Curro apologizes for alleged racist stereotype of black child as cashier

In an emotional call, Thembisa shared some painful memories of her granddaughter in a religious school end-of-year play dressed as a maid.

Representation matters Clement. My kids were born in WC - Somerset West in the mid 90s. I didn't realise how the impact of the place until we moved to GP, and my daughter asked me if blacks could be doctors? Up to that time, the only doctors they had seen were white. So please, people must not say it doesn't matter. We need to see ourselves in all these careers, not just as maids etc.

Perpetual lessons we ought to take serious: 1. Ultimately, white people are being white people and they invest and build their own institutions. 2. Let's [ continue] not [to] accept mediocrity and the perpetual stereotype we're subjected to, especially as a black society. 3. Let's invest in our own, let's build our own equally strong institutions, and the best place to start is to put right leaders in the right positions both in government and any other community programs. Let's remove pensioners in power because they will never act in the best interest for the future of South Africa. 4. Let's stop getting drunk week in and week our, sober up and be intentional about building this country, and in fact Africa to be a thriving and prosperous home. Let's discard the mindset that we have to interpret ourselves as poor and disabled to do anything. WE HAVE IT ALL.

Why are we not investing in our own schools and build our own schools where white kids will want to apply at as well. Siyahlupha thina shame. In my opinion, many of the schools Curro took over instantly changed for the worse. Discrimination and Racism were immediately imposed. I was at a tertiary institution that Curro took over the year before I joined. The year I joined they fired a senior lecturer because she spoke about philosophy to the first year students and the possibility that "A higher power such as God may or may not exist". Some of those first year students took offense and insisted she get fired. Those that stood by her who weren't Christian were targeted including me. I was ganged up by the students in the campus yard after lectures because I offered to attend her disciplinary hearing in order to give a statement about what occurred. I was told "I had no right to give my side of the incident because I am not a Christian and I should mind my own business." The higher ups at the institution did nothing to intervene nor did they discipline those students even though I reported it to them. The students made my first year at the institution hell for me and as a result I transferred to another University thankfully. This isn't Curro's first incident - it's part of the many that occurred over the years. I hope that all discrimination and racial matters will be taken seriously and dealt with at all Curro schools.

So maybe kids in school plays should have 2 roles or 2 characters that they are playing?? That might be too much for much younger kids to not confuse and forget some lines? Maybe eliminate some "less important" roles from plays, and have all kids play important roles? But for adults its important to keep in mind (differentiate) blatant racism vs sub-conscious racial bias, which might be more damaging. I am sure the school would respond its just a play, why be too serious. But sadly this plays out in real life everyday events. No matter how some black people are "qualified and fit for the higher roles" they are ALWAYS seen as the maid, the garden attendant. Always seen as only fit for lower wage.

It sounds like the trauma is with the parent which is very understandable in the south african context. My advice to parents would be, not to start a storm in a teacup, but rather motivate your kid to be then sassiest a cashier or the funniest Mrs piggy etc. Approach the teachers and tell them that your child loved being part of the play and if they can get a more leading role in the next and offer your assistance. This is why black people continue to lag behind. We live in a racial society whether you want to accept that or not. This society distributes resources based on race and black people as a whole are given the least amount of resources. However we as black people are the ones actually maintaining the economy of these other races that you praise. Orania can exist because other racial groups value themselves and they are not waiting for someone else to validate and give them permission to do what is necessary to ensure their community thrives. Even if it means that what they do will harm others they do it for their benefit. We black people are waiting for validation and permission and we make no progress. We want to continue fooling ourselves by not accepting reality and realising that whether you get 30% or 100% the resources available to you are allocated based on race. Therefore the only way to truely move forward is to group together and work as a team. We have to support our race unapologetically. We have to spend most of our time building our own institutions that prioritise our people and stop spending every second building other people's community thinking they will do the same for us. They won't and have never done such.
