I love this movie. The costumes and colors are unreal. I watched The Assassins with Chow yun Fat last night and it was also very good. Again, the costumes and emphasis on detail were amazing.

Joey Gamboa actually I never understood her origins, only that I don't trust the English dub Historically Chinese emperors married within the nobility/aristocracy; rarely from other nations (even those from allies/feudal states), which are considered barbarian nations

It's a historical fiction set in a Tang dynasty era so anything can happen. The current Emperor was once a lowly general who had somehow gained the favor of the previous Emperor. It wasn't told what he did to gain the previous Emperor's favor but he was able to marry the princess (who is now the current Empress). She may have been the previous Emperor's only child which is why the throne went to her husband because he was very much liked by his father-in-law. It was only here that they have only mentioned her father being the former Emperor. There were no mentions of any male siblings who could have been next in line for the throne.

The movie is unclear about precisely when, but at some point he divorced his original wife (the mother of his oldest son and heir) in order to make a more advantageous marriage. The eldest son was not a secret, nor was he an illegitimate bastard. Just the product of the emperor's first legal and legitimate marriage. His other 2 sons are from his current marriage with the empress.

The dialigue is totally different from the subtitled version, no wonder people are confused about what's going on. Why would anyone watch a dub anyway? They miss out on the real performances of the cast, especially from Gong Li in this movie.

3:01 imagine knowing your wife was cheating on you for years but you were both owners of a huge company so you didnt say anything... instead you just take 10k from her check and put it in the bank under your name... Emperor is getting his revenge and loving every drop! I love this and the last scene.

The emperor was using her too and she’s aware of it since his first son belongs to the only woman he ever really loved. The same woman he betrayed and got sent to near death just to steal the throne. They both equally despise the other

He Poison the Empress for so long....pitty :(

Her entire court poisoned her with their deceit.

The movie in itself is magnificent, the plot is rather flakey, Li Gong is at her best.

They always try to translate it and then make it flow like an english movie with english phraseology... I mean it's cute but if you read the subtitles it makes more sense. This sub however seems to go well with the entire movie. Same flavor, different packaging I guess...

Like everyone here, I love this film and have watched it many times - but always with original language and subtitles: the sound of the language adds so much!

omg the dub sucks. it ruins the whole movie... so much better to just watch with subtitles..

I watched the original movie with subtitles in English. It was much better. I'd rather hear the actors' actual voices than this.

I don't quite understand. The King poisoned Queen to make her die... so at the end, when Jay Chou killed himself, is it to make sure that King will stop poison the Queen? Because upon Jay Chou's death, they both have zero next-in-line. So, the Queen needs to be alive in order to make new babies

Honestly it's better with the subtitles, that's how I've always seen it. Also, Gong Li's English is mostly just phonetic learning, so doing a major role like this in English would be a struggle for her. If you think to most of her English speaking roles, she doesn't have such a huge role. It's best to watch this in the original Chinese.
