Historically significant for what ISN'T reported. During the parade DDR Free Youth started chanting "Gorby Help us! Gorby save us!". Gorbachev said later he knew at that moment that for the DDR, or Honecker at least, the jig was up. He took the opportunity to inform him that the DDR was bankrupt and that the USSR would no longer be a source of cheap credit unless things changed. A protest outside the meeting was brutally stopped by security forces and hundreds were summarily taken into 'protective custody'. Already thousands of East Germans were fleeing to the west through Hungary and Czechoslovakia, who had opened their borders. Within a week Honecker was gone, within a month the Berlin Wall fell and slightly more than a year later the DDR was dissolved. But watching this you'd think everything was rosy.

What catches my eye AND what I REMEMBER as I'm of that age is that Gorbachev and the other Soviet leaderhip *_were still wearing dress hats._* For those of you that don't understand: by the latter 1980s headwear (hats) as part of western attire had pretty much disappeared: ESPECIALLY for "fashionable conscious" western leaders..... And so seeing Soviet-bloc leaders still having headgear as part of their regular attire REALLY STICKS OUT IN THE MIND.

Except for the language and some details of the uniforms this whole parade might have taken place in Red Square. From the ZIL parade cars to the Soviet style officer's hats, the rifles, vehicles and other weapons were all Soviet made or copies. Even the parade style and salutes were copied from the Soviets. By 1989 West Germany had a world class manufacturing capability producing everything from Mercedes, BMW's and Audi's to Leopard 2 tanks. From the grim looks on the faces of the dictators ("foreign dignitaries") on the parade stand it seems they already knew they were whistling past the graveyard.

Gorbi was rolling his eyes at the military parade and stopped saluting after a while. I know because I was there, just opposite the Ehrentribune working for Japanese TV (carrying boxes mostly -- I was a student). Note how they cut him out of the picture after a while. I thought it was pretty cool with the tanks doing tricks, belching diesel fumes and tearing up the pavement. We also did interviews on the street that day. I translated. Everyone was either furious because the GDR was such and embarrassing mess or furious because the capitalist media was interfering in East German affairs by asking people what they thought. The only cheerful person I remember was a Junger Pionier that evening at the torchlight parade, who stuck his head through the window of our car and yelled, "Die deutsche demokratische!"

This movie is a proof of how fast the world, as we know it, can go down. Everybody here in these clips played their roles to the perfection, like they had always done. Not one eyelid was lifted. But only 40 days later this regime, that you see here, was all finished. Gone for ever. I was a child of 9 years old, and I witnessed all of this. The Spirit was poured out. And it will happen again. It really will. You never know when this paradigm we live under, and all those things we hold for truth and right nowadays, is gone - just from one day to the next.

We had never seen cars like that before. It was early on a Sunday morning in November 1989. It was a lovely, warm fall day. The media did not even know about the many Trabants having crossed the border and stormed into the city center of Hamburg.Only a few people who were up early like we were, witnessed that and said "OMG, don't tell me they stormed across the border?" @@renataostertag6051 Oh, thank you for your testimony from Hamburg, on the 9th of November 1989, on the 33rd day after this military parade took place. And you know; that number (33) and that date (9/11) are both very special in numerologi. I experienced the downfall of communism, both from the inside and the outside, at the same time. Because I lived with my Eastern-European family in a Western country at the time. This thing that I saw; that communism fell, that it (so suddenly that nobody could have thought of it) came to its definite end - I have later always remembered when I see the wickedness and the evils of this world, that we still live in. That this is all just a game, a scene play. The powerful people, the rich, the perverts, the worshippers of evil - the Lords of this world, will loose their power and all their posessions when they least expect it. They, and their supporteres, will stay left with empty hands and will be absolutely nobodies - or even looked upon as crimimals. Its it difficult to belive all this when you look at what stong the power of autorities seem like nowadays. But when you have already seen an extreamly powerful and evil regime fall in just one day, you know that it is true. This rotten world fall again. Like a card-house - in one single day to come. You may have heard of what happened a few days ago in a Canadian province (Alberta) when they - the forces of evil = Alberta Health system - closed down a huge Church by putting three rows (!!!!) of fences around that church. It seems the people are holding their service outside this church tomorrow, Sunday, April 11th, 2021. Let's see if the Communist Gestapo will hurl them away. But things seem blury to many people, and Christians as well. We dont quite understand everything that is going on now. And I have to say that many christian communities and churches are being infiltrated. So that what is preached to the members at sevices and Mass is not the truth of the Gospel, but some twisted words to create chaos and misunderstanding amoung the children of God. (Just look at how homosexualism and transgenerism is preached in many churches now.) But we Christians must not look upon ourselves as victims of evil. As Jesus Christ was never a victim of evil. But he fought againt evil, and he won over it. We must see ourselves as warriors of Christ. We must prepare for the spiritual war. We must give everything. We must be ready to lay down our own lifes for it, if it is needed. We must not stand back and sob and be ashamed of the cross. And by the name of Jesus Christ we will win this battle. No way that satan will triumph in the end. No way! Come, oh, Holy Spirit to the world, and light the fire of love in the stone hearthed, wicked, blinded, poor people of earth - so that their tounges shall praise the name of the Lord day and night! @Sergey B. Actually, I have even family and very close friends that were in Stasi prisons. A couple did not return. Most did but were changed. Believe me, I recognize the shortcomings of the GDR as it existed back then, but what I see today even here in the U.S. comes very close and in many cases exceeds the repression of the East German Regime.
