Custom Tube Fenders (Jeep Cherokee XJ)

In this video I build some custom front tube fenders for my jeep cherokee the trail plug. I used 10 gauge steel and 1 inch pipe to complete this awesome DIY project.

    Hey Rob, Those fenders turned out really nice. You're right, the front edge tapering wider to the rear looks great. That's one of the reasons I dont care for the big name flat flares. Too wide at the front edges. I'd buy yours! Rock on, bro.

    Hmmmm… Very rough looking, but also, very utilitarian. Annnnnnd, you made them yourself. Personally I might have welded it from underneath as well and then cleaned up the top welds a bit more, but I like what you did here. Home built and functional, Love it!

    Little late not but instead of a bracket you could’ve cut it all the way to the fender line then cut another piece about the 20% longer in width beveled the one Edge... oh wait you’re now getting to the point there you’re gonna do the same thing but bolted only.. I would’ve made a wider piece bent it a little then welded it to the bottom of the arch area and bolted it through the top. In a way creating a v or y sandwiching the fender while being welded to the new fender at the bottom and bolted at the top. Nate clearly helped you to use that bender cause those bends look ALOT better then the ones on the rear fenders.. Needed one more support piece right at that front bend, but your fabrication skills are way way better then they were when you did the rears lol Little tip for your next build.. use your highlift when bending.. attached a wider board to it but you can use it to draw the metal down at that height to the frame and while a longer piece of say a 2x would keep from having those wired bend lines like you had in the rear. Also no hammer marks lol. Those did turn out really well though by comparison.

    I always thought the point of tube fenders was to tie the ends of the tube into something structural. It seems like if the only significant mounting point is the center these may not handle abuse, but then again if you don't drive you XJ like a buggy it's probably fine and you'd probably break other stuff if you were treating it rough enough to break these.

  • @MuddyBeards4X4

    @MuddyBeards4X4

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes that's probably true. But these are for sure stronger then any aftermarket companies tube fenders because I at least made that center bracket for extra support. If I was making a full exo cage then yes i would tie them into the structure of the cage. But alas I do not have a cage as of now

    Looks Really Good! However, I cringe each time I see guys using a angle grinder/cutoff wheel without a guard on it ( as i type this my left index and 2nd fingers have about 60% feeling and dexterity from accidentally letting my grinder/cutoff wheel kickback into my hand several years ago while working on a fabrication project for my jeep, it cut through my leather glove, down to the bone at the 2nd joint on each finger ) #leavetheGuardsONguys :) On another Note: I would have made the fender panel Longer on the Frontend to include coverage for the side of the' header panel' around the sidemarker light/lenses, to provide a "guard" against busting the front corner on a rock or tree. Overall Looks Great, keep up the good work!

    I came up with a solution for this, on all of my small angle grinders, I have like 6, that way I dont hafta keep switching the grinding disk to the cut off wheel to the flap wheel to the wire wheel, etc., but anyway I take each guard off and cut them with my chop saw, I cut them down where they are still wide enough to work but not full width to get in my way for grinding and cutting, so I still leave about 3 inches of guard which is all I need, just thought yall could use this tip??

    He needs to work metal. He’s already cutting steel fine, just lacking forming skills and structural vision. Not trying to be mean or a jackwagon but curves in steel aren’t that difficult, and you could manipulate the sheet over the tubes with a body hammer and not have to slot it; saves time and wicked stronger at the edge. (a tube roller isn’t much more than this pipe bender but it sure would do a better job with a whole lot less work. And no pie cuts. Unless he meant birdsmouth cuts on the webs)
