I have used Decibullz for a few years now, and they work well enough, but I still put on the muffs on, over any type of ear inserts, especially at an indoor range.

My daughter was born with a hearing loss and where she has gotten her hearing aids said that they can make molds for her when she shoots. I also worked at an ENT office and the audiologist in the office would make molds for people too.

Coincidentally, I picked up a set of these moldable plugs. Live in NH. I had to order the extra-large inserts to increase the NRR. Works great on its own using pistols. But my clay/shotgun work still requires an electronic muff over these plugs. Low cost and works great! rock on!

I decided to try these out. It took two tries to get a good fit on the right ear; the fit on the left was perfect on the first attempt to mold the product. My impression - they do work - ambient sound is noticeably reduced provided the fit is snug. At both my indoor and outdoor ranges, I prefer to wear my Howard Leight Impact electronic muffs over the Decibulz to maximize protection. This combo works well for me and is comfortable. I can still hear conversations and RSO directions while wearing both.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Decibullz. Even though they are working for you, it really is best to wear earmuffs WITH the molded ear plugs. One layer is not enough. And since we cannot reverse hearing loss, it’s better to take your earrings out when you shoot than to live with tinnitus and/or the frustration of not being able to hear well or naturally.

They actually sell those at Sportsman's Warehouse if people prefer to buy them at a brick and mortar store instead of online. I'll probably end up getting a couple of sets of them to use because I hate the muffs in general, and to use with the muffs for louder stuff if need be.

Very helpful & informative video. I want to look into something like that I hate wearing the muffs, they give me a headache from driving my glasses into my head, so this may be a great alternative. Although typically I wear the foam plugs with the muffs because otherwise it is just too loud. So we'll see THANKS!!

Hearing protection not to be taken for granted. I did take it for granted when younger. After 20 yrs of quarterly shoots (plus some extra-curricular activity), I discovered suddenly one day that I had tinnitus. I was then informed by an ENT (a shooter, btw) that the hearing protection govt was issuing was second-rate, and needed to be double layered in any case. Oops. Remember young people (and I love you), the warranty (on your body) doesn't expire until age 40, so you can get away with a lot of abuse without symptoms while you're impervious to signs of mortality! The problem is that hearing abuse, like other forms of bodily abuse, can accumulate without warning until it pops. Then, as with me, without warning, I earned the right to hear crickets in my head 24 hrs a day for the rest of my life (since 2016). Once you have this condition I'm told you can look forward to this mess getting progressively worse til you check out. Accompanying tinnitus usually is some (or greater) high freq hearing LOSS to look forward to. Beware kiddos and younger folks: don't take irreplaceable hearing (and sanity) for granted. Go the extra mile or two to protect it. The reason that range masters might not tell you about all this (as mine did not) is that it makes it harder and, in their minds, possibly less safe on line with 25 people drawing, firing and moving together. And, hey, the second-rate muffs SEEMED to work! Wrongo.

Thanks for sharing. My question is, if full ear muffs are worn, it also cover the skin in front of your ear where I have heard sound can also enter your ear. In the case of ear plugs this area is left unprotected. It will be interesting to hear if ear plugs really protect your hearing 100%? Just love watching your channel. Keep them coming.

Couldn't get the right bavk in & had to re-melt it. The left is good. I thibk I was aggressive ^ over squished the right initially. Seems ok now but not sealed as well as I'd like. Better with the foam ends. DO NOT put the m in hot water with the foam tips!!!! Put those on AFTER shaping

The custom ear plugs are very popular with competitive shotgun shooters, and the vendors who make them frequently have booths set up at shotgun tournaments. Just do a search for a skeet, trap, or sporting clays tournament in your local area.

I got the high dollar ones, molded them as directed and they fit well. I wore them to the range and after one shot had to put my muffs on over them. I got more hearing protection from the disposable foam plugs. For me, they were a total waste of money.

If you would have used the smaller silicone tips and inserted the logo plug per instruction they would have formed deeper in your ear with better results. I have used them for two years now with the foam tips shooting trap and they work better than anything else I tried. I found that they are available at my local CVS, by the eye and ear drops but are only available in black.

Try the untrendy Flentz plain beige foam stopples. By the large bottles they are dirt cheap, reuseable or disposable. That's what has owned and kept the whole industrial market in the loudest places, like newspaper web presses. Lost a pair? No problem, fifty cents. No molding, no fitting. And their decibel ratings may not be any larger--but they cut more noise.

Questio.Do you put these in before going to the range? Not a supply of boiling water @ range. Legitimate question not trolling you btw 🙂

Just attempted to complete a purchase of Decibullz ear plugs using your discount code. The site says the code is invalid.

A quick perusal of hearing aid stores in my vicinity suggests that one of the services many of them offer is making custom ear protection molds specifically for shooting (as well as for musicians, swimmers, etc.). Not sure about the expense but it may be another option for people to explore. Thanks for always having good content!

Thank you for the video, however I must be honest, I am a bit skeptical. I would like a pair molded to my ears. I will stick to my earmuffs I use till then. Thanks Stav !

If you can find someone near you who does it, I'd definitely recommend it! With mine, he used a sort of syringe to squirt a goo into my ears which hardens and then he rounds all the edges and sends them to you in the mail.

@@SheEquipsHerself As a Board Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist I work with clients daily who need hearing protection. While self fit is not bad, a custom fit such as you had made for yourself usually provides the best NRR as well as comfort. A physical impression of the ear anatomy provides accuracy of fit which in turn provides accuracy of NRR. I have some clients who choose a custom earplug with interchangeable filters to adjust the amount of noise attenuation. (usually from 7db to 26db.) When selecting earplugs, the higher the NRR the better. Sensori-neural Hearing Loss from noise exposure is not reversible. I personally use a 26db NRR filter in my custom plugs as well as muffs when using an indoor range .

I am a huge fan of the SensGard hearing protectors (www.sensgard.com/). I have never been able to get the little foam disposables to work for me, and earmuff-style protectors press against my glasses and safety glasses and give me a headache. SensGards solve both issues. I have used them or years in the factory at work, mowing or vacuuming, and when using power tools in my home workshop. And now that I'm learning to shoot, I use them at both the indoor and outdoor ranges. They protect you from the percussive injury of gunfire, while allowing you to hear instructions from trainers or range safety officers. I recommend the NRR-31 for shooting. (I apologize if I sound like I'm trolling; I'm really not. I'm just a very satisfied customer.)
