Flunked at Machinist Mate A school and got reclassed as a CS. Motivated me a lot and ended up number 1 in my class. Spent 3 years in a shitty squadron and got orders at 7th fleet where I ended up cooking for the Vice Admiral in Japan on board USS Blue Ridge. Best ship in the whole Navy. Got reccomendations at the Pentagon and White House but ended up as a civilian. I dont like cooking but being a CS has taught me a lot. Now a civilian working as a registered nurse with the help of the GI bill. Loved my navy journey!!

I scored an 82 on my asvab and I switched my job from AIRC to CS because I’m passionate about the culinary arts and I plan on going to school for it. Even if I can’t get a day off, gotta do what you gotta do to get closer to your goal.

If you are passionate about cooking then the CS rate might not be so bad for you. When you get to your first ship try to work in the ward room cooking for officers thats where you can show off your talents.

The Official Dave Harris i JUST graduated from CS A school in Fort Lee, I’m on leave right now and I’m going to fly to Yokosuka, Japan next week on the 28th. Working in the galley in A school was kinda ass so if only 200 portions had me stressed, I can’t imagine 1500. I’m actually a little nervous now lmao

Petty Officer Harris, I'd like to commend you on informing current and future sailors on your opinions of the CS rating. I recently retired as A Senior Chief Culinary Specialist and I can honestly say that becoming a cook was the best decision I ever made in my military career. When I entered the Navy in the early 90's, I came in as an Electrician. I hated being an ET so I cross rated to become a MS which is now called CS. Yes the hours are long Shipmate but hard work builds character and you will be rewarded. The advice that I'd like to give you is to keep working hard and dont look at those things you deem as NEGATIVE to be bad. While working those long hours try to learn something new every day. Ask your Chief and Department head for more collateral duties and responsibilities. Dont limit yourself to just CS duties. Ask to do qualify other jobs throughout the ship, DONT LIMIT YOURSELF!!! Encourage the junior sailors that work for you. You must lead by example, if junior sailors see you talking in a NEGATIVE manner about the Navy and the CS rating they will soon do the same and their motivation to succeed will soon be diminished. Once again thanks for your hard work and dedication.Thank you for your service Shipmate.

Days are long but when I was in (1972) you worked port and starboard so every other day you were off. When the rest of the crew was turning to, I was going on liberty. Also I never waited in a pay line or shot lines. No doubt pay lines have gone away, but they used to pay you in cash. Everyone was your friend as a cook. I liked the rate and then spent a career as a chef in restaurants.

euphoryuh I feel you. Check out my other videos about the CS rate. We work long hours and you are on your feet all day cooking or cleaning, it’s hard to to get a full lunch break because your so busy cooking. The plus side you can cook yourself what you want sometimes, you don’t have to wait in line to eat, you get days off during the middle of the week, you don’t stand duty, it’s easy to make rank, you can get stationed more places than any other rate.

The Official Dave Harris hmm yea tbh, a lot of other Corpsmen would think I’m crazy for wanting to leave the corpsmen lifestyle. It would really be a downgrade going to CS. We live pretty comfortably but I feel like when we do work hard it doesn’t pay off due to our low advancement rate. Even getting an EP isn’t a guarantee. I just wanna work a job where my hard work actually gets me somewhere and I’m not breaking my back for nothing. Every CS I seen looks dead inside but that 5 to 2 thing is pretty nice, especially for the CS’s on shore duty in Japan where I just came from.

I had that area organized and prestaged for a couple days at a time for the breakouts. I nearly went MS just because the quality of shipmates I got to work with while cranking. I would get out and move back with your parents and get a business going. Don't think you deserve a home with the VA Home loan right off of the bat. I would avoid debt getting out cause that forces you to get a traditional job then you can't focus on business as much.

@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Yeah man I was in for 7 years. My opinion is don't waste time on GI Bill, debt, or a job. Just 100% business if you can. The BAH from the GI Bill is nothing compared to a successful business. BAH is a waste of time to get a degree to become a slave to a job when you get out. If I could go back, I would be a loser living with my mom or someone I knew just building and growing with no distractions. A job, owning a house and the Gi Bill BAH ain't shit. What's going to happen is other sailors are going to get out, get families/debt and get stuck and becomes slaves real quick going to school for some 100k job when most of it is taxed. They aren't even thinking straight. Get a snow cone stand going or something more detailed. Something without a business loan at first.

@@theofficialdaveharris8794 I was an IT. Well if you work with food, maybe a meal-prep business with a good woocommerce wordpress ordering system. You can start that from your home with door dash/uber eats then scale that to a commercial shop. Eventually, duplicate/franchise then buy some commercial land so you don't have to pay rent anymore. All kinds of ways you can scale and grow. Rent out one of the slots in the commercial building that you buy to pay the loan payment.
