CUSTOMER OVERHEATED THIS CORSA - NOW WANTS ME TO PAY

Hi Guys in this video we take a look around the pitch since my last update video where we were very short on the ground with stock. Lets see if things have improved plus some story time about a recent warranty claim which has sent me into a rant 😁

I just couldn't deal with the general public, there are so many people who just won't take responsibility for their actions and think somebody else will sort them out. I genuinely believe people are becoming more stupid which is odd given how we supposedly live in the information age.

The customer is an absolute trumpet and had the engine been toast, should be made to pay in full for their utterly bizarre behaviour. Whatever garage they end up working for, nobody should even put their wheeliebin in for a tyre change! I guess in reality though, as a goodwill gesture only to protect my reputation, I'd have offered some kind of split in the cost, say 50/50 or thereabouts.

Had a tertiary belt go on me a few years ago on the M1 (at the time I had no idea what it was). Dash lit up like a Christmas tree🎄. First thing I noticed was the loss of power steering, then lights started to dip. I pulled off at first junction and let things cool down for an hour, as noticed temp was rising. I had already called for recovery. Anyone that drives a car in this condition for more than a few miles knows they are gambling, as they know something serious has occurred. It’s a bit like watching people drive through flooded fords etc, they know it’s a dumb idea, but they still do it (Ego problems I’m thinking)..BUT…no one else should foot the bill for their mistakes, other than themselves..it’s the only way these type of folk will learn! Problem is today, most people want to blame someone else for their own stupidity.

Just make sure that your warranty and sales documents say that if warning comes up and you continue to use the vehicle (that means stopping as soon as possible and safe to do so) without contacting us first that they could invalidate the claim and be liable for repairs caused by continuing to use the vehicle.

I feel for you Lee.. But the root cause was the timing chain seal.. Yes he's been crazy driving it and if he'd been scrupulous he could have played dumb and said it happened yards away from home when the lights came on and thought it would be safe to drive it home.. It's a mine field in the car selling business.. But pleased it had a positive outcome for all concerned.. Brilliant videos as well Lee.

Trader mate of mine went to court over a similar thing, customer had water pump leak on a zafira while on holiday in Devon. Took it to a local garage which diagnosed the problem but she decided to drive it 150 miles home and cooked it up on the way. AA delivered it back and my mate said similar to you that it shouldn't have been driven and its her fault. She went to court and they decided shes not to know that it shouldn't be driven so not her fault and as still in warranty he had to give her money back and pay costs.

Got warned about electric handbrake failures, window failures, other electric maladies but in just over 5 years with the two I had one blown bulb - that was it. Decent tough old cars in my view

I think a fair way given the seal leak, it would of been good to have a bit of both, especially as they then created a bigger problem, the weighting of that is then tricky. But I think goodwill, good name is sometimes far more valuable then not giving some level of recompense. Great vid as always.

The warranty repair seemed like a hard one, I understand that the customer could of potentially boiled the engine but due to the seal failing I'd say it would be more of a repeat repair been as you had the timing chain changed along with that seal, at the end of the day at least you solved it with minimal damage. Plus going forward you've got more chance of that particular customer coming back for more vehicles or even referring friends and family 😃

Lee, I think you are quite right in respect of changing the oil seal and the belt. Perhaps the customer acted in a less than perfect manner, however, the fault does come back to that original faulty seal, causing the problem in the first place. God knows what the customer was doing but he was young and perhaps, will learn from this but I would not count on it. Put it behind you and keep up the good work. there's a lot more customers out there.

When the dash board red light comes on, I have nearly shit myself. I always pull over, call my breakdown and get the vehicle looked at. I have had two cars now, with overheating problems, fixed and sorted numerous of times. One which I did purchase from a still operating car sales. The vehicle was still under 3 month warranty. When I mentioned this to the garage regarding the red light, they said it was not covered under warranty. This was the same car. The same car which later had an exhaust problem with. Britannia found the car had been repaired previously and had a rag wrapped around the exhaust pipe. I had paid for a new cylinder to be replaced on an Automatic car! The car was sold to me with a full year MOT and 3 Month warranty. It is so refreshing to know, that there are still reputable sales out there Lee!!

i recently bought a corsa from 2008, i had the same problem ! the belt snapped and luckily i was fairly close to home (no more then half a mile) i knew it wasnt going to be good to drive with no belt so was carful not to over heat by limping it back at under 20 mph till i got it home, called for a local parts shop to deliver a new belt to me which they did the next day, by which time i did what i needed to do in terms of removing bits to access the tensioner so i could replace it, this happened the same day this video was uploaded !!!! safe to say the belt is now on and car running fine, just have a mysterious battery light on (solid doesnt flash) which indicates bad alternator or batter but tested both and both are fine ! ? will get a replacement batter and see if that fixes that lol

Li regarding the Corsa, we live in an era where the onus is put on the vendor regardless of circumstance. this has as much to do with a competitive culture of other vendors giving it all away to gain a competitive advantage via social media positive reviews (risking putting others out of business hopefully before they do) and a consumer thinking of 'its under warranty - not my problem mate' irrespective of what the law may say; try and prove neglect. I guess this is why those insurance warranties were invented, its the perfect side-step.

Since there was already a fault or failure, it would be difficult to prove. The best-case scenario would have been to split the bill. I doubt you would win that case in a legal dispute.

Tricky one. On the one hand, the customer is an absolute weapon for continuing to drive it. On the other hand, a court of law would be asking questions as to why the car was sold with a leaking seal, which ultimately caused the belt to fail, whether you knew about the leak or not. If it had come to the worst, a 50/50 repair bill split would've been fair IMHO.

This is really interesting to see. as I’m the unlucky one in my case ( CORSA 2011 SE ) purchased from a private seller 1st car they plugged the thermostat ( taken it out ) and left the housing installed. to hide overheating issues they’ve had done 1500 miles in it unknowingly driving a car that isn’t getting up to temp as my corsa doesn’t have a temp gauge. anyway car eventually went into limp mode fan spinning full RPM and car with spanner light on plugged in OBD2 and got thermostat stuck open code that’s when I discovered no thermostat anyway as soon as new thermostat is in car is found very heating suspected head gasket by the looks having to get engine rebuilt

No way would I of paid for an engine, anyone with any sense would not have driven the car , lucky escape there Lee , that could have been a nightmare.

It's a difficult one as the cause initially was the leaking seal which you had replaced, having said that there is no excuse for him driving on once he knew that something had gone wrong. Unfortunately you are dealing with the general public and, well, any thing could happen. He didn't happen to have a suitcase wth him.

Hate it when you get a dodgy part, don't use that same oil gasket brand again & do tell the parts store about that issue, hopefully they pass on the info.

Because the whole scenario was caused by the leaking seal I think I would reluctantly have put it down to a bit of bad luck and taken the hit fixing it whatever the damage . Had there been just a snapped belt and considering their neglect driving it when very unwise , I'd have held them at least 50% responsible for costs had it come to new head gasket /engine etc ... Just my opinion because you asked .. I think you do a great Job and would happily buy a car from you . I hope I don't get boiled in engine oil by your followers for this 🤕

Think the customer isn't as savvy as they think they are and this should be a lesson for them. If the engine had gone "head cracked, cylinder head gasket gone and needed skimming, valves reseating etc" then they are liable and you would be right in pointing it out. I cannot express how lucky that people have access to a dealer like yourself because in my 50 years of owning cars you are one of few I would by a car from.

pay for a new water pump fitment & breakdown fees if there were any. Any damage caused by ignoring the water temperature gauge & the warning lights is down to them.

Interesting, the customer was lucky the cyclinder head wasn't warped. However, if the engine had blown it may of been an issue of discussing who pays. The customer could argue the problem stemed from the oil seal. It is a difficult one especially with consumer rights today, if they had paid part credit card then the customer would have the card company refund them and then you repaying the card company. Also, you need to be favourable with social media. Negative comments can do damage. You did well to look after the customer and explain the situation. As for if you needed to replace the engine I would have explained that the severe damage has been caused by driving the vehicle, I would have suggested as a good will gesture an offer of 50/50 on costs for replacing the engine this would give damage limitation and a positive outcome on social media.

For something like crank seals, I only buy and fit genuine items. Saving a couple quid on factor rubbish isn't worth the potential headache in my opinion.

Hi Lee, unless one has dealt with the general public, one would not believe how dumb and rude they can be. If a tyre loses all its air, one should fix the puncture, or replace the tyre, not carry on driving til the hub melts and the road wears throught the floor lol. What a plonker, I bet the customer was a younger person...says it all, OH well its under warranty, so its not my problem. Tough luck matey, I would pay the new belt fix and fitting, then bill the plonker for the rest, you cant help stupid. So you should not be paying for moronic behavior. Love the channel Lee, good honest treder, good luck Sir.😁

Trouble is, unless you had all of that in writing from the customer then it’s your word against his, and the law, rightly or wrongly, sides with the customer, particularly in the 0-6 month period after the sale…

No temperature gauge on corsas, hence so many cooked engines.Would have been a 50/50 compromise on further costs.

It’s remarkable to my eyes how modern those cars running up towards 20 years old still look, such as that Suzuki Swift. I’d have one! Also, with the ever increasing nonsense from those who like to interfere with our lives, I’m really liking stuff from the analogue age. I do not need to Bluetooth my phone to my car. It’s all crap being broadcast & what’s wrong with a CD player?
