I just bought a 96 after watching tons of videos and reading a million reviews and still wasn't prepared for how comfortable and smooth this car rides. When i get in other cars now I'm genuinely sad I'm not getting back into my Lincoln. Cruising around town is probably my favorite thing to do now, the clicks of the turn signals, the smoothness of the turning, the low rumble of the engine taking off. I smile every time I'm driving.

@@regalherbsman5938 if they haven't already you will need the ball joints replaced, my guess is they've already changed them cuz i mine had 100k miles on it and i could feel it pretty bad. But other than that I've had zero issues, granted I've put less than 10k miles on it but it runs great and still shifts well. I think the exhaust is rusted out in a spot but I've been too lazy to crawl under and check lol. But it's a joy to drive just takes a little getting used to how bouncy it is

No one should be “drifting” these cars, but that’s typical of irreverent youth who didn’t pay full price for these. They will trash anything they didn’t have to work for, and most of what they DID. These cars deserve respect. What we’ve got is all we’ve got left. No one should be making fun of you for favoring these cars. If they do, then those are people who should not own fine things. The 4.6 will go 300,000 to 400,000 miles with ease, properly maintained. The final gen of 4.6’s which ended with the demise of the car in 2011 have been known to turn up in inner cities in retired fleet vehicles that have been worked HARD, with 500 to 600K, on the original drive trains, still running, and weathered, but still shiny. I don’t care who makes fun of WHAT - That’s impressive performance. They are also quite fast for such big cars. They are so smooth that if you are not used to the cars you will be going 85 in no time but it will feel like 55. Anybody ridiculing these cars has no idea what they’re talking about. Those ‘90-‘97 Town Cars still look like such expensive, elegant cars. The world around them really has no idea what they gave up - in favor of plastic hatchbacks and SUV’s.

I bought my 97 Town Car in Fall of 2001. After almost 20-years I still love my car. Never have I owned a car more than 1-3 years. It was a lease return at my local Mercedes dealer. Apparently, the lease holder got a promotion and traded it in on a new Benz. I've kept meticulous service records to the point it scares me on how much one can spend on car maintenance over a 20-year period. My grandparents were Thunderbird fans starting with a new 1961 T-Bird in Honey Beige. They went on to a 1967, 1973, and then changed over to a new 1979 Lincoln MK V when they didn't like the 1977 T-Bird body style. They went on to a 1989 Town Car and their final... a 2003 Town Car (which I inherited with only 14,000 miles and it sits in storage since 2013 back in Michigan). Needless to say, my grandparents influenced my taste in cars. The biggest problem I've had with my 97 Town Car is the climate control system. I spent a fortune at lousy mechanics several years ago trying to find out why my A/C wasn't working. After spending $500 bucks with no results, I ended up at the Dealership (my last resort). Fortunately, I encountered a decent service writer who informed me that the ETC (Electronic Temperature Control) panel in the center of the dash was notorious for having a solder connection on the inside go bad. Since my Town Car was too old to get a new ETC at my local Ford dealer I went to my local wrecking yard "Pick-A-Part" near Long Beach, CA. and bought everyone they had (3-units in total) in hopes one of them was in good working order. However, I first spent a little KZread time to figure out how to remove the ETC unit from the dash. With a few of the right tools I can remove in under 10 minutes... and reinstall in another 10-minutes. Out of the 3-units I purchased that day the second one got my A/C working again. Fast forward a few more years and now I'm dealing with a bad heater core that I had to by-pass under the hood because I discovered one has to remove the entire dash board in order to access the heater core. Needless to say, I'm lucky I live in Southern California because there is no way on earth, I'm undertaking the removal of my dash board. Especially living in an apartment building with only a carport for parking. I'm too old and don't have all the right tools to do the job anyway. So now I'm in search of a decent mechanic/garage that knows Lincolns.... and Town Cars that I can trust to remove/replace my heater core and not cause any damage in the process. That needs to including replacing as many of those little dash light bulbs while the whole dash has been taking out.... and trust me there were almost 10 bulbs just in the ETC unit that I used the junk yard units to scavenge bulbs from. So, if anyone reading my long-winded commentary can suggest a trust worthy mechanic in the Los Angeles area that knows Lincoln Town Cars and can remove/replace the dash AND replace the heater core please contact me via this site. Thanks much! RJ - Santa Monica, CA

The big appeal of panther body cars is that they are the best representation of what life was promised to look like prior to 2007 (and even 9/11). It's comfortable, dead simple, reliable, over-built, well built, and smooth. It doesn't try to apologize for comfort by trying to be utilitarian like a truck or suv and it doesn't try to add luxury to performance. It's just a comfortable car that you don't mind being in. It doesn't make driving the experience like a corvette, but it doesn't make you hate the ride. It embodies the later life experience boomers expected before losing their pensions and retirements, and the laid-back feeling millennials remember from childhood. For a millennial, it reminds us of the care free feeling we had when we went to grandma's house and we got to just exist and enjoy life. It wasn't political or distressed like life got after 9/11 and 07. You don't understand the comfort until you are in it. Being stuck in traffic isn't even a big deal. You just cruise and relax. I don't think it's a feeling we will ever have access to again since the middle class it was built for is gone. Maybe it's because cars like this were built on the dreams and ideals of the ww2 generation. When they were new there was still a focus on making them happy and this is what they wanted for Americans. This was adopted by boomers but not built for them.

My first car in 2005, 1997 town car, bought it and drove it before passing driving test. That was in Ireland, country that hates cars, so I had to insure it in Poland and whole situation still was't entirely legal. Had to sell it for 700 euros because coppers didn't like my polish insurance and reg numbers and no Irish insurance company would have insured car with engine over 2 liters. I know it was stupid now, but at least I have good memories.

I’ve always loved the giant aircraft carriers, and no one gets it. All my buddies were into their Camaros and Mustangs when we were younger and I had a ‘73 Mercury Marquis. I’ve been a tech for 26 years now and I’ve had the chance to own a few of my absolute favorites including an ‘02 Deville, a ‘71 Monte Carlo and a 2000 Jag XJ8, which was an absolutely beautiful machine, besides the reliability lol. Hey I have a question, I found a 1997 Lincoln Town car with 8k miles and there selling it for $10,500. Do you think it’s worth the price. They say that the original owner never drove it during winter season and kept it in the garage.

Brandon the newest ones are nearly 10 years old, be prepared to put some wrench time into it. I bought an 08 grand marquis, mpg is rough, maybe 16 in town, 25 on highway under 75. They are safe, insurance is cheap, they ride fantastic, are very easy to fix. But! Don't think you're going to pay 3000 bucks for a perfect one.. Another thing to keep in mind, if you live in an area where they use salt in the winter, make sure you inspect the frame, they do rust and crack in half due to the channel's in the body holding salt on the frame of cars not winterized, fluid film or some other treatment. Other common issues, plastic intake manifolds cracking, ignition coil issues, ones that weren't maintained tend to need timing chain guides replaced, every 100k miles they need the tuneup, check and make sure the waterpump was replaced at 100k, plugs, coils, rad flush, and new transmission fluid and filter. Otherwise if you maintain them, they'll last forever.

would go buy a new one if they still made them. I for sure do not want a front wheel drive car with no frame. don't want front wheel drive car with a frame. front wheel drive is the most dangerous thing they ever done to cars and they say seat belts are for safety like they care. front wheel drive saves them money, most all of the so called all wheel drives still have front wheels doing the pulling, check for yourself. they are front wheel drive till they start to spin then one of the rear kicks in if your still on the road by then.
