Culp’s Hill- Beyond The Works: Reflecting on Sacrifice | Battle of Gettysburg
Culp’s Hill is the only place on the Gettysburg battlefield that saw fighting on all three days of the battle. We know now that this position essentially became a natural fortress for the Union forces. But imagine being told to advance beyond the works and take up position in front of the fortifications that provided so much safety. That’s exactly what the men of the 66th Ohio were told to do. In this episode we will learn about their actions on Culp’s Hill on July 3rd, 1863.

Thank you for sharing the story of the 66th Ohio. I love the fact that you tell these stories. Culps Hill was so important to the Battle of Gettysburg but so little is ever told about it. Great video. 👍🙂

Happy to hear you enjoy this one. Culp’s Hill is such a neat yet, Overlooked area. As always thanks for watching.
Another awesome video James. You have brought honor to the men that fought and gave their all on that hill from both sides. I have an ancestor that fought and died in the fight for Culps Hill. He was in the 147th Pa company f , his name was Jon Bainbridge , a blacksmith from Harrisburg, he was 19 years of age when he fell at Gettysburg. He's buried at the Soldiers National Cemetery. Thank you for the great work you do. Bringing to life the storys, in the reflection and rememberance of the bravery and sacrifice of the ones who were there.

Completely by accident 😂. Thanks for watching JD!
I was on this exact ground yesterday. This video is timely as I found myself drawn to the monuments to the 66th. Incredibly hallowed soil.

I really enjoyed this area. I went right at sunrise and it was absolutely beautiful there. Enjoyed learning about the 66th as well. Thanks for watching.
My GGF was wounded at Culps Hill. He was with the 33rd VA. Was captured in the retreat and ended up a POW at Pea Patch Island.

Thanks for sharing your family’s history.
I saw the Ohio monument a couple of years ago but I didn’t understand why it was down that path from the observation tower. This video explains it perfectly. Thanks for the excellent maps and narrative.

George Sears Greene is buried 15 min from my house in Warwick, RI. It’s on some random hill and you’d NEVER find it unless you did your research

This is one of my favorite video presentations of yours thus far. You really captured the terrain and made it easy to understand. I appreciate how you continually orient us to the surroundings. First rate, nice job, bravo!

Great video. Once again you captured that terrain. Being there in person makes it hard to imagine having to charge up that hill. Very nice tribute to Major Palmer as well . 🇺🇸

Glad we got to see it together!
It was also humid and in the 90° and the troops showed up already exhausted.

Absolutely. These guys were tough. A different breed.
Another great job, we must have overlooked the marker to Maj Palmer during our last visit there as i don't recall seeing it. next trip we'll have to make a note to pay our respects. walking that area late in the season really does give you a better feel for what it was like with the terrain for sure.

Good clip. Does help a great deal to see the terrain, slope minus vegetation, and allows one to understand the difficulty for both armies on the piece of ground. Your narration was clear and concise, Mr. Cosgrove. Military training possibly contributed? Noted your name tape on your ruck.

I appreciate you watching! Seeing the terrain is always eye opening for me. Yes, I served 6 years in the army reserve as a medic. I’ve loved military history since I was a kid.
Good job

GG Grandfather in Co. I, 66TH OVI...was wounded in the eyes that morning and discharges on July 29. As coincidence would have it, another GGG was in the 25th VA coming up and yet another a few yards down in Co. C, 29TH OVI... Fate....

I appreciate you sharing that information. I really enjoyed my visit there. Gettysburg is a powerful place.
God bless General Lee and Stonewall Jackson!
Both sides targeted anyone who appeared to be commanding or giving orders. Palmer must have been quickly spotted by the rebel riflemen. p.s. ....would have begun........* ......would have run.......*
