Curry Tabanca - Trinidad All Stars
Ойын-сауық
Perhaps the most popular panorama arrangement to have never won the competition - the 1987 ground breaking performance of Trini's Curry Tabanca, arranged by Leon 'Smooth' Edwards for the Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra. Listen for the seamless incorporation of East Indian Tassa instruments into the arrangement and the simulation of the tassa drums by the pan. Enjoy the excitement over and over again!

To this day it is the most stunning performance I've ever heard. It was the first time I understood that the judges choice and the people's choice. After the 1987 Panorama, the year of this great offering, the radio stations played Phase II's "This Feeling Nice" twice or 3 times & Renegades "Pan in A minor" 3 or 4 times but All Stars' "Curry Tabanca" was played 8 to 10 times. Eventually the stations didn't play either Phase II or Renegades as much but they jammed "Curry Tabanca" all through the year. It was the first year where I heard a lot of people said the judges didn't know what they were doing. I would have to agree. Thank all goodness we can play this & other Panorama classics to our hearts content.

The peoples choice included players in the other bands.
Only one who truly appreciates pan music can understand the historical relevance of this masterpiece!!!! Love it!!! I was only 9 years old at this time!
Steel pan + Tassa drums = PERFECTION ❤
2023 and still the BEST performance ever.❤❤❤
The players in this steel band: they are truly all stars 🌟🌟🌟
My dad just passed away and his whole life he was an All Stars Fan I'm going to play this song and Woman of Bass at his funeral to send him off thank you All Stars for great pan over the years continue the great arrangements
from 80 to 87 smooth could have won every panorama ...........every panorama!
Allstars forever. Curry Tabannca, this will always be my favorite. Love it..
Best ever! TTT used to show this video right after Sesame Street. Brings back memories.
Hmmm. Thirty-five years later and the perfection of this arrangement still gives me goosebumps!
The last 2 minutes and 41 seconds of this is the single greatest piece of music ever played at a Panorama - and I was right there in the North Stand (R.I.P) to witness it. 4th place my ass!
Man! You have to be there to really get the true feel of steelpan. Steelpan is best when heard live. Still, this is some great music!!!

+Wesley Rampersad I only went live once in 1995, after listening to all I could find for 5 years. I worried that I might be overpowered... and at the semi- finals, I cried openly in the stands, till some lady asked if I was alright. I poured out my emotion and joy about the music to her, I hope she understood. I was more composed for finals, and predicted the Renegades would win. Such a powerful and joyful music!

The arrangement ran over the ten minutes...
Tight! is an understatement. All Stars, as one would say one of the only bands that can sound like a single tenor; single Chellos and single bass when it a complete band of 120 players. The syncopation is unbelievable sharp even in the high pitch runs and accurate stops.

Trinidad All Stars at their finest... I love this Steel Orchestra. They will always be my #1 Band
Seriously 4th place, allthese years later still a claasic . Won the world panorama champion with this very arrangement.
RIP Marcia Henville... The intro was indeed a performance worth waiting for and you at 0:30 to 0:40 when the camera turns away set the stage for a memorable performance that will forever live on. Even though you are gone you will never be forgotten, in the jam at 3:42 to 3:47. You left us with your love for life and music 5:35 to 5:50 show what a lost we have suffered as you displayed your talent on the pan. We all love you will never forget you.

I was 12 and my friend cousin and myself ran away from church camp to see this. Only had money to get there. Luckily we ran into a teacher colleague of my moms and they returned us to camp after. The adults were upset but they were like I hope it was good, we were like it was glorious. I think the news had us jumping up on tv that’s how they knew we were gone.
There is no way this band lost. And they came back later to win the International World Championship with this song. This song highlights our culture African, East Indian, Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Syrian, and every race in between.
I remember when they was Catelli! I went to school on george street and always use to go listen to them in the pan yard, love it!!

I still remember every part of this arrangement all these years later. It was one of the best ever!!!
One of the best. Never grows old.
Had to come back to this. Amazing!!!!
This performance is the most memorable of my childhood. All the years going to the Savannah during panorama. I remembered watching it at home wiyh my mom and to this day, is still my favorite of all times. I still get excited hearing it. The opening did it for me. ❤
Simply amazing!!! WOW. Memories of my homeland. ❤
This arrangement here. Genius level. This is God.

It brings me such JOY :)
Makes my pores raise everytime I listen to this rendition
this is when Leon smooth put himself on the map as an musical innovator . Hard !
Nostalgia! The meaning of Panorama finals back in the day was Trinidad All Stars! I could listen to this perfomance 1000 times again and still be electrified by the sound.
OMG,,,,,,MOST AMAZING PAN ARRANGEMENT I'VE EVER HEARD! Absolutely stunning! One of my favorite songs...completely renovated and brought to justice....WOW! How could this performance not have won?
Only a few seconds in and my pores raising!!!! So proud of my country!
Probably the single best example of how inadequate Panorama judging is when face to face with innovative emotional genius
That year All Stars should have gotten 1st 2nd and 3rd prize
Best way to explain this awesome rendition and pan in general to a tourist, is to simply let them hear it. The vibe will raise their soul, and enhance their appreciation of modern music in the 21st century forever!
What a fucking memory wow all stars forever 🍻🍻🇹🇹
The greatest panorama song ever! ever!!
I still get goose bumps everytime I hear this. I love my All-Stars!
Dis is one of Allstars best performences ever..even though i wus not born yet....jus t the harmony between the double seconds and the tenor when they play the chorus is breathtaking!!!
This just makes me so happy...wonderful music from a wonderful country. #SweetTnT
Still in love

After so many years I still get goose bumps listening to this. Great arrangement.
Thank you All Stars, brings back fond memories. Curry was my first T&T panorama experience and 21 years later, still outstanding!! A belly full of All Stars...
The best performance that never won Panorama 😭.
So much can be said about this arrangement...when you hear the tassa at 8:37, you figure thats the climax....then when the pans come back in at 8:45 simulating the tassa, you are sent completely over the edge, over the top, wild..genius stuff
The very best of pan music.👍👍👍👍👍
This makes my West Indian scalp tingle when I hear this musical work of art. :) Amen.
One of the sweetest arrangements ever, would have won if they didn't go over the time limit.
Leon "smooth" Edwards - The genius. One of a kind, bruh!
The greatest final night "performance" that could have possibly been allowed by the musical Gods at that time. Musical Mastery that set the bar for Panorama after this performance.
personally i never heard such a fantastic performance...it is just outstanding...specially played at full volume
GENIUS !! A magical moment in time!
Classic, 🔊🔊🎶🎶🇹🇹🇹🇹☝🏿☝🏿
I am not a big pan lover but this is my all time favourite in terms of pan music......that piece of Tassa and the intro laaawwwddd have mercy.....sweeeeettttt music!!! I'm jealous of anyone who heard that live in the Savannah the night it was played.....

This was one of the best years of pan for AllStars... I was there to hear it LIVE and I can tell you all these years later, it still gives me chills whenever I hear it. Smooth is the Peter Minshall of Pan... Totally untouchable in his craftsmanship. Now in 2014 and beyond you will hear other bands copying his innovative styles of incorporating East Indian tassa and African drumming into the rhythm section. The came out on top with Peoples Choice that year.... The People had the last say.
Curry Tabanca just keeps on inviting me to listen, enjoy immensely and learn. And I go willingly ever so often. It must be the twenty plus years I lived in Trinidad. The arrangement and execution are immortal. What more can I say! Play on! Play on! Love it!
The best band that year. Every aspect was on point.
12 bass means 12 full length 54 gallon drums each with only two or three bass notes on it., sometimes even four. All placed in a cluster., and note just how all the players are moving together playing exactly the same bass notes. In a big band 6 to 8 players on each flank., right side and left side of band. Part of the absolutely genious of the history of the steel band (orchestra).

A legendary arrangement
Fantastic...
That was a fantastic calypso, and it sounded freaking fabulous on steel pan.
Best EVER. Brings back some great memories and the best feelings.
BEAUTIFUL!!!Sweet Music!!!
This performance did two things for me when I was 8 years old in 1987 - it gave me a grand appreciation for the steel pan; and conversely it made me never listen to Panorama again. I remember staying up with my mother and watching this performance and then declaring that was the best I had ever heard, so I went to bed. Next morning waking up and saying to my mother that All Stars played really good and deserved their first place, only to find out they came 3rd. I was so shocked that I vowed never to listen to Panorama again. TO this day it baffles me as to why they did not win. My mom at the time said that an "un-sponsored band" would never win.
@partylap

Dunno if she meant All Stars, but in my lifetime, they were never un-sponsored.
@nibadda
8 жыл бұрын
By "un-sponsored band" in that era must have meant for her not sponsored by a well known cooperation. They were Catelli All Stars in those days; Catelli, as a business organization, not as well known as WITCO (Desperadoes) West Indian Tobacco Company or any of the others
@partylap
8 жыл бұрын
Un-sponsored always meant that....no sponsor, like Phase 11 were "in that era". Catelli were as well known as WITCO as just about everybody had peas, beans and pasta in their kitchen (they were probably the only manufacturer then). And more so because the band they were sponsoring was All Stars.

They actually came 4th. Best band of the night in terms of performance but they didn't win because they basically lost points for: 1. Going over the allotted time. 2. Rushing the arrangement.
Nice rhythm, I love this kind of music, and makes my spirit and my heart rejoice greatly!
One of the All Time Great Performance..Should have Won ..Bravo Leon "smooth " Edwards
OMG! I Absolutely Love this arrangement! So Beautiful!
This music became so famous that for years it has being played in parties in TT
Steel-ban music at its very best!...Where else can you go on this planet for a better performance by any steel orchestra? That's right no where!.... this is all time classic....arrangers will study this piece of music for decades to come. Pay attention!
Played mas in 69 and 70 with Starlift with QRC Sixth form mates. Diehard Starlift fan until I heard this performance at the very Panorama. The greatest performance on at a Panorama finals. " Smooth" is a genius. Now diehard All Stars fan. Long Live All Stars !!
This very true, Smooth is a genius and was at the Big Yard for all of All Stars 80s performances and have such great memories after all these years. Curry Tabanca and Hammer were masterpieces and these videos give me thrills and warmth up here in the US every time I hear them.
Pure Awesomness!
One of my top three favorite arrangements in any panorama. And the band just nails it... sick.
