In this video I make a pair of oak bedside tables, from rough lumber to finished product. The process includes beautiful bow tie inlays to stabilize some cracks in the wood, and hand rubbed Danish oil finish.

I make my living as a Machinist so woodworking is the art I wished I would have mastered. I consider woodworkers like machinists, same precision different material. I subscribed because of the music and the cool furniture.

Do you not anticipate seasonal movement creating a problem with the cross grain runners? Here in Southern California wood never moves but I still feel compelled to make allowances in my construction technique.
@alpinewoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Hey Bruce! This has been mentioned before, I’m not worried with these dimensions but time will tell
That is very nice project! I am impressed you did mitered drawers - most folks just do butt joint. One suggestion and a pet peeve of my - the drawer should be much deeper so you could put a box of tissues and more stuff. I don't get the point of super shallow drawers - I know it is "standard" but not very practical.
@alpinewoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Hey Me, thank you for commenting. I don’t really understand the aversion people have to miters, I’d recommend seeing four eyes’ video on their strength. On the depth of the drawer, it may be a perspective thing but these are well deep enough for a box of tissues (or 2). You gotta realize that the depth of the drawer must respect the proportions of the overall design as well. Have you seen our 2nd video already?

Hi!
It’s a very nice design and beautiful video, but don’t you need to be concerned about pegging and gluing the drawer runners across the grain of table sides? The sides won’t be able expand and contract seasonally, so won’t something have to give?
@alpinewoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Not in this size, but it’s an improvement to be made in future iterations

Yeah we’re currently designing and prototyping a bigger overhead one
Just wondering if you are not worried about expansion and contraction given you glued the drawer runner across the grain?
@petet4159
Жыл бұрын
Same with the drawer bottom. Humidity in my region goes from 50 in winter to 75 in summer. Wood needs to be able to expand and contract with changes in humidity or the wood will crack
@alpinewoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Hey Pete. Drawer bottom has space in the grooves (and isn’t glued on the long side). For the runners that’s a fair point but I’m not worried in this size. Thanks for commenting!

@@JannisJG A little humor in one's life is good. Keep up the good work and be safe..... And, the OSHA remark was referring to lifting those planks with a rope to an improper landing with no safety devices or means. Here in the USA, we'd have to use an approved wire rope and lifting device, and have a different means of getting it inside the building once up to the correctly protected floor and landing...
Love this video. I do have a question regardin the sliding table saw usage. I noticed you are ripped on the right side of the blade. Is your sliding table elevated from the cast iron? If not, does the small elevation cause issues? Thanks
@alpinewoodworks
Жыл бұрын
Hey Horacio, thank you for watching. The sliding portion is perfectly level with the rest of the saw so it doesn’t cause any issues at all. This is more a “European” style table saw

Thanks for the reply. I was always under the assumption that the slider is a couple thousands of an inch above the cast iron. At least this is how Felder suggested I setup my hammer k3

@@horacionochetto8454 this is indeed how you set up a slider (even though this is an SCM not a Felder). Also the way it is used in the video is not how one would actually use it. Of course it doesn't make sense do rip on the cast iron table. Rather, one would use the slider.

I enjoyed your Video. It is well made, good music (even though I prefer no music). But besides what people wrote regarding taking wood movement and whatnot into account... man, please take safety more serious. In minute 7, when you was on the jointer, there was no shield above the exposed blade, when your hand and your pullover only were a few cm away, right? And then it is actually also a no go to wear gloves on rotating machines like saws. Cheers, René

this has to be the most stupid and dangerous way to use a jointer and a sliding table saw! Why the hell did you: 1.) Also why would you use that tiny square to check a board that is like 10 times its size?
