As a carpenter of 18 years i started to use a company for my cut lists 5 years ago and never looked back, although i tend not to tell the customer unless they ask 😆 im slowly getting into CAD which i think adds a big touch of professionalism in the design and conference with client, as well as making the designs perfectly understandable for all. Enjoyed the vid thanks, i'm also based in twickenham 😊

Great for bespoke sizes, but has to be more expensive than kitchen carcass suppliers. I have used Mereway carcasses with my own doors, super quality.

Very nicely done. I tend to level and fit a sub base and plinth that the carcasses can then just be dropped on to rather than individual but each to their own. The other difference I’ve gone to is ditching the push to open closure and drilling a 10mm hole in the edge of the carcasses. Just slightly less clutter on the carcasses.

This is exactly what a certain other channel was showing(media wall mdf)and I made the point about building/ordering carcasses like this and was laughed at. Quality work as usual, working smarter, not harder.

Hi Robin, many thanks as always for sharing ur expertise, am in awe of your carpentry skills throughout ur other videos , funny enough I’ve been looking building some simple shelving carcass for tool storage out of MDF , bought a trend biscuit cutter and pocket hole jig and was trying to search through ur videos of what u recommend as I’m convinced u once done a video of what’s the best way to join MDF , ie, biscuits or pocket hole, etc , am a retired heating engineer and just been trying to teach myself extra skills in order to build base shelving units, cupboards etc for a very simple workshop , as I’ve collected a good range of tools over the years , once again a million thanks for taking the time sharing an insight into ur world of carpentry as it’s extremely appreciated , have a great week

Looks fantastic Robin, great video as usual. You may have seen them but Blum now do a push to open that is drilled into the carcass itself rather than a clip. You install them with a Blum jig and gives a very slick finish if they are at eye level.

Used them recently, think the jig was around £25.I was a bit unsure at first but they work well.

I was interested in seeing how you worked around the baseboard. I think you said you were going to fix them (the cabinets) to the wall even though they were low enough not to need it. Furring strips? And I couldn’t see what you did for the vertical ends without a face frame to scribe. Interesting challenges.

Done same with some Billy bookcases to get the socket through the back of the bookcases - reinforced with 6mm mdf behind the flimsy Billy back

Interesting, have been considering going this way for a while. I will say it's not as cheap as £400 material becoming £500. Quote on 3 'standard' size wardrobes carcasses (sides and back panel) and doors with just hinge holes drilled is closer to £1500, delivered, compared to £500 materials (rough figures). Saves a lot of time and dust, less hassle then cutting on site and a lot of costs saved having a workshop. For me it's probably worth it peak season but not so much when times are quiet... but will give it a bit more thought Cheers for the video

This for me depends on the material used, in the case of these cupboards there is no way I could produce them on site without specialist tools such as the Festool edge bander etc the amount of edge banding on all the components would take days!! This material worked out about £350 per cupboard supplied, cut, fabricated for assembly including the ironmongery etc, maybe with MDF it maybe comparable but not the high end materials such as this??

Lovely job as always, being a bit pedantic though, technically the socket isn't in a fire proof enclosure any more, Some sparkies might be a bit squeaky about that.

Thanks Robin, great video with lots of tips. I'm a handyman and this type of project is what i enjoy but i think I'll use cutrights for the next one. Btw an idea for another video would be to take us though how you design a project like this. I bet there are a ton of little tips/tricks that help make sure the cutlist will work when you come to assembly.

This is exactly what I was thinking too Eric. Even the most basic video would be so useful, as getting the order in their system is probably the most daunting part. I was just about to start designing and building a large built-in cupboard in my lounge, and was starting to design and price up, but this video has made me stop and consider if this wouldn't be a much better way. Thanks for sharing Robin!

We have a number of companies that do that in Australia. Carpenters on site rarely make anything. The norm is that these companies that do all the prep. Usually employ installers as well. So the site carpenters don't even touch this sort of thing. It was like that when I got here 25 years ago. The big problem at the moment is no product. All the makers are struggling with a dire shortage of sheet goods. I have a job ongoing. No idea when I will see a kitchen. The customers are camped in their own home. Have been for weeks. Can't tell them anything.

I have noticed here in Melb that we are being inundated with pre made Chinese kitchens. They are cheap and are putting many kitchen companies out of business. However I think fingers have been burnt by the quality and issues when things don't fit as its then a long wait for any replacements.

This has really given me a lot more confidence to try building cabinets, especially out of mdf, if they can tape the edges. How much smaller smaller than the carcasses do you make the doors to allow clearance?

Usually they’re 4mm smaller

I'm now thinking of all the time I've spent over the years altering standard size units or spending hours cutting sheets of materials in a customer's driveway, and the amount of clothes irons I've burned through 😖 The next bedroom or kitchen job I price I'm going to compare the cost of this kid of supplier against my usual method, Imagine it, a couple of hours making detailed measurements could produce a bespoke kitchen that can be fitted in a fraction of the usual time.

Glad you covered another one of these types of project - When I watched your old ones on the Capel build with the sheet goods supplied, cut and edged by CutWrights (if I remembered the name correctly) it really sparked my interest in using them (or someone like them) to put together a kitchen and some fitted wardrobes. Which brings me to my question: do you have to prepare them with full 3D or CAD type files (for example for kitchen carcasses) for all the boards to specify where all the screw and dowel holes and rebates etc go, or do they have any standard templates which you can use for putting your orders together? I was going to give them a call, but having watched this newer video now I thought I might just ask you instead (if you don’t mind). Obviously there are full blown design software packages out there that can produce detailed cut lists and design files, but they are crazy expensive for just a few jobs and, after I saw you hint at your techno-phobia for some things it made me wonder how you’d put together your orders for say all the carcasses for full kitchens or sets of wardrobes. Really appreciate any help or ideas you may have on this. Cheers 👍

Hi Stephen, in short.... I do not use any software and I rely heavily on the team at Cutwrights who only get a dimensioned sketch from me!!! then between us we get to the nitty gritty of the designs etc and then it is produced, i really wish I had the patience and time to learn some software but yep, my techno phobia an time is holding me back!

@@ukconstruction That’s brilliant and, to be fair was really the answer I was hoping for! I’m pretty honest about my geeky side and have tried a number of times to get into designing things using software (which I’m generally pretty good with IT) but, unless it’s something you use really often, I must say I find it hard to remember my way around when using it and things take too long and have mistakes in them. I guess it’s something you’ve got to commit to and stick at until it becomes more second nature (like any new skill). Anyway it’s a relief to hear the guys at Cutwrights are able to help with the technical design details - I suppose they must have some templates or enough experience to know how most standard carcasses are cut and put together. I think the only way I’ll find out is to pull something together and give them a bell. I’ll tell them Robin said they’d be able to help with the missing details! 😂 Anyway, really appreciate your help. Cheers, Steve 👍

Great video showing the different options available for cabinetry now. I may have missed it in the footage but what was the company you used. Also is there a plinth on the front 7nder the cabinets. I think I heard you mention something about it bit couldn't see one at the end. Thanks for the work you put out.

Hi Sean, the link to the company is in the video description, the plinth is set back as a shadow gap about 25mm you can see it from a low level but it is not visible on the video, there is an image of the long pieces that form the plinth in the early part of the video when the parts are laid out on the floor, glad you like my content mate!!

and you even cut around the skirting board! 😂

I would love to have seen the top, was it all 1 length or in sections?

this was in 2 exact pieces so the join was dead centre of the middle unit lining through with the centre of the middle pair of doors

Could you give some information on how you come up with the design and cut list and what you provide to the company? Is there a standard fixing position?

So much strength in the dowels and the screws there really is no need for glue

Did you consider removing the part of the skirting board to the right of the cabinets, to stop papers dropping down the gap? Also, did you cut cable management holes to connect the TV to the sockets (seems a bit of a shame!)…?

These are by Smart systems, I like the sliders as there is less metal than a bifold so the veiw is uninterrupted, also they do not block any of the walk way when open etc

So you design your own cabinets and basically get them IKEA'd into flat packs for you. Great for profit maximization but not really for anything made from nice materials.

Sometimes spray finish or an Egger board that comes in RAL colours

So, a bit like buying a pack from Ikea, although perhaps of better quality?

Master at work what's the name of the company you use to pre cut all your wood, I'm not a carpenter but I like to put my hand at most stuff and want to build a understairs cupboard/ draws and thought it might be worth this company precutting all the wood for me. Thanks Robin

I think in some ways a lot still make them from scratch as that’s what carpentry is. If you buy them in and construct them then you a glorified furniture assembler 😂 but time is money nowadays I suppose

These are a standard lay on Blum hinge so the door over laps the carcass side by the full amount

I fitted up to the skirting then there is a scribe that fits between the last cupboard and the wall

Hi David, the tv equipment is all in the centre cupboards, my tv is only 1 tiny cable that is in a wall duck and comes out behind the tv, i have two lamps on the top, one at each end and I drill a nice clean 10mm hole and feed the lamp cable into the cabinet then re fit the plug

Hi Robin, wondering if this would work as a floating cupboard system by fixing to the back wall, and raising them up 8-12 inches, giving a float effect? Would the weight be an issue?

Absolutely the weight would be an issue. The backs aren't structural in this example, so you'd have no chance. Very different design for the cabinets required, but it would be theoretically possible. Perhaps a cleat system could be employed for that to work well.

That's for a small plastic fitting so the door's don't bang if you don't have a soft close hinge hope that helps 🔨
