till so we could greet her. After this incident he sat me down and told me "the next time someone complains about how things are done here tell them the owner has an asking price for the store and if you want to pay it, you can make the decisions". I have a customer service story that still makes me laugh till this day: I used to work at a chicken place in my city. It was very popular and is always busy later in the evenings. It was Sunday, early evening, before dinner rush and a family came in with their two screaming children. At this point I went to lunch before dinner rush so my coworkers had to deal with them. When I came back I had no clue what was going on but these two little kids were coming up to the counter bawking at us like chickens. My coworkers and I ignored it, previously I guess, the children tried to get some stickers that the restaurant gives out to little kids. But the husband said that his children weren't allowed to have them. The children have been running around, screaming, crying, bawking, and throwing our straws on the ground because they weren't allowed to have the stickers. Eventually the husband gave in and tried to give them the stickers. My boss was already annoyed at the children so he told me not to give it to them. I tell the customer, " I am sorry, but I am not allowed to give you the stickers". The husband gets annoyed at me and tries to bribe me $20 to give him the stickers. I tell him he will have to speak to my manager. My manager comes out and tells him "he is not allowed to have the stickers." The wife has come up at this point and the husband starts raising his voice. My manager then says, "That he is sorry that he can't parent his children and that he is not going to award them for this type of behavior." In shock I hand them their food and they walk back to their table. We giggle and say "Nice job" to the manager. Then the husband comes back with the food 5 minutes later and shoves it over the counter and spilling it everywhere. The husband then says that he wants to speak to the manager and wants his name & owners number. My manager comes out and says yeah I'll go get it. He pivots in a circle and says "Hi I am the regional manager of this store and the owner what can I do for you?" The husband freaks out and complains about how disrespectful he is and how he will never come back there again. My manager says then ends it with "Okay have a nice day and don't come back". The family then dragged their screaming children out the door and I never saw them after that. Just to give context, my manager was one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He is so funny, kind, and overall a good guy. So when he did this and talked this way, my jaw dropped. After this incident, my boss door dashed us Starbucks just because of the sass we witnessed that day. This is definitely a core memory for me.

If we had societal standards for how children should behave in public (like we used to), and reinforced them where appropriate (like we used to), our society at large probably wouldn't be the steaming pile of $#!+ it is now. Kudos to your manager! Wish more would do this and not accept that kind of behavior in their establishments. Servers do reserve the right to refuse service.

This is exactly the right way to deal with this. Do not give in to unreasonable demands and do not reward people (especially children) for misbehaving. Your manager is a lot better than me, by the way, I would have ordered them to leave the moment they came in with screaming kids. I am not going to allow your crotch goblins to cause a disturbance in my restaurant just becuse you can't parent them.

@@HickoryDickory86 like we used to? Lol. Bad parents always existed. I remember being a kid in the '90s and still seeing parents letting their kids run around. And instead of the parents seeing anything wrong with their parenting, they blamed TV and video games. Before then, it was common for rich people to not even spend time with their kids and just hire nannies to raise them for them. Unless you're implying we should go back to beating children, to which I say, that says a lot more about you than it does about society. There are numerous psychological studies that show the negative effects of beating children. We've moved on from that and made it illegal for a reason.

4:34 That's how my boss is. We've had a few bad customers now and again, but luckily we don't get that many of them. He usually will say, "Well what can I do to remedy the situation?" Sometimes it's a refund, othertimes it's just redirection. It's worked in most situations I've seen. One time we had a customer that was wanting to buy something from us (they were a first-time customer). She yelled at ME because I asked her for the recipient's phone number, but she thought I was asking for the address again. I wasn't. Let her tire herself out and then asked for the phone number. Eventually we got to the item she wanted delivered.... She was so condescending the entire time. (But apparently being condescending was ok because she had owned a shop like ours before. Whatever.) My boss just told her that it's clear that things aren't going to work and gave the phone number to the other shop on town. Customer started backpedaling and my boss was like, "No, you insulted my employee and disrespected me. Have a good day." And hung up.
