Current Problems and When I Went To Captain's Mast. Episode 08 Day 26

295 Days Deployment Episode 08 Day 26
In This Video: Day 26 of deployment. Friday 26APR19. Today I am sharing with you my concerns at this point (my Chief is leaving) also the moment I lost hope in the Navy.
Captain's Mast: When sailors break a the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) they are processed and their fate is decided by the Commanding Officer (CO). However, you can also request Captain's Mast in gain audience with the Captain who is ultimately in charge of final say for anything. In my case my overseas leave request was denied by the Executive Officer (XO) which I believed was unjust considering hundreds of people were going on leave at the time I requested.
About The Deployment Series
I will be sharing with you the ups and downs of my 295 day journey. I will NOT be sharing with you any information that may be considered OPSEC. These series of videos are primarily going to be focused on the emotional, physical, and mental impact a sailor goes through during deployment. I hope you get a lot of value of it and enjoy!

    I was only in 6 years but you described how most Navy careers go. They come in all wide eyed & ready to work & then the system hits them & they just try to ride it out till the enlistment is over. I was lucky that I was able to cross rate, but they don't make it easy if you don't like your rate. I was 18 when I went in & my recruiter was like a car salesman who is looking out for himself & not the recruit . My dad did 22yrs but I never liked the military part, just the travel.

    Yoon, it’s not always personal but then again it’s not always fair. Always do your best no matter what, don’t let things like this define who you are.

    yeah, it's not always personal. Don't be part of that entitled generation that cry about the littlest sh!t. "I'm gonna pick up all my marbles and go home, boo hoo." You can't have that kind of attitude during war time, FFS.

    Damn, sorry to hear that. Having strong enlisted leaders is key to stop that from happening. That's to be expected from officers but we rely on enlisted leaders to inject some common sense and humanity into the conversation.

    Agree. My senior chief at the time, i shouldve said in this video, really stuck with me and sat right next to me talking to the captain. However, the captain belittled me and my senior. I'll always respect my senior chief for that.

    I had 2 captains masts, and 2 admiral masts in 1 month at MSC because I was trying to get paid off a ship because the agency was withholding my training after they refused to allow me to go to A-School (denied at MEPS) right after being hired.

    Requesting Captains mast is not the same as actual Captains mast is it? It's basically when you want to jump the chain of command to ask something right? I'm a lowly EM3 I need to know this.

  • @MrYoonKim

    @MrYoonKim

    4 жыл бұрын

    Its not the same. Its frowned upon to request a captain's mast. In my case was because of leave. You would want to give your chain of command an opportunity to hear your situation, if they still refuse your request then you would request a captains mast (not in trouble)

    So often can you take leave ? And if your home town is close, can you take a quick trip on the weekend and be ready for work on Monday ?

    Assuming you're off on the weekend and your destination is within the liberty radius then yes you can do that. Usually theres a certain amount of miles you can travel outside of the base while on liberty

  • @MrYoonKim

    @MrYoonKim

    As long as your travel destination is within 350 mile radius of the ship it is okay to travel on weekends. It would be wise to let your upper chain know of your intentions incase anything were to happen. I have done just that many of times from Virginia to Pennsylvania.

    2004, chain of command gave us 3 different military leave dates, first one,we got tickets and within a week we were informed there is a change. spme soldiers changed their tickets, others lost money because it was not refundable. 2nd date came and we ran to the phones to make our arrangements. 2 days later, cancelled. 3rd date was given, by now guys have lost over 1000$. others trying to change their flights. some waited till the last minute to buy a ticket thats 3x the price. everyone deserves military leave, but shit happens, its the military

    What is his leave balance? I know that everyone can't go on vacation/leave at the same time, but if this Sailor is carrying 50 days or more, it means he has not taken leave in over a year. And every October 1, any leave over 60 days is forfeited unless the Command grants a waiver to carry it over due to mission priorities, but it sounds like this Command would make him lose it.

    When I was in there were two types of captains mast. One was punitive, the other was meritorious. Basically punishment or to receive an award. When you requested to see the captain or CO we generally did not call that mast. I think that this is a case where Yoon pissed off some higher ups. I don't think that it was worth the fight unless it was for some big family event like a wedding or funeral. Your command basically figured that you were taking leave to just have fun. Like they said in boot camp there are three ways of doing things ... the right way, the wrong way and the Navy way. Guess which one wins out every time? Yep ... it's not a matter of right or wrong .. It's all about the Navy ...

    That’s how it was when I was in. Just because others are going on leave doesn’t mean you’re entitled to go at that time. Correct it’s a request. You shouldn’t have bought it unless you’re leave chit was approved. Operational commitment always comes first not your desire to go on vacation. The only vacation in the military grants is two weeks of leave for either Christmas or New Year’s. Unless you have some type of legal troubles and have been confined to the ship is the only time they don’t give you Christmas or New Year’s leave, but you serve as a E4 or not entitled to go on vacation when you feel like it if it goes against the operational commitment of what your command is tasked to do. So because you couldn’t go to Brazil when everybody else was a Brazil even though you took the sailors creed you had a temper tantrum You thought it was a game and now you don’t wanna play anymore so you decided to go to captains mast because you chose to buy a ticket in a hotel when you weren’t authorized to take leave . I’m surprised you didn’t get kicked out for giving out the location of naval vessels. SMH

    Leadership failed to do their job in planning for individuals’ leave. They know there is a minimum manning requirement and should have worked out a leave schedule well in advance, giving priority to those who requested leave first.

    Must have discipline in navy but sometimes it’s a small thing over nothing. Then you have a lot of different personalities around you it’s supposed to be a fair system but it’s the luck of the draw some spend 20 to 39 years and do well I’ve seen po1 and chiefs busted for really nothing
