Culvert Cistern Install - catching rain off the Shop!

Installing a culvert cistern to catch rainwater off the shipping container shop roof. I go over the basic steps of the formwork, pouring the concrete, setting the cistern and running the gutters, plumbing and the overflow. It's a bit of work but I think the effort result in one of the coolest looking cisterns/tanks you could have sitting by your house... if you're into that kinda thing;)
Here are the links to the other videos I mentioned and the Culvert Cistern video course that Derek (DIYhomesteadprojects) and I put together on installing one of these unique looking cisterns.

    Joe, great project. Since you were using good PVC pipe with glued joints you could have gone underground with your fill pipes and come up from the bottom. That way fewer of your pipes are exposed and leveling from gutter to tank is un-important. You could also be further from the shop. Thanks for the video. Greg B.

I thought i was off scott free this time ;)

    I really like the cistern ! I have no idea why I had it in my head that it was a buried in-ground cistern... Sorry I sorta rushed through my first response... Lets see... Mad Scientist... Bury a 4" pipe full length at 90 degrees to the overflow and tie it to it... Cap both end... Drill 1" holes about 8" apart in the top... Cover the holes with burlap... Cover the pipe with a thick layer of firewood... Then 8 or 10" of dirt... Then you will have a Hugelkulture (spelling) bed with the wood acting like a sponge, and the pipe (with the holes at the top) acting as a back-up 4" reservoir roots will find eventually... Or the humidity will feed... CAUTION - since this is a drinking water source, a check valve would be in order, just to avoid even the notion of a bacterial backflow...

  • @homesteadonomics

    @homesteadonomics

    6 жыл бұрын

    lol... that's more like it! Hugelkulture it is... or maybe a living roof with an aquaponics set up in the tank...lol..jk... but actually I have thought of doing one of these with a much wider diameter 4' culvert to act as a fish pond... but the concrete of that size diameter would negate the cost benefit... but still cool ;) lol... you spur good brainstorming in me :)

  • @BumbleBeeJunction

    @BumbleBeeJunction

    6 жыл бұрын

    You could skip all the piping... Dig a trench... Line it with one of your vinals... Run your overflow into it like a pond... Make a overflow gap in the liner at one end... Back fill it with firewood... Then cover with the 8 or 10 inches of dirt... Still a hugelkulture (sp) bed but with a lined reservoir, little risk of backflow, and no additional piping... I can see it working just as well....

    LED seed warming mats can also be used to cover a small clay pot then placed down on a large clay saucer with a larger clap pot with a notch in its lip for the electrical cord placed over it to create low voltage warmers you can operate off a solar panel set up to heat a workshop trailer home or green house.

    Forgot to mention, you might want to place a 'plug' on one side of the lifting points on that container and fill the corner with spray foam being careful not to let it overflow too much from the open side. This will prevent wasps and hornets from building their nests in there. Learned from experience ! Foam can then be trimmed and painted to match. If using a solvent based paint try priming the foam with several coats of a water based moisture sealant then use your regular solvent based paint on top. Great videos! I am using a military comm shack as my workshop. Bought it used and it came complete with AC and DC power hookups as well as an ECU rated at 45000 BTU's. main problem is that it needs three phase power to run. At least the lights work!

    That's a great idea.. I have been thinking about it because I know it's only going to be a matter of time before the birds, wasps, bees, etc, start to take up show in there. And your shop... that sounds really cool!! I think I've seen those on public surpus .com from time to time. Really cool option as a shop... espcially with teh options it comes with !! :) Joe

  • @Subgunman

    @Subgunman

    The Comm trailer came with some of the shelves that held radio gear. They used shallow Unistrut channel laid in horizontally along the length of the container every two feet from base to ceiling so shelves could be positioned as needed. Four inch steel wire duct was run horizontally above lower Unistrut shelf support providing multiple 120 vac sockets as well as the military Cannon connectors for 28vdc power for radio gear. They use a custom made SquareD power panel that has three separate systems in one, 3Ø 120 vac 60 Hz, 3Ø 120vac 400 Hz, and 28 vdc. Power inputs are monitored by a meter panel that can be switched between the phases for both 60 and 400 Hz inputs with volt meters and cycle meters for each input. DC monitoring is via two tip style jacks that you can stick any multimeter probe into ( this is something I want to change by adding an on board meter. The DC power supply is based on a HUGE 3 phase transformer and rectifier pack with average size capacitors for filtering. This is fed by the 400Hz input. It takes a lot less effort and filtering to convert the multiphase 400Hz input to DC. Massive problem I have encountered is the slides that the ECU SST on are rusted and need to be replaced as well as the hinges on one of the two doors were seized and broke when they were forced open.

    I wonder if the top of the cistern could be designed in order to catch more rainwater? I love the sound of that word...RAINWATER. Here in San Francisco, California as well as pretty much the entire state of California it has been dry and drought like. There was some heavy rain in the springtime that brought early snowmelt and last weekend we got a thunder storm. And just one more thing, "I'm just singing in the rain, singing in the rain". Great video Mr. Homesteadeconomics.

    Interesting to see culvert cistran rain collectors. Been awhile to see it again. You can take a warm bath with sun heating the water.

    I like em a lot.... but believe it or not, they don't really heat up the water much at all. too much volume when full to make a change. the dark poly tanks warm up the water more.

    What's the head pressure on this. I planted 80 fruit trees in my pasture and want to run irrigation off of one of these I need atleast 7 pounds of head pressure for my drip system to the trees, do you think it will work or do I have to run power to a pump?

    I am a retired plumber and rule number one is never ever use galvinized pipe as it will form rust scale on the inside and eventualy be blocked with rust. Donald

    Are there particular reasons why you went with a culvert tank instead of one of the various plastic tanks that so many use?

    I'm going to google it, but going to ask anyway. Does anyone know how long to store/cycle the water out?? I'm just curious, since you wouldn't do that for well water, if you would need to do it for stored water. However, I'm assuming that well water is not stagnant and somehow "moves".

    yes, there is a lid on there. My buddy who I got the culvert from had a custom one made by an HVAC company. Not really a mosquito concerne with the lid on:)

    thanks! yes, the prices range greatly. Here the cost is about on par until about 1500 gal... then poly tanks become a better value. but I also, just love the look of these too ;)

    This might have already been addressed, but I'd just be curious if you guys had flooding plans. I mean anything over a quarter meter of water you'd be standing in. (I'm realizing why the metric system sounds so weird, heh) We had a situation like that in Korea in '86 during a monsoon. We sandbagged our place and it worked surprising well. But there was as much as a good 3 or 4 hundred centimeters of water or so you would have to slog through in some places. In Seoul.

    Nice cistern. We are working on an off grid property. Making the adjustment from grid life to off grid has been challenging. I would like to install an underground cistern to use with my well. Do you have to treat the water in the cistern if it is coming from a well? How often do you have to get inside the tank and clean it?

  • @homesteadonomics

    @homesteadonomics

    I usually clean my tanks once a year. as for treating the water from a well... that all depends on the quality of your well water. some don't and some folks do. Hope that helps:)
