I was born in England and lived here - north and south - for over 40 years and I have never heard of friends or family charging to help someone. That seems quite bizarre to me.

Same here. If friends or family help it is for the sake of helping and not in expectation of reward.

Never have i heard of friends and family being expected to pay for help. I`ve never experienced it, or seen it or read about it or seen it on the tv. In sixty years...never...not once.

Generally - if I help someone out in the UK, I wouldn't charge - they'd "buy me a pint" or invite me around for a meal. The exception is that if they wanted me to do something like drive a long way, specifically for them, they'd offer "petrol money" - but this would only relate to a specific cost, solely to help them.

I agree, you are being scammed if your paying friends and family for help! Even if I helped a total stranger I still wouldn't expect any payment and don't know anyone else who would either.

If you were my friend I wouldn't charge you for a lift anywhere I might offer the person some money towards petrol

Paying a bit of keep teaches kids how life is. It teaches them responsibility and gets them used to paying their way. It's about growing up.

I'm British and never heard of paying someone who has done you a favour, you would offer some petrol money maybe. If someone in household is earning money its only fair that they contribute to bills etc.

It depends on families, but paying a nominal amounrt to parents is just part of their education and journey through life, it's not a greed or unkind thing, in fact it's educational

Yes, this is a northern lad. He was around 19 or 20 at the time so I understand that may be he wasn’t thinking or lacked experience, but it was such an awkward situation .

I agree with quite a few who have commented that you may ask for "petrol money" if it is a significant cost of time or money to you that would put you out. Normally someone asking the favour would mention it before you, family I would never ask for anything. The thing about kids I think parents try and teach children the value of money while they are young and it needs to be earned. Kids being kids they latch onto this and start to realise its a good extortion racket !

By the the way , before I get any stick I'm a northern lad , and I dont know any northern lad who would charge , if they offered to take you to the airport , whether a Manc, scouse, dee, dar, or geordie.

Most people in the UK are exactly like that , but if the person is not well known they may feel obligated too give them an appreciation for their time or trouble but normally .this is not regularly done. Some parents have to ask their children to contribute towards costs especially if they are earning money , otherwise the living will never get any easier. Petrol money is the normal way not charging a taxi cost that is simply wrong and rude. Children get a pocket money allowance normally weekly to give them a bit of choice and some money to spend, but, many will do choring to help contribute to family well being anyway, it is not a system of chore and get paid for it. The huge difference in living standards is why people are more private in their money availability. We now have a much closer system we all get abused by the few and that is the political system we are not allowed to and cannot change.

Hi Kat, I found this very interesting and similar to my experience - I would add that in general people in Bulgaria are much more likely insist on paying the bill for you, and not expect any money back whereas here everything is split in half/three/four etc depending on the number of people and I believe it is because people tend to have mortgages/high rent/things on finance so although the salaries are generally higher people’s disposable income isn’t (at least people my age) xx

My parents didn't believe in paying kids to do chores either (I'm British), nor did they believe in paying kids to get good exam results. A friend of mine made a fortune out doing well in her GCSEs! I think its a modern thing...i can't believe they were paying kids back in the day when money was scarce for a lot of people. If I had kids now I don't think I'd pay them either. Paying friends for help is certainly not normal behaviour in the UK.

Lmao...what friends have you found that you have to pay them as a taxi ....never heard of it in my life...let's just say this doesn't happen , there not friends and I'm sure you have nutters like this in Russia as well ...as for kids doing major jobs around the house that's how they get pocket money , how else do they learn independence 🤷....Russia seems to be an odd nation , but each culture has its ways, neither wrong nor right , but why on earth would anyone want to know how much you earn, seems like Russians aren't open but want something to gossip about , but as I said no right or wrong in cultures, just do what you like to do and always be kind 😉

Unfortunately we live in a capitalist society, but dont forget , you have billionaires in Russia, who've made all their wealth of of the backs of the Russian working class, we've had a few years to learn since the industrial revolution, that unless you are prepared to say my , knowledge, effort, time is worth x mount , you will be worked into your grave ,

Oh yes, I definitely agree about knowing your worth when it comes to your work place , but I think that when it comes to helping out friends and family it’s a different situation. May be it depends on what you’re helping out with. If you’re just there to help install a kitchen or to help out with a bit of painting it’s different to if you were designing a website or something. It’s a difficult one isn’t it.

This is the weirdest take on living in UK I have ever seen. I have never been asked for fuel money by friends or been asked to pay. I offer to pay is very different. She seems to say none of it is criticism it is clearly framed as criticism. Let’s criticise the fact that we know where the Russian billionaires get their money and she fails to mention its due to Russian mafia state.
