Curator's Corner: Theodore Roosevelt's 1894 Winchester Lever-Action Rifle

Theodore Roosevelt's 1894 Winchester lever-action rifle is examined on this Curator's Corner with John Popp and Phil Schreier of the NRA National Firearms Museum. The rifle is part of the new exhibit on loan from the NPS Sagamore Hill Historic Site, called "Theodore Roosevelt- Trappings of an Icon: The Oval Office of the Summer White House 1902-1908." This particular firearm, designed by John Browning, was used to clear the estate of varmints at Sagamore Hill. While his rifle may not seen unusual or fancy, it does have a little something extra...a threaded barrel. The rifle has its very own suppressor, so as to not disturb the neighbors (the Duponts, the Tiffanys, etc.) he exhibit, Theodore Roosevelt - Trappings of an Icon: The Oval Office of the Summer White House 1902-1908, is currently open to the public at the NRA National Firearms Museum. Also check out 10,000 zoomable pics of 3,000 guns at the museum website, NRAmuseum.com. NRAnews.com (episode aired 5-17-12)

It makes me extra proud to be a American when I hear that President Roosevelt used a suppressed lever action rifle to dispatch varmints.

I gotta wonder how cool it would've been to have had a chance to go hunting with Teddy Roosevelt. Yeah, that's why I need a time machine... LOL! Having watched a number of videos about TR, Patton, and others from the good ol days, I guess custom guns were more the norm, especially if you were from the high end part of town. Both Colt and Winchester turned out some incredible pieces back then.

He points out that the barrel is threaded and the silencer just screws on.

Interupted threads. Take a standard thread pattern they mill clearances on either side of them, your suppressor will slip on and tighten with only a half turn.
