The "Mutterpass" is just great. Doctors here in Germany recommend to take it with you all the time. A few months ago I passed out at a Oktoberfest around 18 weeks pregnant. The first aid attendant asked for my Mutterpass. This immediately gave him all the important information in an emergency situation. Luckily everything went well and the baby and I are healthy.

Love your videos! I just returned to work after staying home with my baby boy for 12 months while receiving 65% of my salary every month (called Elterngeld in Germany). In total, you can get up to 14 months of paid parental leave in Germany when you and your partner take time off, plus 100% for the 6 six prior to giving birth. And giving birth here in Germany does not cost you anything, no matter what kind of birth it is! All the best to you and your growing family! I hope you're enjoying this very special time!

Mutterpass is very helpful. You are adviced to carry it with you all the time. It is not always obvious if the woman is pregnant or not. If something happens, the persons helping you can open your purse and find the Mutterpass. They will know you are pregnant and there will be all information about your pregnancy.

So interesting to hear about all the differences in Germany and the US. I live in Austria, which has got quite a similar healthcare system than Germany. Femibion is the most recommended pregnancy vitamin here. They are not cheap though 😔 Luckily I got a few sample packs for free from my doctor because the pharmaceutical sales reps provided him with a lot of free samples and he was happy to give them to his pregnant patients 😃👍🏻 Here in Austria we also have the Mutterpass and we have 3 ultrasound appointments (for every trimester) and the glucose test. Mine was very pleasant (orange flavour). Up to the birth I had the same gynecologist, but for the birth you don’t know you will be there in the delivery room. When your labour starts you go to the hospital and who ever is there is there. Most of the time you don’t see a doctor at all, because midwives take care of you during birth. The only time you see a doctor is after giving birth (if they have to stitch you up) or if there are birth complications or if you want an epidural. Midwives are the ones that deliver the babies here in Austria not the doctors. Hope that you have a safe delivery and a good birthing experience in the birthing center you chose.

There are two different glucose-tests available in germany (third intervention/option is self-measuring the bloodsugar, forth: not doing it) - she did the "big" test where you can't eat before and blood is taken 2-3 times at a doctors office. As a midwife I offered the pre-test (can be done at every time of the day and my brand had a taste) which, if abnormal, leads to another "big" one and a diagnosis. This was just an overview, for accurate medical information and advise in the individual situation please ask your own provider ;)

❤ I really enjoyed hearing about your perspective, especially as I’m pregnant myself, also in Germany. Actually it is rather unusual to take the 2h test without having done the much shorter pre-test where you do get a drink to take at home. As for the flavour: In my last pregnancy in 2021 I got a nice grape juice. This time, the nurse explained that the insurance companies no longer pay for the juice, that’s why they now give you powdered sugar in water. 😬

I've had a lot of gynecological exams lately, both at my OBGYN's office and at the hospital, and at neither place they had this little corner for changing. I just sat down somewhere and took my clothes off. First, it was a bit strange (especially when one of the doctors was a man), but I mean, they see half-naked women all the time. So I decided to look at it all from a medical point of view and got used to it. After a while, it was no big deal anymore. Clothes off, sit down, ultrasound in ... no biggie.

He said it's full of fat and sugar but didn't mention that all food has protein (except celery?). For prenatal vitamins I used femibion on all of my 3 pregnancys. It has more ingredients as folio, especially the once after the 12 week mark. Usually for the clucose test, you'll get a prescription and buy a flavored drink in a pharmacy. The way you had to do it, is outdated... It used to be done like that, seems that some doctors refuse to go with the time 😬 Wish you all the best for your remaining weeks of pregnancy 🍀✊️

The vitamins that you can get at the pharmacy are just the standard ones. During my pregnancy, I talked to my gynaecologist and she prescribed magnesium, iron and omega in addition. Magnesium from the gynaecologist is usually also more highly dosed than what you get in the pharmacy. I think in Germany it is common to be in close contact with your doctor and talk about your needs or habits. I was also asked if I was a vegetarian and therefore needed more iron, etc. I was told that I needed more iron. I think it depends a bit on which doctor you have. :-)

It is better to consult with the doctor whether vitamins may be needed. The doctor examines regularly and thus determines whether nutrients are missing somewhere. Too much on one's own responsibility because one has read it somewhere is not good either. Don't stress and trust the doctor, then everything will be fine. But it was also important to me to go to a clinic to give birth!

This brought back some memories! I can only talk about my own experiences (4 full term pregnancies) with the last 18 years ago. Due to having diabetes in the family, I was screened for it, by my gynecologist, at every appointment (no need for fasting 🤷‍♀️). With every pregnancy, I had prescriptions for folic acid. Later in the pregnancies Magnesium was recommended. No other supplements, but advice for "take it easy" and "sun" lol.

About prenatal supplements: I'm now in my 23rd week of pregnancy and I've taken Folio 2 like 2 times during week 13. That's it. I didn't take them pre-pregnancy and don't do now either and still, according to the monthly visits at the gynecologist, my baby is developing perfectly well and in time, even without supplements. I'm going to get criticism for this remark but I think you are crazy to plan a 5 week journey in a camper van or, worse still, a tent with a newborn. The baby will get nothing from this trip and will also have no routine or peace and quiet which is, in my opinion , essential at this young age. I found the first few months being at home getting used to my baby and she getting used to our family and routines wonderful and for me it was essential to be able to have a nap when she slept. I couldn't imagine travelling every day at such a time. I also think it would be easier for Willa to adjust to being a big sister in her own home with her own routine and the security of her familiar Kita which gives her time away from the baby who needs your attention in the first few weeks. I know it's none of my business but as an experienced mum who also works in a Kita I felt someone had to say this. You will be surprised at the huge difference a second child brings to a family and not all children are the same, your experience might be completely different to that with Willa as a newborn and what if there are problems when you are far away in Norway for example. Sorry to say all this. I love your videos and I think you have done a great job with Willa she's an adorable child and I wish you all the luck with the rest of the pregnancy and birth and can't wait for you to show us your new daughter.

I agree that many pregnant women might need certain additional nutrients. But not all pregnant women are identical in their needs. Supplements with high dosages of all minerals and vitamins can lead to overdosing on some of the ingredients if not ALL of them are needed. Basically only vitamin C is non-toxic in any dosage, as it is easy to get rid of and it doesn't block other receptors. Any excess vitamin C is gotten rid of via urine. All other nutrients, especially folic acid, can have serious detrimental side effects in too high dosages. That's why most non-prescription supplements available in pharmacies in Germany are limited to only a handful of directly related nutrients, and in relatively low dosages. At least those you can get in the pharmacy. Unfortunately there are quite a few supplements you can get in your local grocery store/supermarket that throw a bunch of supplements at you without any reasonable explanation on dosages and regularity of application, nor duration of application. Which is something I find very concerning. But at least a pharmacist usually knows very well which supplements to advise on, contrary to those supermarket supplements. Therefore using a generalist approach to supplements can be more detrimental than beneficial. With sufficient knowledge, advice, and care handpicked supplements however will certainly be beneficial, but only dependant on the specific situation of each pregnant woman.

It's especially important to consult qualified professionals for any supplements. Personally, we don't use any supplements, with the exception to occasional Vitamin D for the darker winter months, because we know we get enough of the nutrients through our diets. That's right. The supplement industry is unfortunately another area that has been overtaken by companies who are looking to make a lot of money. Pair that with supplements not being regulated, and you never really know what they have in their product.

It is probably less components than what you have in USA because a regular Euro diet has more nutriments than a regular USA diet? Also the USA is to this day the only remaining country in the "western world" that does not have a policy federal wise on maternity leave benefits.Heck even Irak has one.

My glucose test in Germany (three times) was a flavored drink I picked up from the pharmacy. I could pick orange or black current. I brought it with me to the OB, they poured it in the glass and I drank it there. They took three finger prick blood samples. Before I drank, after one and 2 hours. As for my birth plan, we first discussed it around 32 weeks with my second pregnancy . Since it was a birth after a c-section I was asked, “do you have physiological issues and want another section? There are no indications for another c-section so unless your last birth traumatized you, you will be doing a VBAC.” He then gave me a slip of paper with his cell phone number and said call me 24 hours a day if you feel you need support/back-up during labor. The head OB at the hospital is my brother. I have pull there. 😂 I have regular German public insurance and had at least a quick US at almost every OB visit performed by my OB. As for walking out naked from the changing room, I was always asked to bring a towel to sit on which used around me as I walked the 10 steps to the exam table. I took Folio starting a year before I became pregnant. No one recommended it to me. I researched on my own. My last pregnancy was 16 years ago.

All dietary supplements are regulated by the federal ordinance on dietary supplements (Verordnung über Nahrungsergänzungsmittel). There is a list of approved ingredients that are allowed to be in supplements. If a manufacturer or importer wants to have ingredients in a supplement that are not on the list a special permit from the federal office for consumer protection and food safety (Bundesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit) needs to be obtained before a market launch of the supplement. State authorities of each federal state are in charge to check on a regular basis that all supplements sold in their federal state are in compliance with the federal ordinance or have a permit if necessary.

well, the pharmacy will give you the ones that they would recommend without a blood test. but the pharmasist as well as you ob-gyn should do a big blood test on your first appointment and then recommend extra on top. i had a very high iron deficiency and therefor was blood checked monthly for various nutrition. i even ask him to transfer me for that to my normal doc as they have a special nurse and i‘m absolutely scared of needles and she is a magician for drawing blood for me. so from my experience most woman get extra subliments but only with extra blood test and not just from the shelves on a wild guess. for me i had 3 different iron sources , magnesium, selenium, vitamin e and k i believe.

Love you guys and your channel.. but this made me angry! LADIES PLEASE DO THE GESTATIONAL DIABETES TEST! I have never had "sugar in water" in Germany... you get a glucose fluid drink and if you have problems with it, you can buy a flavoured sugar drink from the chemist to take with you to drink for the test (like in the USA). Also if you are registered with a gynaecologist and midwife, you are sent to a diabetes specialist for the test. What is described here is not typical and maybe because her health insurance is not a german one and she is doing everything as an "out patient" at a clinic. Also it is normal not to eat or drink before urine, blood, sugar tests and OPs because the doctors need your "resting" values BEFORE they give you tests/drugs etc. This is STANDARD everywhere..if they didn't do this.. they couldn't SEE your bodies response to the test because they wouldn't have a BASE LEVEL to go by! It is totally IRRESPONSIBLE not to do the diabetes test. I had gestational diabetes with both kids.. i was strict with my diet and kept sugar under control during my pregnancy so my kids had no physical damage. I luckily didn't need insulin. I have family in the UK ..she had pregnancy diabetes, didn't test, and her child has had disabilities since birth because his organs grew to big!..the damage to the foetus/your baby if you have pregnancy diabetes can be extensive and permanent causing many health issues and even after birth surgery for years... WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT THIS FOR THEIR CHILD? When you can avoid it with a 2hr test!.which is a few hours of discomfort for the safty of your baby! Ps they do the test at the doctors to make sure it is done 100% correctly because you have to stay still so that you do not burn the glucose through physical exercise to see how your body responds and processes the blood sugar! (Basic science and biology!) The neck fold down syndrome test is normal all over Europe and the UK. You get a mother passport from the 12 week which goes through to post birth care.

Don't panic - Choline as a supplement is not as necessary as you think it is.

Folio is just basic. Only those, that many women here are lacking for the very nature of Germany. And only those that might be a hindrance to getting pregnant, or for the first weeks of pregnancy. If you don't get these, the probability of a severe handicap is higher. E.g. that a cell does not split up in the correct way, which causes things like spina bifida or a short bowel ending nowhere or prune belly, or... I know, because me and a neighbour we had this problem for another reason, and hers has spina bifida and mine prune belly. When the baby gets bigger and needs really a lot, you might change to Femibion. This has all vitamines, and additional elements like iron. This will lower your feeling of being weak or unwell. With my second and third baby I started far earlier with Femibion, and it stopped nausea and cravings.

Hi, I´m pretty conservative with medicine, extra vitamins and so on. I mean the human body gave birth for thousands of years now, without doctor without extra vitamins. The body usually does all correctly. Additionally nowadays we have the most diverse food all over the whole world all over the whole year. A nowadays human usually gets all it needs. (Just imagine the food situation 100 years ago) Usually. Yes. So as long as the tests are all good there is no need to worry at all. Usually. So good thing is that nowadays we have all the test and and we have the medicine the ultrasonic and so on. One should be way more relaxed than 100 years ago. But sadly - internet and hearsay and advertisements cause more fear than necessary. A birth is the most natural thing for .. not only humans. I can only recommend to do all the tests - and as long as they are good: Listen to your body, do the things you like to do, eat the things you like to do and relax. Stress and fear is not good for you and for your baby.

Fortunately for us, insurance covered practically everything for prenatal care, delivery and any follow up visits, but we know for a lot of people, that's not always the case. It's also worth noting that Willa's birth was likely cheaper than others because there was no anesthesia, induction, C-section, intensive care for baby or momma, etc. We can imagine how much the total cost increases when you start factoring those additional services. That´s the same with free TV channels. In order to get at least the money spended on equipment and some compensation for the work, you need to bring in some ads and product placements.
