Yes, I forgot to comment on that, impressive, my Mom used to go at a horse like that, mount them with confidence like you mean it, good job Abby, my Mom would say "that's just how you do it. And if that horse bucks you off, you go right back on". She say... But I can't see Lady bucking you off. Lady is a Lady...as Jim says, not always ah ha

WOW, what a beautiful flower garden and vegetable garden. Your wife sure does have a green thumb. Thanks to you Jim for helping her by cultivating the garden. Mom and Dad would do that with the potatoes and when I got chickens we would let the chickens in the garden (with supervision) to grab bugs. Jim hasn't had time to put a wheel on that cultivator yet, just add it to the "to do" list.

👍👌🇨🇦❤, I was showing my dad your video and the potatoe bugs, he was laughing so hard, he said that his dad would make him and his brother's go oit into the patch each with a coffee tin partially filled with kerosene and have to pick the bugs by hand and 5hrough them in the tin, he said he didn't know which was a worse punishment, picking them , or the combination of the heat, humidity and the fumes off the kerosene, many thanks for the memories

Your garden looks really nice. Isn't it great also to have a daughter who can guide a horse so well through the rows? Brenda, it really pays to brush off the potato bugs. We grow a lot more potatoes of course since we sell to restaurants, but last year my wife and I went throw the rows assiduously every day for a while and were rewarded this year by no potato beetles at all. We took buckets with a bit of water in them, which drowned them. Lady is a very good horse and puts up with anything.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Brenda, we are having a bumper crop of onions, the potatoes which I started digging, are also good, but our beets didn't get the rain they needed in the crucial time, so they are not satisfactory. The peas were good, and we are starting harvesting green beans. Our tomatoes are coming on strong. Greens were adequate in spring. Now I am waiting for more rain. If it were up to me, it could rain every other day , now that our first cut of hay is in, which was extremely bountiful this year.

Another great video with Lady! Jim you should fasten a wheel on the from of that cultivator. It would make life really easier. :-) Abbey was lucky not to have fallen. Lucky that Lady is a gentle lady. :-)

If my Mom seen the things us boys did on the farm, she would of had a heart attack, we were crazy wild. Climb to the top peak of the barn, free hand for starters.. Lucky we all lived..

Plant your potatoes later, I plant last week in May and no potato bugs, they die off early if no potatoes around when they emerge from the winter. Still get a good crop of potatoes even planting that late.

Garden is looking good so are the flowers. Good job cultivating the garden only minimal damage. We had horses for riding my dad bought draft horses when we all left and he not longer farm the ground. I have always wondered what it was like to ride a big draft horse... I got my first pony when I was five. She was half Shetland and half Appaloosa. She not terribly attractive and was not well behaved but she was mine and I loved riding her until I got old enough that I was trusted to ride one of our thoroughbreds by myself. The difference was like going from a Volkswagen to a Mercedes....🤔🙂😁

These are really neat people. Can Abby come over and cultivate our yard? Your method is so much smarter than what I did by hand. Maybe Abby could train one our horses to do that.

I miss doing this with my little gal. Folks in our area favored Rastus plows, and plow ponies.

Those horses are so gentle, your girls are sure pretty and helpful.

Your garden is beautiful! The delphinium I remember from my mom's flowerbeds... They are gorgeous! Just a thought... but could you use diatomaceous earth on potato bugs? Another thought... my dad taught me that when growing onions for green onions... to plant the sets upside down... then when they start to grow they will grown down, looking for the sun, and then curve and grow up... Makes the white part longer... and also dad would buy extra sets so that when we pulled a green onion for the table... we stick another in the same spot after we worked the soil a bit... Just ramblin'...

You are a great gardener. I have always mixed up a soap spray for my veggies. I like to use a natural soap if I can. Never use a soap that has borax in it, and test it on a plant. Check it for the next few days. Some plants are more sensitive than others and you may have to adjust you spray.

Really enjoy watching them big horse's work. They are so beautiful. Great looking garden.

You guys have such a beautiful place. What beautiful horses too. It was hard to watch her yanking in the bit/horses mouth. Curious if you’ve had any experience going bitless? Would be nice to see how your horses would respond to cues, without a bit... thanks for another video!

I'm glad Abby didn't actually try to ride Lady standing on her back. The way I've seen it done is with a sort of carousel setup and the person riding would wear a harness as well as another person controlling the rope so as to keep the rider up and let the regain the footing or let them down to the ground for a remount.

Quicklime spread on your potato plants like a dust will sometimes make the potato bugs fall off. I've had mixed results. Paying young kids a penny a bug collected in a pail or glass jar is money well spent. First money I ever earned. But really, if you watch sales, BOGO, and such, it's almost better to buy than grow and a lot less work. and you will have better quality. I don't eat potatoes like we used to on the farm however. I make scalloped potatoes and boiled and baked potatoes and freeze a bunch ahead and then microwave. Depends on your family size and needs.

That’s how I earned my first money too. Nothing like homegrown potatoes- we had some little ones for dinner and they were delicious.

Great job Y'all. Your garden looks beautiful. The beautiful flowers should attract the pollinators. Jim sure has to be quick at making adjustments. Are there any plans to upgrade Lady with the John Deere Greenstar GPS system?!?! (Ha!Ha!) We need to see more of Abby and Trudy doing some trick riding on the horses.

Watching another one of your videos made me smile through all of it again! I wonder if I could train Chief to plow!? I could stand on his back and slide off his rear end!! I used to drive my horses from behind when I was just getting them started... Wonder if he'd remember...?!?! Plus I would have teach him to accept the collar being placed over his head and all the other gear!! He's about to turn 19 in June! He was born on my place out of Cinco she just turned 27! He's a big black and white paint and he is gorgeous! Have a great day... I'm working on my garden today! It's 5/24/21! Glad y'all made it through 2020 too! What a year to remember...or one to try and forget?!

Good day Watching this were corn was tramp on takes back when my dad done it in 60's , boy mom was really worked up. I remember my dad saying a good horse can walk 4 mile/hr. Boy you guys really went thur there. Thanks . What about itchy burning legs, from Lady's sweat.

Larry this Farmer’s wife is the best cook. There’s too many favorites to just name one.

Think my late day used spray potatoes with soapy water to keep the bugs of may be worth a try for you

My first garden was as a kid using a neighbor hand plow..

Using my Troybilt "Horse" rototiller to weed is almost as much work as you using your horse! I sometimes make a mistake too.

I would rig up a wheel from a push lawn mower on front of the cultivator. I think it would work out ok.

Hi folks, Just been watching use knocking on grubs onto bin lid. Do uses not feed grubs to hens , or wild birds. In UK we have blackbirds and thrushes that help same as Robins and starlings

Those horses are so trusting of you and you all are so trusting of them then I assume they have their stables connected to your house 🏠 and join you all for the main meal in the evenings. Do they ever play up?

No, the stable is not connected to the house but we certainly do have to trust each other a lot and the horses are a big part of our lives here on the farm. They don’t eat with us but Jim is very particular about making sure they are fed well and on time (he lives his horses!)

Working Horses With Jim . I was joking regards sleeping and eating with you all. I remember my grandfather doing the same also here in Western Australia. I remember the last remaining horse well. His name was Saddleback. Certainly a different sort of name for a horse. BTW I am 66 and I remember Saddleback from the very early 1960,s to give you an idea of time slot.

send soil samples to Logan Labs (or other labs which do what is called the Albrecht system of soil mineral balancing) for around $25 - they will give you a recommendation on how to amend the soil of your garden, and your plants would not be bothered by pests, particularly such low-level potato bugs or aphids. the amendments don't cost much at all and will possibly be readily available around your area. it bothers that some farmers' garden has pests and disease even if you only once in a while use insecticides. healthy plants are not visited by these plagues...blessings

thewest newyorker 36 inch is a good row spacing for a horse. Mine are a little bit less but I wish that they were 36 inches
