We are waiting on an ID3. It's coming in February apparently. Ordered it in October 2021.

Found your first impressions video helpful as I have one on factory order. Not sure if I read the comment correctly, but is appears a former Tesla Model 3 owner who has one prefers it to the Mode 3. That’s good enough for given the massive price difference. Nice video and tanks lads.

Would love a range test as comparison on the Nissan LEAF E+. I got mine for 28k new and it’s a Tekna (so ProPilot, leather interior, Bose sound system…), with 215bhp and 59kWh usable capacity but FWD.

I looked and sat in the Nissan leafs. The interior space, compared to the tardis like ID3/Born, is poor..

great video as always. it looks for me much better than the ID3 but the capacitative buttons are total rubbish. And the efficiency could still be better but I think it is good enough for 90% of all usage cases :)

I have this car (and had an ID3 before it). Never had a problem with the steering wheel buttons, I guess you get used to them 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@taylorthrall7321 my ID3 had DCC my Cupra doesn’t. I think it’s one of the best options. You can go from too soft to too hard so you can find a happy medium.

I think every review I've seen of the Born or ID3 has mentioned the haptic switches on the steering wheel. What everyone seems to have overlooked is the standard position for both hands on the steering wheel is 10:2 and not 9:3. Indeed if you hold the steering wheel at 10:2 you can feel the shape change to suit the hand position. I've had my Born for 6 weeks and not once have I caught the buttons by mistake and thats with 2000 miles of driving. I don't disagree that the design is not the best but by the same degree it's not the worst design in the world either.

I suppose its the difference between owning a car and reviewing it for a few hours /days A lot of people complain about the tesla model 3 not having a speedo behind the steering wheel but haven't had any issues with it at all (equally we have the new haptic buttons in my partners troc and it's fine once your used to it)

Hand position depends on what you do with the car, for chill rides on a motorway I keep it around 4-6, or even lower and I wonder if the car starts beeping and being unhappy about it.

Put a coat on mate, its pissing it down! We get ours in a few days time and very excited. The whole thing with the haptic buttons on the wheel confuses me. But I have my hands resting slightly higher over the horizontal part so never had the issues on the test drives.

I will look forward to the full ID.3 comparison. When I first got mine [ID.3] in April 2021 I couldn't get within 20 miles of VW's stated range of 263 miles. A couple of months ago I drove two-up to Cornwall and back, and while there I registered 270 miles at 100% charge. A few days after I got back I got 275 miles at 100%. I guess I've learned how to drive my 58kWh/150kW [204bhp] EV. Only took a year of gradual improvements. 😇 Thing is, mine doesn't have the heat pump option, so I mostly heat my seat/steering wheel in the winter, which is fine. But mine is a lease car and that's all they had. From experience I would advise people to get the heat pump option if they can or wear more clothing. The latter doesn't prevent interior surface fogging, so you'll have to turn on the heat at some point. It does work well tbf, but the range takes a hit. Of course, software is the only real bugbear in the ID.3. Even the haptic feedback buttons can be tolerated. I would ask Richard to demonstrate Voice Commands and Sat Nav searching for the giggle. It's a joke that quickly wears thin though.

I have the basic Life Pro ID3 (2022) and I believe the Basic Born ie V1 does not have the vital heated seats and steering wheel. You have to get the V2 to get those. I do the same as you and rarely use the heater or AC but it does make winters so damn cold now. My car was just serviced by VW and they updated the software which has really improved what is displayed on the display screens, however, the voice control has become over sensitive and activates whenever I talk to myself.

@@owrang9756 Just seen your response. I'd forgotten about my original message. So, an update. Last month I came to the end of my lease but extended it for another year, so the ID3 is obviously fine overall. Voice Commands are still laughable, but everything else is ok-ish. There is a battery management program available which makes sure it sticks to 80%, which can be annoying because if you're not rapid charging you can safely and regularly charge to higher percentages anyway. I often override the preset to 90%, although 85% would do. There's no facility for less than 10% increments. Another thing, I feel like there has been some phantom drain introduced, due to the system being on, although it could be my imagination. Efficiency seems to be slightly better these days at 4.5 miles per kW. We're not in the 5 zone but I'm not complaining. For 8-9 months of the year it is an excellent car. For the remaining months it's still a very good car.

Expect less range in the winter by about 15% to 20%. I have had 4.7 m/kwh at 60 mph on the motorway out of my Born (same spec as the tested car). No AC I did 5,2 m/kwh on a short 10 mile trip in July but hot inside the car. You need driving mode B re-gen and long range selected and I was the only person in the car doing Post Office run. Yes switches are annoying but you get used to them. No rear AC vents is also annoying and the rear switch for the rear windows on the drivers door is madness. Very happy with my car but didn't want self parking but there weren't any V2 version cars available without it in June 2022.

For me " real world driving" is to drive efficiently all the time. I drive my ID3 slower than I used to drive my petrol car. I don't go over 60 miles per hour anymore on the motorway and cruise on the left lane. With my mixed motorway/town driving I just did 220 miles for 80% charge and so the remaining 20% would have got me to the 266 mile official range. I usually charge to 80% though.

Decent test. I've found my Born is averaging around the 4.3 mi/kWh ish. So the expected real world is about right, 220 - 225 (58kWh battery) is roughly about right. Sometimes its hinted at may be 240 mile, sometimes 215. The estimates are usually pretty good I've found in the Born. As for the Haptic's yeah they can be annoying, but I've found I've now worked around them. Where I hold the wheel is slightly different and I rarely hit any of those now if ever. Using them becomes second nature too, pretty quickly.

@@taylorthrall7321 no I don't have that extra, that comes with an extra pack I think, probably part of the E-Boost system. From my experience its been one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned. I've not had expensive cars in the past though, so my experience is limited. To some used to luxury, comfortable premium cars it might feel like riding on cobbles ha ha. To me though its great and very smooth. My long trips are super comfy to me.

Cool car! Twice as expensive as expected, and the capacitive wheel "buttons" are for sure a dealbreaker. Neat car but needs to come down in price by half.

Haptic buttons are fine , I’ve never had a problem on my iD3 max , usual reviewers comments that get boring after a while

Things like the placement of the buttons on the steering wheel should’ve install it sorted out well before the car went into production impossible to fix now that the car was implemented until the next version

Have the id3 and the haptic steering wheel is fine after you get used to it. Probably take late a few days. In fact I now prefer it. Driving position for you hands should be higher on the steering wheel anyway. Not on the controls.

Got a Cupra Born on order, delivery some time next year, probably, looks to be a pretty good replacement for my Golf. You raised my two concerns; the haptic steering wheel buttons and the range. I'd hoped "car reviewers" had made a big issue of the buttons, but given your experience... ☹️. Winter range shouldn't be a problem, shortish journeys and then charge up to 80% at home, easy-peazy 😁. But, I am getting concerned about longer journeys in spring/summer/autumn and access to EV charging. Will the number of chargers keep up with the demand of new EVs, or will there be massive queues waiting to get to a charger - spending 20 minutes for a top up at the motorway services is one thing, waiting a couple of hours in a queue just to get to a charger is another ☹️.

@Rudas2007 My Born V3 58kwh + pano roof, arrived early (end of November) which was a pleasant surprise 😁. Really liking the car, although it feels a lot bigger than the Golf even though it is pretty much the same physical size (just more room inside 🙂). So far, the only "issues" I have, the lane assist keeps coming on and you can't switch it off permanently, and the unilluminated heater/volume sliders which you can't see at night ☹️. Getting used to using the touch screen for virtually everything, but would prefer proper buttons and knobs. The haptic buttons on the steering wheel have not been a problem at all 🙂. Only done one long journey, where I had to use public charging (at motorway services), and that ended up working out OK.

The air vents are under the driver and passenger seats for the rear cabin.

Issue here is the hand positioning on the steering. I tend to hold at 10 and 2 vs. 9 and 3 (the steering is thicker at 10 and 2, just saying...). - I'm generally not on a racing circuit. Rented this car for a 200 mile round trip and both my wife and myself weren't annoyed by the buttons on the steering wheel. They do need to get a bit of getting used, which would be the case for most of us with 1 or 2 cars in our households vs. your impressive stable...

I’ve had a cupra born now for 3.5 months , mine was one of the first , 58kwh , currently over 2000 miles and 3.5 months my Long term efficiency is 5.1 mi/kWh lol I don’t drive slow , but I’ve come from previous EVs with much smaller batteries

Looks really nice however the infrastructure needs a massive improvement if this ev green idea is going to work " a bit like hosting a party for 1000 guests but only catering for 500"

As a Golf owner (Mk5 saving for an EV, but probably now will be spent powering one lightbulb this winter) VAG peed me off greatly with the poorly thought out design of some elements of the ID family cars and their relations! Its almost a pity Richard got rid of the GTE so we could compare just what a good infotainment system, steering wheel buttons, buttons (not wafty gestures) to control the aircon, soft touch plastics etc were like only a few years ago! Of course, the e-Golf had all these as well, so it would provide quite a good like-for-like comparison! I wonder who at VW thought that they would spend such a lot of time and money making the wipers almost silent instead of sorting out the real shortcomings!?

That haptic wheel could actually cost you a ticket, or points(!) if you raised the cruise control and didn't notice.

The thing that dropped my range considerably in my Model X, besides hills and running into the wind, was during a hard rain when there was water standing on the highway. I am fairly certain that the added work required for the tires to move the water out of the way was the cause. What has your experience been when in this environment?

does it have heat pump as standard? can you pre condition battery for charging?

If the 58kWh version has a usable range of 207 that is quite low in my opinion, as I’d never drive to 0%. It’s more like 190 usable before range anxiety, and then even lower in winter. I’m so glad I haven’t gone ahead to choose this car.

I ordered one 5 months ago and will receive it in two weeks or so. I live in Northern Europe and let's just say our winters are a bit more hars than yours. I will have no issues traveling with a 58kwh battery. Our charging network has gotten pretty good and if I need to charge once in the winter on a four hour trip, I really don't mind. Not with these gas prices. Everyone wants a 600km range, but you don't need that. Not really.

Yeah that steering wheel just needs a huge rethink. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Really no one pick this up in testing. It’s good looking wee Car can’t wait till batteries go next gen that should be less weight and more density to the pack giving a nice increase in range.

did 3000 km in a week in this car the touch buttons are a getting used to .. what bugs me more is the buggy infortainment .. hangs quite a lot.. (V3.00)

Great insight as usual. Worryingly every review we read about the steering wheel controls across the VW range is always negative yet VW don’t do anything about it. Range is disappointing, as we’re recommended to charge to 80% capacity to protect the battery that equates to 180 miles range in the summer predominantly on A or B roads, less on motorways. If in winter you drop 20% of your summer range your range drops to 145-155 miles. Is that really acceptable on a new modern car? Good looking car though. VW should listen to their customers.

New to looking at ev what your go to Ev?

I found out that VW baterry managment is not reliable. I had ID 4 on test. And returning home after already driving 150 km I had 47 % and was driving 120 kmh on AC and light increase in altitude on AC and in 20 km my % fell from 47 % to 25 %. After going back down and charging to 80 % and did the same route and it only droped 5 %. So it seems that if batterry is more empty % can drop a lot.

What size wheels were they? My e golf was getting 5.3 in the new forest today 👍

The watt is named after James Watt, an 18th-century Scottish inventor... he was a person.....what's why Watt, have a symbol in capital (W) (same as Newton, Volt, Ampere and not meter, hour, kilo ...) So can you please note kWh or kW and not kw or kwh in your subtitles ? I do wish you’d criticise things in cars only after learning to use them correctly. The air vents are fine and work well. The 2 shared window switches for rear and front are actually great. ( on Model 3 I always pressed the rear window button as it was where the front ones would naturally be). I’ve driven 4000 miles in my id4 and can honestly say I’ve not even once pressed a haptic button by accident. On my id4 when using sat nav it literally slows down for junctions, roundabouts etc and all I have to do is steer ( unless no cars in front at say a roundabout when I have to brake the last bit ( weirdly!) The car slows down for corners, it steers around them, it slows down following speed limit changes and also speeds up again for new speed limits. This system is infinitely better than Teslas and in my experience hasn’t had anything like phantom braking. I still think Teslas tech is better overall but the ID4 is a cracking car and I wish you’d not slate it and other cars from its stables without gaining proper experience prior to doing so.

Hang on! I’ve praised id4 plenty and did you not hear… I have an id3 as my wife’s personal car at home and we love it. I’ve said that plenty too. Stop jumping to defensive status without knowing the full truth please. And despite the fact I do love id3 and id4, that haptic buttons are actually just shit. I have to say my opinion, like it or not. But it is only my opinion and that’s why I usually invite comments for owners opinion too!!

I had this car and the 70mph and 65mph makes huge difference, the 65mph gets around 4mi/kwh

The Id program keeps on making manufacturers down one path of cut backs and half measures with the change at the top I really hope we see the Id 3 evolve into e golf quality, gone with the gimmicks , those horrible Haptic Touch buttons , a proper driver screen, and what’s worse the good thing about Id was its lights, but budget cuts nut this with just stock led is poor at night , no matrix option

The M3 has more range, is more efficient, more powerful, has better route planning, a reliable charging infrastructure but you prefer the Cupra. Can I ask about what it is that you prefer with the Cupra? I ask because I’m getting close to ordering a Tesla M3 and could be grateful for your perspective.

@@kevinmills5293 I guess if you don’t need the extra range or power and planning the Cupra is much better built (Tesla app is better too). I had a LR AWD Model 3 and I prefer my Cupra (and the £10k in my pocket) if you often drive over 200 miles get the Tesla if not the Cupra is worth looking at.

In my Born I find visibility is ok. The rear window can feel a bit narrow, the A pillar can be a bit annoying sometimes, but it is split so you can see around it, and the C pillar is quite a large blind spot though.

Does this car have the Heat Pump ?

I've got a cuppa born and I can agree that for the first two weeks the haptic buttons on the steering wheel were annoying but after a couple of weeks I got used to them and now I use them easily. I never miss hit them now. What I will say is poor about the car is the haptic buttons for the climate control and volume for the infotainment system ok during then day but at night they are not lit up and are pretty unusable and you need to use the system itself.

@@taylorthrall7321 I love the car the ride is immense it’s corners beautifully but I will be honest on the odd occasion I am on a poor road surface it is quite noisy but in the year I have had that it probably adds up to about 15 minutes of drive time

I rather see kWh/100km. Mine does 14.8kWh/100. Mostly highway. Got 380km out of it. You're doing metric measure a lot more nowadays in engineering and building (finally) but distance and consumption is still in miles. Why is that?

Really can abide what VW group cars are doing with the Switchgear. Audi still use buttons. Why can't the rest of the group???

Only the 77 kWh battery charges at 130KW, the smaller battery is lower!

Sadly version 3 doesn’t increase the smaller battery to 130Kw only 120Kw and the 77KWh battery goes up to 135Kw. There is a small increase in range as they have released a bit of the buffer!

Being honest with myself, I simply wouldn't be able to live with those capacitive wheel buttons.

This is the sort of car that should be the natural progression for me, having previously had Leons and that sort of size car. Unfortunately I will never buy/rent a car with such god awful controls, both on the steering wheel and the Screen. Give me knobs and buttons!.

Hi Richard. I like the look of the Cupra Born - but hasn't it just been made largely 'redundant' with the launch of the new MG4 EV...???? 51kWh LFP battery + rear-wheel drive... £10,000 cheaper...!! 😉

The MG4 is a definite game changer to be fair. I have a Born so probably bias but I think it looks waaay nicer than the MG4. The MG4 though is still a good looking car and for the prices it's very very good value. The rumoured MG4 Performance coming next year will be interesting... 77kWh battery and 0 - 60 in less than 4 seconds! that will be a proper hot hatch. ;)

To expensive mg will blow it out the water!

To bad this car will never come to America even Canada!

Nearly 35K for a car that has a range of 150 miles full charge on the motorway really.

I Like the look of the Cupra, especially the wheels! However -- *You have to be brave to buy a non-Tesla BEv* A mass of different apps, credit cards and leads needed just to make a long journey. Why bother ? What benefit is there ? It’s baffling.

Nah, Apps are useful, but most are contactless that I use.

Why do so many people have an opinion on the so called bad points when they don’t have any real experience using the car in question? The Tesla live affair is spoiling this channel as they are NOT as good as made out to be. Parking, summon, phantom braking, failing to negotiate corners, not speeding up at speed gates etc etc. Teslas a brilliant but other cars are as good overall.Yes the VW group software is unfinished and address search function utterly broken but in my case the id4 is a really comfortable and well built car to drive. All cars have niggles but most don’t slam the brakes on for a shadow or a white lorry! Lecture over but please take heed as you are beginning to sound like the petrol heads who make crap up to slate evs. I know someone who got a refund for FSD because he proved it was crap.

I’m hardly a blinkered Tesla fan boi! 1. I have a Vw Id.3 at home as mainly my wife’s car. 2. I will show Tesla when they do wrong such as self parking (see other video). But 3. Tesla despite their fault do also do a lot of things very right and I will praise them for that. Don’t be defensive

What a boring car, at least the colour matches its personality lol. I'd consider it if it was actually cheap and electric wasnt so expensive now .. I'll be sticking to my 70mpg Honda civic for a while longer.

Actually I think all cars are boring unless you take them on a race track so I'm not really bothered now days it's just transport and I'll go with whatever makes financial sense, I've had fast cars but just found I was still just going the same speed as all the test of the traffic that clogs up the UK roads. I love 2 wheels and off road for my fix of speed and fun. Tbh if this car was cheap enough to buy and run I'd get it.

@@FlyingFun. a TypeR wouldn’t get 70mpg 🤣. I had an ID3 before this, I paid £34,400 for it, after 12 months and 14k miles I straight swapped it for a Born V2 E-Boost Tech L (£38,800 list price). So EV’s are cheap as the demand is going up quicker than supply. Since 2019 this is my 4th brand new EV and from what I paid for them to what I sold them for I’ve made £4k. I know at some point this bubble will burst but it’s fun so far! If it carries on I’m going for a Berlin Model Y or Ioniq 5 next year. 😜

@@scottwills4698 crazy times when cars make you money ( or money Ius being printed out of existence lol ). But it would be my luck that the bubble would burst just after I bought an ev . My civic is a diesel "sport" lol, I could be mapped to give a LOT more power/torque but my wife drives it 99% of the time and she's better off without it lmfao, I paid 8k for it 5 years or so ago from a dealer and now the same year and model is being sold for 12k, but you need to buy another car which is equally over priced. We hardly do any miles anyway so mpg etc really isnt that much of an issue. I would love an ev next though as long as it makes financial sense with cost of electricity going up , probably should of done it earlier and profited like you did but hey ho.

I'm sorry, but the more I look at the Cupra, the worse I think it looks. The front is absolutely disgusting, even the ID3 looks nicer!

Now try driving with your hands at 10 to 2 on the steering wheel!!!🤔
