    When you over build mounts you will never have to be concerned about a failure. Well done. Something I always wanted to learn is Tig welding. I have done industrial Mig and Stick welding for years. I own a Miller Mig with an aluminum spool that works incredibly well for a small welder. As always just a hint of sexual innuendo in every video just enough to get a chuckle 🍻

    Thanks! The front mounts weren't quite what I envisioned, but I was having a bit of a hard time with metal supply. Surprisingly Vancouver is considerably more difficult to find damn near everything than Victoria. I am happy with the results though. I do likely machine. I have some gas for the mig side now as well so may be using it more. Glad we can keep you entertained! Until next time!

    Had thyroidectomy (at least 20 years ago) and was in the hospital for 3-4 days after surgery! Not fun, but glad I did it! I think I noticed that you have a fresh scar there, I’m surprised you are up and about and so active. Wonderful!

    I can't even imagine having to stay in a hospital that long after a surgery. Its miserable even for a day! At this point it has not been all that long since the surgery. She is very good at keeping it covered up though so the scar can heal.

    Nice work. Hard to imagine those Cummins will be powerful enough to power that big yacht. They look miniscule compared to the big honking 12 cylinder prior powerplants.

    Thanks! It's pretty wild imagining but it's all in the math. Tangaroa is a big boat but not a fast boat. If you don't need to go fast your power requirements drop exponentially. That being said, the Cummins 6.7 marine engines are rated to a max of 550HP and 1250 ft/lbs. The Detriots we had were rated at 458hp and 1200 ft/lbs. Eighty years of technological advances go a long way.

    ​ @OnboardTangaroa Iagree.. Those Cummins are overkill if anything not underpowered! Care to elaborate what's your typical cruising speed? Did you consider smaller ones? Would 2x 200HP not have been enough?

    Typical cruising speed is 9 knots. We could have gotten away with less engine but these are easy to find and have fantastic parts availability.

    looking at the outro, the vessel has very clean lines cutting through the water, hardly any wash, it will be interesting to see her cruising with the new engines.

    We are traveling pretty slowly in the outro but even at cruise speed the disturbance is minimal compared to many boats we have seen.

    The overall project is cool enough but the fab work is the icing on the cake as we would all like to do a project like this in our mind but we lack the vision and skill. STill cant get over the size difference in the engines.

    Dang, do clamp the pieces when drilling with the drillpress! Easy to lose fingers and / or mash hands trying to grab the now spinning piece. I didn't want to watch that... Anyway, what a fabulous boat! Too interesting all the permutations of how it is currently configured, and how you are managing that.

    I sometimes clamp if the holes are big enough or the drill press is powerful enough. I wasn't too worried in this case as the belts would slip if it grabbed. Glad you are enjoying the videos! Plenty more to come!

    @@OnboardTangaroa I hope it does change the handling to much! Very interested in the fuel burn and cruising speed you achieve! I hope you nail the props and transmissions first try! Been there done that and as you probably know, can get expensive when your in your prop size!!

    It shouldn't adversely affect the handling. The weight was removed forward and the boat has always had a bit of a nose down push underway. We are expecting around a 34% reduction in fuel burn based on bsfc numbers of the Detroits vs the Cummins. Hoping to get the pitch right first try as well. Not too keen on having to come out of the water again any time soon.

    I haven't really done much looking into them. I do have a hull potential meter onboard though and I do check it regularly. The yacht I work on does have some sort of a more advanced system. It measures potential and actually adjusts hull potential through an anode. I am not sure of the specifics but it seems to work.

    Not really. The Detroits were the least powerful of all the 12v-71's. I think they were rated somewhere around 400HP . Of that 400 we have only ever demanded about 120HP. The new engines, while capable of 400HP will be derated to around 300HP. That still leaves enough for our original demands plus gobs extra for emergencies. Any additional power we had with the Detroits would have been completely unusable.

    You have it correct. Derating them basically just reduces maximum engine load and is a function of the programming in the ecu. The benefits are just reduction in wear and tear. We could do the same just by "keeping our foot out of it" as well.

    So is the bare aluminum a new style or just a preference! What will you have to do to keep it protected?

    The bare aluminum is a preference for us but most of the fishing boats up here in the Pacific Northwest leave the hulls bare. It may not be as "attractive" as paint but you don't have any maintenance to protect the aluminum. It will form an oxide layer by itself which inhibits further corrosion.

    What is the different specs between the old Detroit 12v71s and the Cummins inline 6 cylinder 6.7 liter replacements? What is the Hp and torque output of the engines and how much is the weight change between the two? How much slower are the Cummins re-power units going to push the boat at both cruise and top speed for when you need to make a dash top speed run for any reason? I expect your Cummins fuel consumption will be between 40% and 60% less than the Detroits at the same hull speed.

    The Detroits were rated at 456HP and 1200ft/lbs with a 2:1 gear ratio. The new engines will likely be around 300 HP and 860 ft/lbs with a 3:1 ratio. The 12v-71's weigh around 4900 lbs. The Cummins should be in the 1750 lb range. The Cummins engines won't push the boat any slower than the Detroits as both engines far exceed the hull speed power requirements. My fuel burn calculations are showing around a 34% reduction in fuel consumption at our cruise speed. The sea trial will tell all. Looking forward to getting it all done. Are you going to need to do new meta center, center of buoyancy, center of gravity and stability testing and are calculations with all the significant weight changes and locations you’re doing? That’s not an insignificant amount of weight and mass changes you’re making. Are you going to offset the changes with additional tankage and storage?

    Not planning on any stability calculations. I'm more of a visual thinker. I know the location and weight of all of my tankage. That weight is akin to having one of our three skin tanks empty. My thought was to build a few seawater ballast tanks in the bilge of the engine room. That way we can pump the water in as we need additional ballast. We also still have one generator and a few batteries going into the engine room. It should be able to offset the weight removed from the Detroits or at least close. Tangaroa is inherently fairly stable as there isn't a lot of weight up top and the hull is progressively and substantially thicker from the chine down.

    For percentages I just took the data from both the detroit and cummins bsfc charts which list lbs/hp/hr for each engine at known rpm ranges. At our 1000RPM cruise area the Detroits are literally off the chart for low bsfc. Judging by the curve they would be sitting in the .48lb/hp/hr range. The Cummins with the new 3:1 gearboxes would be closer to the 1500 RPM range and show around .32lb/hp/hr. You can just determine the fuel burn difference from there.

    I was twitching watching Janis use an electric die grinder without safety glasses 🫣 Aluminum chips flying everywhere 😲 Somebody needs to give that girl a slap on the wrist or she might like a spanking better lol. Have a discussion about PPE. Yeah, I'm guilty about not using gloves or ear muffs. I sure don't screw around with eyes. Safety squints don't cut it. I've never tig welded before, we didn't do it in our shop or have one in our shop. With those engine mounts, I'd burn them in with 7018. I know some would say mig weld them. I don't trust wire feed welding. I want something to hold stick welding with 7018 it is. I know guys will argue that mig strong, yeah, I call bullsh*t. I know my welds hold the proof is in the pudding. The shaft couplers that come off the detroits talk about overkill 😂 I think you are going to notice a difference in quicker response when it comes to slow speed maneuvers. You won't be waiting for all that rotational mass to slow down or visa versa. You may miss it when cruising, the boat is prolly close to 1000lbs lighter maybe more.

    Lol, when I watched the video before Janis posted my first comment was "You know someone is going to mention the lack of safety glasses". There may or may not have been a spanking later😁. Funny, I have been to the hospital twice to have small bits of metal removed from my eyes. Both times I was wearing safety glasses. Never had to go to the hospital when I forgot to wear safety glasses. Coincidence or. ???😂. I do love tig welding. It is so peaceful compared to slag flying everywhere. Its very similar to oxy/acetylene welding but cleaner. I have a fair bit of mig experience but absolutely no stick experience. Tig is pretty much my go to. It is just unfortunately very slow. The boat is actually 6000 lbs lighter without the Detroits. Will need to do some ballast work for sure.

    Hopefully I won't be getting any saltwater up on my engine mounts! If you go through our past videos you will hear me harping about dissimilar metals on board. They actually used COPPER for fuel lines on board. You can visibly see everywhere one of those lines was touching the aluminum.
