A quick explanation for those that aren't aware just to help some of the head scratching. He explains the timing chain and interference motors amazingly, yes, this is very much an interference motor, as most modern vehicles are. Interference engines have valves that go down below where the pistons would rise to in the compression or exhaust phases, however, they drop down in between phases in order to suck in air and push out exhaust. The reason they're so close together and thus interference engines is for the exact reasons someone buying one would want. It simply gets better compression with a tighter squeeze without sacrificing valve depth and thus less intake and exhaust. So more intake, more exhaust, and better combustion at the expense of being super reliant on timing. You want these benefits because that means you get more power, better fuel mileage, and cleaner burns for emissions that protect your catalytic converters to avoid expensive repairs. Unfortunately, with as long as it ran (until locking up) after the timing chain failure, that motor is for sure toast, as even idle rpm sees the crankshaft spin roughly 600 revolutions per minute, which means the valves were hitting within a second. That undoubtedly means the engine is toast and probably lost compression on most, if not all cylinders. No compression, no combustion. Engine replacement would be cheaper at that rate as parts and labor would exceed the cost of a motor and labor or replacing it. That is also what a blown engine usually entales when told to you by a shop (assuming they did their due diligence), just as an insurance company totalling out a vehicle that may still run and look perfectly fine (for instance, hail damage on a unibody car can total a vehicle because the repair to all the damage would far exceed the car's value, despite being hardly noticeable and the vehicle running perfectly fine). Hope this clears up the air on any unaswered questions and I hope this lady comes upon better times, she seemed very nice.

Interference engines suck. My little beep beep broke it's timing belt when the wife was going to work. By her description it was tick, tick, clack, nothing. Glide to a stop. I thought cool. Towed her home, took off the valve and timing covers. Yep, she snapped the belt. Went to turn the crank and couldn't go forward but started to go backward. Asked a couple more questions and got the truth. Wifey tried to start it after it stopped. The week old 640 CCA battery spun hard enough to push through valve contact. Popped my bore scope in and presto... I was infore some backyard surgery. People please. If you have a sudden & total shutdown. DO NOT touch that key again with interference engines. Tell any and every driver this. Saves you brain and pocket pain.

Most people know nothing about cars so when you’re using different vehicle terminology to explain it, you’re kind of doing it like you’re talking to another mechanic rather than someone that doesn’t know what 90% of these parts are or how they work. I do the same thing tho and have to catch myself, I’m a software dev and it’s easy for me to talk about it cause it’s all common knowledge forgetting that people who might be asking will know nothing about what I do except in a very general sense.
