Custom Metal Pickup Truck Half Rack
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
#JimbosGarage #Welding #MetalFabrication I have had the same Ford Ranger truck for the past 15 years and recently just upgraded to a new GMC Sierra. I made a custom metal half rack for my last truck and can't live without it.

I had a great time on this build. Its easy to do and I highly recommend this project for people who often haul anything in the back of their truck.

Turned out great!
Unreal! love watching your videos
Otro excelente trabajo Jimbo, saludos desde Venezuela.
This is awesome!!!
Simple build but effective for the job required . Dont need an expensive custom job from the manufacturers..
Nice work, as usual. I like the look - simple and clean.
Great job
Great job Jimbo! Doesn’t stand out to much and nice and simple. I think I’m going to do one just like it for my truck. Thank you :)
Awesome.Mr Jimbo's
Chingon!!!!
Great job! as always!
Great build as always. I love your simple and to the point approach. It would be interesting to see a few examples of how you use it in different situations. Thanks!
Hi Jimbo! Its always such a joy watching your videos. Love the way you work and the way you edit your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing your passion with us! Greatings from Argentina
Nice work! Looks great on the truck!
Black truck in the desert? You're a brave man (or a glutton?), Jim! Thank you for all you do to teach all of us! Best, @BranchAndFoundry
G'day Jimbo, Rack looks Great, another great little project.
Simple parts turns out so nice after you dealt with. Great job like usual and thanks for another lesson of honest work. 👍😁Stay healthy and blessed 🇦🇹 (Vienna /Austria)

Looks good Jimbo. Quite an upgrade from the ranger 👍 Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
Good job man.
Beautiful work i am like it
Really enjoy your channel. I'm just starting out in fabrication and Mig welding and I learn something new from every one of your videos. The rack was a very sharp looking build. Cheers.
great job !!
Отлично!

Very Nice.
Great timing, I need to make a similar rack this weekend...

Looks great. Might have to make one for my father in law’s Silverado

Jim you're the baddest vato on the west coast! 😎
Great job as always Jimbo. I love the vids.
Nice job i like it
I like it!
Wow your an amazing welder dude !!
Nice!!!!
very nice
How did you install it? Do you have to drill the bed? And what type of screw, did you use?
I don't know English but I see all your videos, you are very good at working... Master!
Awesome! Im gonna make it for my Toyota Hilux👌
I love your RD SUX sticker! River Dave, rules!!!
Great job Mr Jimbo!! 💪🏻💪🏻💥💥
Nice choice for a new truck. I thought most people in So Cal avoid black due to the heat gain but it sure looks nice. The rack should be very “functionable”.
Looks great - always a treat to see your projects Jimbo! As I watched you cut out and weld the two braces, I thought to myself had he cut out a couple circles (maybe one large to the front and a smaller to the back) you would still have the structural support, but also a grabbing point for straps. Silly me to doubt your thought process - as the video progressed you already had that covered with your to bent rods. Always the man, thanks for today's video, my coffee breaks are always the better watching your channel!
Loving the steel toecap socks Jimbo
Dig the RD Sux sticker!
Glad you updated to a Chevy!
nice truck jimbo........rack looks great.......all the best............stay safe..............dougie
Those welds have come some way!!DIMES 👨🏭💰
I lovet
👍👍
Класс!!!
For us newbies, you should make a video showing us how you use that rack. I'm always a bit nervous about how I tied down the steel I get at the supply store to bring it home. I'd like to know how to do it safely.
Good to see how the pros show how the work should be done and how the DIY's we can learn and i have 1 question how did you atached to the pick up bed thanks for sharing your knoledge
Great job and the welds look great! Nice look with the angle cuts on the tubing. Question: did you end up cleaning off the mill scale before powder coating, especially from the 3/16" thick angle?
Jimbo, love your videos. Watch them all the time. And I’m wondering how that window behind your shop saw station , never brakes. What’s up with that. Is it bullet proof!!!! Keep it up Jimbo. Thanks for sharing.
Awsome Job Jimbo! Im curious, do you use stainless steel in all your projects? the metal always look so clean!
Looks good. I would've liked to seen a couple holes cut into the brace to use for your tie down points. I use lots of straps but I see your need for hooks for using your rope . Looks good

Old blokes and rope. "I can do a trucker's knot and get it pretty tight" they say. I have a 3 tonne strap that could break things in half if I wanted.

I was an "old school" rope guy until my buddy pushed me to just try a motor cycle ratchet strap. I still carry a long rope but always use tie downs when able.
I would of plasma cut the Ford logo into the support plates and added two upper supports in each internal corner to reduce lateral sway, great build
@Al-ix5um

Would have looked funny on his new GMC Sierra
I get the feelings behind not wanting the lateral stops poking up, but here's a thought: Why not cut some larger tube in half and notch it so that it lays down flat over the main bar when not in use, but if/when you need it, you just fold it up?

15 yrs is a solid track record. If it ain't broke... Plus you know flip-up do dads may rattle. KISS method. Best, @BranchAndFoundry
Great job! I'm gonna build mine for my Ram 1500 out of 2x2 square tube. What wall thickness should I use?
Hi Jim, what fasteners did you use to bolt it to your truck, im thinking about doing the same thing with my mazda bt50
it needs some gussets on the top angles. imo
@NPC-ro5io

Good call. Definitely a weak point. Wouldn't have taken long to make a couple and would have made it stronger.
Did you drill the mounting holes before powder coating?
1st to comment 👍👍👍🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 fabulous works
No corner gussets for the top bar?
shouldve added some gussets on the pipe joints. that would be your weakest point since the bottom is so beefy. besides that great looking rack!
how do you like that Evolution chop saw compared to the Slugger ?
Looks good but have you ever thought about buying a bandsaw for your shop? It seems like it would help a lot.
So is for long pieces of wood/metal so you can close your tail gate and rest it on this? That's cool! I would like to build me something like that for my truck!
Hows was it bolted down.. ?
What do you use it for? We use various racks and tube systems here in Australia so they can be dual purpose for our contractor(tradie)/camping utes (pick ups)
Stick gum on the top for security rack
Where do i find a little vise like that!!
What saw blade are you using on your chop saw?
What was the episode that you visit metal supermarket shop?
Should've plasma cut the little brackets with a JG cut into them
How did you bolt is down as well as find your angle
Looks good bud. Question, how do you keep weld spatter/bb's from sticking to the table?
@Noahlochner0
3 жыл бұрын
You can buy some anti spatter spray which helps with the bb's sticking, Usually you can scrape them loose after.

Olá Jimbo's vc tem que colocar seu logo no pedaço de metal ao lado ...
@renatommiranda

Hello jimbos you must put your logo in the pice of metal in the side ...
How many miles are on the ranger after 17 years?
I'm taking back the dewalt metal chop saw, the base and clamping construction is cheap and flimsy... So I'm considering the fien and the evolution, I know you've used both can you give me a pro or con of either or maybe which you would recommend I go with? Thanks, love your videos!
@Nesutaadesu
3 жыл бұрын
I have the evolution (rage 3 I believe) great little saw considering how inexpensive it is. The fence flexes a little compared to the Rage 2 model but some people fix this by welding a bit of metal on the back. You can see it in use in one of my videos. I use fiens carpentry tools and they are always fairly high end feeling although I haven’t used their metal saw. Hope this helps with your search!
Why didn’t you paint? Who do you use to powder coat ? THANK YOU!
@drewt3210
3 жыл бұрын
Powder coat is much more durable. Will look good for as long as Jim keeps his truck! Best, @BranchAndFoundry
Nice job at least you got a GMC this time
You should have plasma cut your logo into the support brackets.
No rear rack?
i like ur work especially ur welding… can you custom made the rack for truck as well? i will pay top $ . btw, what state are from?
So all that's pretty much just for looks? Or am I missing the purpose for a single hoop "roll bar" looking thing, that mounts only to the bed rails.

So what is the functionality of the half-rack?

What is a half rack good for? (Purpose). Just curious.
@rickramirez8664

They're cab protectors. With uprights to limit movement wood or pipe can be propped on them and secured. The ones with mesh or louvres protect the back glass from hay bales or wood, etc. thrown into the bed of the truck.
Will you make me one of those?
