The 12valve is the perfect size and weight for my '78 Bronco. Fit like a glove.
A 6BT with a 24V head and P-pump makes for one of the best setups. I had a ISB 01 5.9L that I ran a modified vp44 pump with the 285 hp RV injectors with a HX35/40 hybrid turbo. Sadly it was a 53 block and I was limited to how far it could be pushed before the notorious block cracking.
Great video gives me all the measurements i need to know about a motor that i'm interested in using at a later date.
Dude, I was wondering if you're as mad as your hair. This video proved that 100% 👌 👏 💯 Well done. Going forward we desperately need people like you around to push things forward. Well done again.
The Cummins may be much heavier than the OM606 they're solid and would be a nice reliable option for the Patrol. Can thank its industrial roots for the inter changeable bell housings and its reliability.

That’s a great motor. I used to drive a ten tonne Leyland Roadrunner with the non turbo version fitted. Only about 120 horsepower but would pull down to just over idle speed without protest. I drove a later Daf 55 with the 180 horsepower ‘BT’ version. And again, great motor. I hope the gearbox and axles of the Patrol are as strong as you alluded to as the 6BT produces a minimum of 400lbs ft of torque (depending on state of tune) at around 1500-1600rpm. I’d think he’d need to do something with the gearing anyway as it’s a much lower revving motor than the one he’s taking out. I wish him the best of luck with his project 😊

Had many a patrol from pushrod 4.2’s 4.8’s petrols, 4.2 and 3.0 diesels, and many a 4 and 6BT, but never married 🤓… both great 👍🏻 I had a HAMM 10 ton roller with a 6BT, blew the head gasket, couldn’t get a top end set, so I de-laminated the steel and sandwiched it with white bathroom silicone, ran for another 3 years after 😂 testimony to the head and block strength 👌🏻😎

Welcome to America. These are the most sought after diesels. With a p-pump these are unstoppable. They have been swapped into many other makes of trucks. When they are in a Ford they are called a fummins. Heavy but damn near indestructible except for the dreaded killer dowel pin problem, which is an easy 1.00 dollar fix. Tuned correctly these engines will go 700,000+ miles before a refresh.

I think the customer will regret this. 410kg without accessories so its well over half a ton once in they engine bay that will make the car a pain to drive and put unnecessary load on the front axle. There is a reason this engine went into a DAF lorry while the Patrol got much lighter and smaller engines. These are two different worlds colliding.
Little tip for swapping a cummins in to anything, buy a fake polystyrene cummins engine that weighs 35 pounds, that way you dont have to wrestle around 900 pounds of iron, and you can pick it up and move it around by hand, $1000 dollars, resell it after you are done or keep it for the next project. Worth every penny

@@g__wizz even a blown up cummins is worth quite a bit where I'm from, I'd say cheapest is gonna be 500 for a core. And I think bare block is over 200 pounds, maybe more. @@townsendliving9750 plastic engine blocks are for nerds. if you do this stuff enough, you would rather spend 1000$ on a core motor for parts. how much moving around do you do with an engine swap lol.. you center it/position it and set drive line angle.. thats really about it.
About the ZD30, if you get a bigger exhaust, intercooler, manual glowing or override the afterglow with a switch on the realy and dawes and needle valve kit for it, they can actually last! The main problems of them are the 5min after glowing so the glowplug tip falls down and fks the piston up and the stock turbo pressure control is just a laugh, they can overboost like you cant believe!!
@ChevyConQueso
Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a candidate for a glow plug delete. Cummins actually did not put glowplugs on the 6BT/12 valve because they felt a grid heater was just as effective. Glow plugs do seem to work better for vee engines though, but I'd try the grid heater for sure if catastrophic damage was on the horizon. Grid heaters are super easy to add to something.

Nice project and a great engine for the project. I’d recommend a 4BT engine instead, it’s far easier to install, compared to the 6BT. But then again, a 4BT produces 2/3 of the power of a 6BT, so if it’s a question of power, then use a 6BT.

What changes are you going to make to the BT6 will you be changing the fuel pump and turbo. I am interested in this project as I have a 6bt which was a stationery engine it has a Bosch in line fuel pump the motor is the same as yours a 12valve Cummins but has the after cooler so is a 6BTA. The Fuel injector pump is a Bosch F002 A0Z 379 PES6A95D320RS2000 The Engine is going into a 4X4 Oka which is and Australian built 4x4 current Engine is a Perkins Phaser which lacks power on the highway. when I found your web site I started to question engine options when you show you can get over 600HP from a Mercedes car engine which would be a lot lighter than a Cummins. This application we need more HP and lots of low down torque.

The hate for the ZD30 comes from the miss-informed and lazy..... Simple mods, the make reasonable power, reliable and not bad on the juice. Shame a Diesel Pump guy couldn't do something with their only limit, the POS VP44 pump..... The 5-9 has great note but showing its age and weighs a crap-load. Not a huge conversion market is Aus like claimed in another comment due to the amount of mods and making is legal. LS's are way more common. Crikey, local down here charging well over 30 grand (AU$) for a 4-pot cummins. The OM606 is better option but prices of them took off with being popular. Sticking with me ZD30 for a long while yet, done well over 400+ thousands K's and still strong.

It is the same engine so the 2 names are interchange. The 6 in 6bt means it's a 6 cylinder, the B means it's part of the B series family of engines, and the T means it's turbocharged. That's exactly what the 12 valve is.
This engine is far too heavy for the Patrol. There are much better options available, why the customer would not choose an OM606 is weird. A good option is the Isuzu 4JJ1 which fits nicely and can make plenty of power. Then again, a Patrol CRD engine with an Eclipse Turbo (Aussie developed) and remap will be by fat the cheapest way to get significant power. You won't break the ZD30 bottom end easily. You will blow holes in the pistons of the DI version, but that's because of Nissan's insanely bad fuel and boost control. The DI head isn't the best either. All OK in the CRD, although factory fuelling is still not industry best practise.

Haaaaa Volvo is regarded as the best heavy truck manufacturer.... My D16 would spend 10 of every month with the mechanics. It apparently was homesick often. Most fleets that I know that use them can't keep them out of the shop. That's why we run so many old non-emissions trucks in Canada's oil and gas sector. It's better to rebuild the old trucks every 5 years, than lose money on fixing the new ones monthly and lose the downtime revenue and contracts.
