I bought one of these back around the late 1980s, and yes the tube was shot. I was also perplexed by the strange high voltage connector on the tube neck, I have never seen that on any other TV.

One of my KZread heros! Yes. It’s a weird setup. I can’t say I’ve seen it on another Sony product. I can’t remember as it’s been years since I properly looked at the service manual. From memory, it’s supposed to give better convergence and geometry! These CRTs are fantastic, for about 5 minutes (ok maybe I’m exaggerating), but apparently they were the only unreliable tubes Sony made. Perhaps all of the early 13 inch tubes were built with some design fault.

I used to make some cable windings on the flyback ferrite for a heater with a special voltage.

Yes, that’s another way to do it. Runs off the line pulses. Replacing the small original heater transformer is likely the best option though, in this case. Original to the circuits description. No use putting the complicated line stage under strain

I have the exact same TV. Tube is bright but a wave of distortion slowly runs down the left side of picture . Any tips would be very welcome . I love the set and would love to have it working perfectly .
