Custom Cables: Split Wires Guide

Ғылым және технология

You will find split wires on almost every Power Supply, so to sleeve cables you must know how to deal with these. This is a detailed guide on how to build split wires in a way that makes them almost unnoticeable, very clean and maintain perfect function.

###Splicing tip### When ever I make a soldered splice. Like how you used the connector pin to crimp the wires together. Instead I grab a section of scrap wire and strip a few inches of the insulation from it. Now, I take my cutters and clip a strand or two off the stripped end of the scrap piece. I then use these strands of wire to wrap around my splice . This holds the splice together neatly for soldering. Once soldered I end up with a thin but very secure connection.

I like to use the tension of the main cable. I bush out the cable to be spliced into the main. Then I compress themain so that there are gaps you can see through. Pushing the splice cab into the gaps and then pull the main after the splice is pushed through while twisted the main slowly applying pressure. Clip it into the third hand and solder the two together. Makes a cleaner neater package that you wouldn't know is there if there was no shrink De demarking the splice. Also liquid electrical tape can be applied to the join and shrink applied after sleeping. Much cleaner looking and won't arc should it come into contact or close proximity to bare metal.

Great video. I really appreciate your method if crimping the split instead of soldering. Definetly something I will try out. I would personally never solder a cable that I intended to crimp. The reason is that if you increase the risk of gas pockets forming and that could lead to a cable fire.

  • @V8VRUte

What you did with the molex terminal on the crimp, is what I've been doing for the last few years with Automotive wiring at work. I actually prefer it to a soldered splice, it's quick and easy, and there is no risk of a dry or dodgy solder, and although not an issue in a computer, a crimped joint has no risk of breaking from vibrations and a non flexible joint. I tend to put the terminal in the crimpers and lightly close them to hold the terminal, then cut the flag end off, then open the crimpers back up and put in the wire that is being spliced on to, then start to close the crimpers again, then insert the wire that I'm splicing into the joint, then crimp. I've been considering making my own cables, and had planned on doing the same, so I'm glad to see that the Pro's are already doing it this way as well.

great job! have you ever tried using a jig to find all of your final lengths last? ie set everything up in location, with combs etc, and a little over length, then you could slide a modified hollowed connector to where all the wire should end (minus pin and connector length) and cut every wire to it final length there exactly and in one go; like a bowl cut! I don't know if there are issues with this, But i believe it would be very accurate and also save a lot of measuring. it should also allow for prefect bent lengths. Your build are inspirational🤓

I contacted EVGA's customer service regarding split wires when I was about to sleeve my G850. The answer I got was that double wires (at least for the G850) are redundant and are only there for future standards. With that in mind I sleeved all cables without a single split wire, making sure that all voltages were correct. It has now been running with those sleeved cables for almost a year without any problems and they look pretty nice as well. I am sure that not doing split wires saved me a lot of headaches. I don't see how this wouldn't apply to other PSUs as well as long as the voltages are correct that is.

Thank you for another great video. Honestly one of the best channels out there. Couple of questions. I'm in the process of building my dream rig and am anxiously awaiting what feels like 6 months for my SMA8. I want to do custom cables but the reality is I don't have the time. I'm skeptical of the mass fab cables from cablemod etc. and I really don't want to sacrifice on quality for this project. I'm curious if you offer custom cables for an EVGA Supernova 1600 P2? I wont have final measurements of the cables until the case arrives but I'd figure I'd ask ahead of time. On a completely unrelated note. I intend on purchasing the protirum D5 pump top, res, cover etc. But I'm unsure of what pumps are compatible and if you have an installation guide. This will be my first hardline build and want to do my homework. I would love a video displaying your new products and a guide on installing them.

In the place of splitting wire corsair install capacitors! And here's my question: "Do you use capacitors in your cable builds when use Corsair RM series PSU or not? If you do, what kind of capacitors do you use?"

Your technique of using that Molex Pin to crimp the two wires together is very similar to what the Automotive world does for splicing. We call the splice clips (but they are added by machines, and just the area that clips the two wires together). I've been doing splices like this for about 15 years (right after I learned how they do it in the automotive world). They then use either tape or waterproof heat shrink to protect the splice.

Good video, bit wouldn't it make sense to use a small splice crimp or one of the small solder splice connectors that heat shrink to the wires? It would still be small enough to sleeve afterwards and you wouldnt need to fidget with two wires in a pin crimp.

I’m not sure how different it would be when soldering wire vs soldering electronic components, but the soldering makes me think it might be a cold joint. But it probably doesn’t matter and it’s possible that the heat spreads too much when trying to apply solder by heating up the wire. The insulation might melt before the solder flows. I love this channel, BTW!!

I am using a power supply tester on them before using in my system but every 8 pin pcie I have made so far keeps tripping the system when plugging it into the psu tester. The psu powers on fine when the cable is plugged into it but trips when I plug it into the tester. Could it be a bad split that I'm doing or a faulty psu? Any ideas pls as can't find a proper pinout for the ax1200i that includes pcie.

That, with the combination of the sleeve would make it too thick and therefore make it extremely tough to insert it into the end connector.

I think Ive come across one PSU without them. Might have been the EVGA 1600w.

I've been building cables for 15 years. Please don't double crimp wires that way. Every terminal is designed to work one way. Doing what he did by crimping and cutting the terminal will fail a pull test. Please solder them together or use the proper connecting terminals.

Can't do it without shrinkwrap? what universe is cablemod from then? Just saying you shouldn't just say flat out it's impossible

I would rather want to know the answer how they could do without split wire. Literally most custom cables i come across have split wire.

That would be great, but unfortunately even EVGA is strange that way. Maybe when 24 pin headers get a rework after another 20 years *fingers crossed

Derek Peterson I check my cablemod cables since I have some. actually it's because they use thin 18awg wire and Paracord which is 5mm which allows to combine 2 wire into a connector. Not to say it cant be done but depends on the wire and material. For custom cables like SG will use 16awg thick wire and mdpc x sleeve. It's literally impossible to do it clean like cablemod Paracord. Just to let u know the material quality is also different here since the wire sg use is very high quality and the mdpc is thick.

gotcha, but at the same time the cablemesh cables are PLENTY enough gauge for any amount of wattage you could chuck at a gaming system. Unless you're running multiple feet for a single rig there just isn't reason to go super thick

Derek Peterson Well the standard size 60cm isnt a problem. I think probably length like 100cm + could be an issue I'm not sure. My local modders use 18 awg and find it no issue even stock cables are 18awg. 16awg is thicker so it's able to keep it's shape better and also looks better with sleeve. Basically it's just matter of opinion and esthetics. Since sg are custom Modder I don't think the will skip on the quality just to save cost. But as a customer we know 16awg to 18awg is insignificant in performance.
