My Grandfather, Henry Kleckler, was Glenn Curtiss’ best friend, plant foreman. Henry was also Curtiss’ chief design engineer from 1906 to 1920. Henry was instrumental in designing all of Curtiss’ airplanes and engines during that time. It thrills me to see someone building and flying these wonderful airplanes.

Actually, the X-1 achieved 1,000 MPH in 1948, and the speed of sound in 1947 and the Curtiss Pusher 'D' first flew in 1911. There were people who witnessed the former and worked on the latter. You may be referring to the X-15 that flew Mach 6.72 at 102,100 feet (31,120 m), a speed of 4,520 miles per hour in 1967. But, at any rate, It was well within one lifetime that these incredible advances were made.

    5 жыл бұрын

Yes and no... the modern engine is 100HP and the original was only 40, but the old engine turned a much larger propeller at a much lower rpm so it probably produced more thrust and performed better. The modern engine would be kind of like driving a car in 5th gear... all the time, even at low speed.

@@serioustrouble63 What counts is thrust power, which is thrust times airspeed. With the lower propeller efficiency from the fast spinning prop at a low airspeed, the thrust horsepower is almost certainly a smaller percentage of the engine's 100HP than the 40HP engine. That's not to say the 100HP engine won't give better performance, it might and it might not, but not nearly as much as you might think. I read a report of a Bleriot using a modern 100HP engine with a small propeller spinning fast; its performance was much worse than the original with its 37hp engine. Now if the engine was geared down to the same rpm as the original so it could turn a big prop, then you'd see the full benefit of the increased horsepower.

This really gives you a sense of what the early fliers felt when going up in these glorified kites! Looking at the wooden hardware, one gets more a sense of nautical that aerial (especially when flying over ponds)!

Glad you enjoyed it. We'll follow up with a clip on the aircraft itself and how it operates sometime in the next year. The tube in front is air speed indicator, but you can just put out your hands and get a feel for it. Altitude is purely on sight.
